About Julia Max
Julia Max is a truly unique find for owners seeking a well-founded, extraordinarily well-maintained, sea-kindly yacht suited to ocean and coastal voyaging as well as local cruising and day sailing. Her ketch rig offers a versatile range of sail combinations to manage and balance her on any point of sail, while her center cockpit and dodger provide ample protection from the conditions one might expect on a blue-water passage or points north in Alaska.
Designed by Doug Peterson and built by Peter Hoyt at the Shin Fa Boatyard in Taiwan, Julia Max has been in the care of her current owners for 20 years. In that time, they've sailed her the length of the Atlantic Seaboard and into the Caribbean, transited the Panama Canal, crossed the Pacific to New Zealand, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Tonga, and Fiji, and then covered the length of the Pacific Coast of North America - including extended time in Alaska.
She's been continuously upgraded by her current owners, with most major work carried out by Schooner Creek in Portland: both mizzen and main masts repainted, standing rigging replaced, chainplates pulled, inspected, and reinstalled (2020), new North Dacron cruising main and genoa (2019), and a major engine maintenance (2025). Beyond the upgrades and replacements, what stands out most is the clear, functional logic of her deck and sail-handling layout - the product of years of extended offshore miles, evident the moment you step aboard. Things are simply where they need to be for shorthanded voyaging in any weather. There is not a better example of a Passport/Hoyt 45 on the market today, nor is there likely to be. Choose a destination and go - she's ready for her next stewards to continue her journey.
From the owners:
"Our retired life has been filled with sailing adventures in exotic places. Julia Max has been a wonderful sailboat for the two of us."
Interior Accommodations
Julia Max's teak-and-holly cabin sole is both durable and beautiful. Forward is a large stateroom with a spacious V-berth fitted with memory foam cushions, hanging lockers immediately to port and starboard, and shelving with a cubby space above and outboard. Under the V-berth is generous storage with stacked shelving, ideal for longer-term stowage of items that need periodic replenishing during a voyage.
Aft of the starboard hanging locker is a large outboard-facing desk and work area, with flat storage beneath the desktop and ample, easily accessed shelves and drawers both outboard and below. Opposite, to port, is a single head with a stone vanity, hot and cold pressure water, a shower head, a Jabsco manual pump with a 14-gallon holding tank, and a stand-alone shower stall.
Aft of the keel-stepped mast, the main saloon is bright and well ventilated: to port, an L-shaped settee and dining table seating four, and to starboard, a bench settee. Shelves and storage lockers outboard of both settees offer excellent, easily accessible storage, and either settee could serve as an excellent full-length sea berth with lee cloths added by a new owner.
Aft of the dining area, immediately to port of the companionway steps, is the U-shaped galley, featuring a counter-accessed Frigoboat condenser-driven refrigerator-freezer, a Force 10 three-burner gimbaled propane stove with oven, and a forward-facing double stainless-steel sink with hot and cold pressure water. The stone counter surfaces are durable and easy to maintain, rimmed with 2-inch teak fiddles that keep galley items within reach and off the floor.
To starboard, opposite the galley, is a traditional, generously sized chart table and navigation/communication station equipped with both VHF and SSB radios. Electrical panels are located both at the nav station and immediately behind the companionway steps.
Continuing aft from the nav station, a full-standing-height passageway leads to the owner's stateroom and its large memory-foam centerline berth. Outboard of the passageway is a bank of drawers and hanging lockers offering generous room for clothing and dry goods.
Directly below the cockpit is the engine room, providing excellent access to Julia Max's fuel manifold, 4JH4-TE Yanmar powerplant, Hurth direct-drive transmission, dual Racor fuel filters, and stuffing box. Please note the condition of the engine in the photos - it's exceptional. Julia Max was repowered in 2008, has since logged 7,500 hours, and was overhauled in October 2025. Her battery bank is located behind the companionway steps.
To port of the engine compartment, accessed through a forward door in the owner's head, is a full-standing-height "garage" with additional access to the engine room, as well as through the port-side cockpit lazarette hatch. Outboard are tool and spare-parts storage drawers for self-sufficient offshore voyaging, preserving - rather than compromising - valuable provisioning space elsewhere on the boat.
The owner's stateroom is built for both rest and traditional weather-watching: a chronometer, barometer, thermometer, and ceiling-mounted compass, all viewable from the berth, are beautifully analog and highly useful underway and at anchor. Access to the hydronic cabin heater and other mechanical gear is found in an insulated area beneath the master stateroom berth. The owner's head is equipped with a Jabsco manual head with a 19-gallon holding tank, a sink with a stone countertop, hot and cold pressure water, and an extendable shower head.
For the well-founded offshore yacht, ease of movement through the vessel in a seaway, usable storage volume, and mechanical accessibility are paramount. Julia Max has these in abundance.

Deck and Hull
Julia Max has a solid, hand-laid fiberglass hull with an extended keel, encapsulated lead ballast, and a skeg-hung rudder with a prop cutout (new bottom paint, 2025) - a configuration that delivers excellent stability and tracking while protecting both rudder and prop. Her chainplates were pulled, inspected, and re-bedded in 2020 at the same time her standing rigging was replaced.
Moving along the deck in a seaway, footing is sure thanks to her non-skid surfaces, and a six-inch bulwark - capped with varnished teak toe rails and fitted with 32-inch double lifelines - keeps feet, gear, and crew aboard. Stanchions are through-bolted to the bulwarks rather than the deck, a detail that both eliminates a common source of water intrusion into the deck substrate and creates a far stronger structural connection to the hull. A varnished teak rub rail protects the hull sides. Her center cockpit is deep, protected, and thoughtfully laid out, shielded by a new dodger that includes a forward glass port with a windshield wiper to ensure visibility in poor weather. Interior electric fans, six dorade boxes with cowl vents, ten bronze opening ports, a cabin-top butterfly hatch, and two opening deck hatches ensure excellent light and ventilation throughout.
Her decks are exceptionally clean and well kept. Most notably, the original screwed teak planking was removed when she was purchased in 2006 and the decks were re-glassed; the cabin top and cockpit have since been re-decked in stages over the past ten years, this time with glued rather than screwed teak. From the spinnaker-handling basket just forward of the mainmast to her sheet leads, hardware choices, and anchoring gear, Julia Max's deck layout reflects decisions shaped by real use and hard-won experience.
