Rampage 38 Express: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Rampage 38 Express, a classic among offshore fishing vessels, retains its iconic lines in the 2004 model while incorporating thoughtful updates to enhance comfort and functionality. Designed with serious sport fishing in mind, the 38 Express balances rugged fishability with refined interior and helm modifications based on extensive customer feedback and research.
Exterior Design and Bridge
The 38 Express features a spacious and well-organized helm area that accommodates four people facing forward, providing comfort and stability even in rough seas. The helm dashboard allows for flush-mounted electronics and tilts backward to facilitate easy installation and maintenance. The cockpit is designed with the dedicated fisherman in mind, offering an unobstructed, expansive working space capable of handling multiple fish simultaneously. Integrated into the transom is a 55-gallon livewell for ample bait storage, complemented by two large flush-mounted fish boxes in the sole, each equipped with macerator pumps for efficient cleaning. Forward in the cockpit, a sink with tackle storage adds convenience. Engine access is simplified by a switch-operated lifting cockpit sole, revealing a meticulously arranged engine room housing twin 480 horsepower Cummins 480 C engines. The aluminum tower, constructed to minimize weight and roll, includes a secondary control station elevated for superior visibility when spotting fish schools. A wide walkway provides easy access to the bow, which, like the cockpit, offers generous working space.
Interior Living Spaces
The 2004 redesign extends below deck where the salon has been updated to enhance comfort and usability. The dining area features wraparound booth seating oriented toward an entertainment center, creating a cozy retreat. The former berth area accommodates four overnight guests comfortably, with privacy curtains and individual reading lights. The vessel also includes a stand-up shower enclosed by a wraparound plexiglass door, adding to the onboard amenities.
Power and Performance
Measuring 39 feet 6 inches in length with a beam of 13 feet 9 inches and a draft of 42 inches, the 38 Express exhibits excellent handling characteristics. The hull features a 19-degree dead rise at the transom, contributing to its agility and smooth ride. During testing, the boat demonstrated nimble maneuverability through swells and tight turns. Close-quarter control is enhanced by a 'slow boat mode' that governs RPM for precise, slow-speed operation without abrupt movements. The electronic ZF controls, while initially exhibiting slight hesitation, operate smoothly once accustomed. Performance testing revealed a top speed of 37.7 miles per hour at 2680 RPM and an optimal cruising speed of 20.7 miles per hour at 1750 RPM. With a fuel capacity of 400 gallons, the 38 Express offers an estimated range of 466 miles, depending on conditions.
Conclusion
The Rampage 38 Express is a robust offshore fishing vessel that combines classic styling with modern enhancements to meet the demands of serious anglers. Its thoughtful design, from the spacious helm and functional cockpit to the comfortable interior and reliable powertrain, ensures confident and stylish passage to fishing grounds. The 2004 updates successfully blend fishability with creature comforts, making the 38 Express a versatile and capable sport fishing platform.
