Pro-Line Express: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The ProLine 35 Express is a robust offshore fishing vessel designed to meet the needs of avid fishing families and professional sportsmen alike. Combining serious offshore capabilities with comfortable amenities, this model offers a wave-calming ride and the durability required for challenging sea conditions. ProLine continues its Express series tradition by delivering a boat that balances performance and functionality for big water adventures.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

Constructed using advanced 3610 knitted fiberglass for enhanced durability and finished with a 3-ounce skin coat for a glass-like surface, the ProLine 35 Express boasts a hull and deck bonded with aerospace-grade adhesives similar to those used on the Space Shuttle. The vessel features safe, high stainless steel railings, a bow pulpit with an anchor roller, and a standard windlass equipped with rope and chain. Dual windshield wipers and a hardtop outfitted with lighting, hatches, four rod holders, and spreader lights are standard. The aft cockpit includes a three-step boarding ladder, a starboard walkthrough with a pull-out shower, and a port-side bait sink accompanied by three rod holders on the stern. Additional fishing amenities include gunnel-mounted rod holders, autogunnel racks, and tow rails. The aft-facing port bench folds down to reveal a tackle center with drawers, hook organizers, cutting boards, and tackle storage, while a bait station with a light-colored interior, bait well, and rinse sink is located behind the helm seat.

Interior Living Spaces

Inside, the ProLine 35 Express offers a cabin environment comparable to many cruisers. Down the flying steps to port is a full stand-up wet head featuring a vacuum flush toilet, pull-out shower, and ventilation portal. The port side houses a fully equipped galley complete with a microwave, sink, cooktop, and refrigerator. Forward in the V-berth, two can sleep comfortably, with entertainment provided by a flat panel TV and DVD player discreetly stored in the berth peak. On the starboard side, a comfortable settee is accompanied by a stereo system and the power distribution panel, providing a functional and inviting living space.

Helm and Navigation

The helm station is designed to offer both professional and recreational fishermen a position of control and comfort. It features ample space for electronics, including digital engine gauges such as those from Honda, and outlets for portable devices. Adjacent companion navigation seating includes a ventilated storage area beneath the bench and additional storage on the counter for items like portable GPS units and binoculars, facilitating organized and efficient operation.

Power and Performance

Powered by triple Honda 225 horsepower 4-stroke outboard engines, the ProLine 35 Express delivers impressive performance and reliability. The Honda BF225 engines are known for their high efficiency and durability, sharing technology with Honda's automotive models such as the Odyssey and Pilot. These engines feature a two-stage air induction system that optimizes airflow across a range of speeds and a belt-driven 60-amp alternator that provides ample electrical charging capacity. On test, the boat accelerated from a standstill to planing in 6.8 seconds, reached 30 miles per hour in 13.8 seconds, and cruised economically at 36 miles per hour with the engines turning 4,500 RPM. The top speed was recorded at 49 miles per hour. The vessel measures 35 feet 6 inches overall with a beam of 12 feet 6 inches, weighs 11,200 pounds dry, and holds 320 gallons of fuel, all contributing to its wave-slicing smooth ride and offshore capability.

Conclusion

The ProLine 35 Express stands out as a serious offshore fishing platform that combines rugged construction, thoughtful fishing amenities, and comfortable accommodations. Its triple 225 horsepower Honda outboards provide strong performance, while the well-appointed interior and functional deck layout support both fishing and cruising activities. This model is well-suited for those seeking a durable and capable boat for offshore excursions with family or professional use.
