Premier 310 Boundary Waters: BoatTEST Review
Overview
In 1999, Premier Pontoons identified a growing need for enhanced performance in pontoon boats, particularly as boat sizes and engine power increased. Collaborating with marine design engineer Fred Cody, known for his work on high-performance watercraft, they developed the patented PTX performance package. This innovation introduced a 36-inch patented PTX hull that replaced the traditional center tube, revolutionizing pontoon boat handling, stability, and speed.
PTX Hull Design and Engineering
Fred Cody, with extensive experience dating back to 1959 and involvement with Premier Marine since 1990, designed the PTX hull to improve upon the standard round center tube. The hull features a V-shaped front, a 12-inch wide flat planing surface on the bottom, and lifting strakes positioned on the inside of both outboard tubes. This configuration reduces drag by allowing the boat to ride on the flat surface when on plane, while the lifting strakes facilitate efficient lift and maneuverability. Notably, placing lifting strakes on the inside of the outboard tubes enhances turning performance by enabling the boat to bank smoothly into turns, unlike competitor designs that place strakes outside and experience resistance during turns.
Performance and Handling Comparison
The PTX-equipped pontoon boat demonstrates superior performance compared to traditional triple tube pontoons. Both the PTX and competitor boats tested were 25 feet long with 102-inch beams and powered by standard V8 stern drive engines. The PTX hull pushes less water, allowing it to plane quickly and achieve higher speeds, even when fully loaded. Its handling is characterized by dynamic rolling and banking into turns, delivering a smooth, V-hull-like experience with the tightest turn radius in commercial pontoon boats. In contrast, competitor boats with conventional triple tubes and external lifting strakes exhibit less responsive handling, wider turn radii, and greater water resistance.
Stability and Rough Water Performance
Beyond speed and maneuverability, the PTX hull enhances stability both at rest and underway. The 36-inch wide center tube stabilizes the boat further, accommodating up to 14 passengers or 2,600 pounds comfortably. The V-up front design effectively cuts through waves, and the spacing between pontoons allows waves to dissipate, resulting in a smooth ride even in choppy conditions with 1 to 2-foot waves. This design ensures that the boat maintains excellent control and comfort in less favorable boating environments.
Additional Features and Practical Considerations
The PTX performance package includes several integrated features that contribute to its functionality. A built-in 53-gallon fuel tank is centrally located within the tube to maintain a low center of gravity and balanced weight distribution. Additionally, a 7-foot ski storage locker with 15 cubic feet of capacity is incorporated into the tube, providing convenient storage for water sports equipment. All outboard models come equipped with a ski tow bar. The optional command view raised helm enhances visibility, and standard hydraulic steering offers precise control at both low and high speeds.
Conclusion
The Premier PTX performance package represents a significant advancement in pontoon boat design, combining innovative hull engineering with practical features to deliver unmatched speed, handling, and stability. Its ability to bank smoothly into turns, plane quickly, and provide a comfortable ride in rough water distinguishes it from traditional pontoon boats. The PTX hull design has remained consistent since its initial testing, underscoring the effectiveness of its engineering. Prospective buyers are encouraged to experience the PTX firsthand through test drives available at Premier dealers.
