1988 Passport 41 AREION Hull #2 - A Classic Bluewater Cruiser with Exceptional Teak Joinery

The Passport 41 AREION (Formerly MAGIC MOMENTS) is a beautifully appointed offshore cruising yacht designed by Robert Perry and built by Passport Yachts as an update to the highly regarded Passport 40. With her taller rig, expanded sail plan, molded-in swim platform, larger companionway, and reduced exterior teak, the Passport 41 combines classic bluewater capability with thoughtful cruising improvements.

AREION is especially appealing to offshore sailors looking for a proven cruising design with a substantial equipment inventory and a warm, exceptionally well-finished interior. She features a cutter rig, solid teak interior staving, MaxProp, watermaker, SSB, dinghy, and outboard. Importantly, she has no teak decks, reducing exterior maintenance while preserving the classic Passport character.

The boat has seen limited use in recent years and has been out of regular cruising service for several years. As a result, some onboard systems and equipment have not been recently exercised and should be inspected, tested, and recommissioned as appropriate by the new owner. This is reflected in the boat's presentation and provides an opportunity for her next owner to bring a well-equipped Passport 41 back into active cruising service.

INTERIOR & ACCOMMODATIONS

The interior is one of AREION's standout features. Solid teak staving-minimal teak-veneered plywood-is used throughout, complemented by exquisite joinery and a solid teak-and-holly cabin sole.

The forward owner's cabin features a double berth, extensive locker and shelf storage, bookshelves, and generous storage beneath the berth. Ventilation and natural light are provided by opening ports and overhead hatches, supplemented by cabin and reading lights.

Forward to port is the spacious head with a vanity countertop, lockers, medicine/toiletry cabinet, and a separate walk-in stall shower.

The main saloon features a U-shaped settee to port with a convertible dining/cocktail table. The table and settee can convert to a double berth. To starboard, the straight settee pulls out to accommodate a 7' crew member. Storage is abundant throughout, including behind seatbacks, in side cabinets, bookshelves, and beneath the settees.

The forward-facing navigation station is located aft to starboard and includes a chart table and storage.

The U-shaped galley is opposite to port and is particularly well suited to extended cruising, with expansive countertops and extensive storage.

Aft to starboard is the guest stateroom with a double berth, large locker, hanging wet locker, shelf storage, bookshelf, overhead lighting, reading lights, and fan.

The galley is equipped for serious cruising and includes:

DECK & COCKPIT

AREION has a practical cruising deck layout with no teak decks and no teak eyebrow. The aft transom incorporates a molded-in swim platform and folding ladder.

Anchoring equipment includes an electric windlass, double bow roller, 60-lb Manson Supreme anchor with 300' of 5/16" chain and 300' of 3/4" nylon rode, plus multiple Fortress anchors and rodes for additional anchoring options. A saltwater anchor washdown and stern anchor rode locker add further cruising convenience.

The cockpit features a 48" helmsman wheel with elk-hide cover, raised helm seat, cockpit cushions, teak cockpit table, hot-and-cold cockpit shower, full bimini and dodger with connector, and matching Sunbrella winch and mainsail covers.

The boat also includes an Avon 12' roll-up dinghy with oars and anchor and an 8 HP Yamaha outboard.

NAVIGATION & COMMUNICATIONS

The navigation and communications package includes:

The navigation, communication, and electronic systems have not been in regular service in recent years and should be tested and evaluated as part of the recommissioning process.

MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL

Power is provided by a freshwater-cooled Perkins 4-108 diesel, rated at 50 HP, with approximately 8,382 hours. The engine is centrally located to concentrate weight and provide a more horizontal shaft alignment, while its position beneath the main saloon provides exceptional engine access.

The mechanical package includes a Hurth 1.5:1 transmission, 1¼" Aquamet stainless shaft, Racor 500 FG fuel filter, 3-blade MaxProp, Shark shaft-line cutter, Edson cable steering, and automatic 3,700 GPH electric bilge pump.

Electrical equipment includes 30-amp shore power, Newmar electrical distribution panel, Xantrex Freedom 2500-watt inverter/automatic 3-stage battery charger, Newmar 45-amp battery charger, Balmar 100-amp engine alternator, and a substantial battery bank.

The vessel has been out of regular cruising service for several years, so mechanical and electrical systems should be inspected and operated carefully as part of the new-owner recommissioning process. The equipment inventory is extensive and provides an excellent foundation for returning the boat to active cruising.

HULL & CONSTRUCTION

AREION has a white solid-fiberglass hull with Airex insulation and a fiberglass deck with PVC foam core. Ballast is encapsulated lead. Bronze seacocks are used throughout, and the hull-to-deck joint is inward-flanged, glued and bolted with stainless fasteners.

The bottom was peeled and received a vinyl-ester barrier coat in 2006 by Osprey Marine.

SAILS & RIGGING

The Passport 41's cutter rig and taller mast provide an expanded sail plan while retaining the boat's offshore-cruising character.

Her rig includes a painted aluminum keel-stepped mast with double spreaders, stainless standing rigging with Sta-Lok and Norseman fittings, Harken roller furling, removable inner stay, Hall boom vang, Navtec hydraulic backstay adjuster, mainsail traveler forward of the dodger, and a mast-mounted spinnaker pole.

Sail inventory includes two mainsails, two 130% genoas, 100% jib/staysail, storm jib, and cruising spinnaker with sock.

Winch equipment includes Barient self-tailing primary winches, Barient two-speed self-tailing halyard/utility winches, additional utility winches, and multiple line stoppers leading to the cockpit.

Given the boat's period of limited use, the rig, sails, furling gear, winches, and associated equipment should be inspected and exercised as part of recommissioning before extended offshore use.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Safety equipment includes a 6-person SWITLIK liferaft in a hard-shell mount beneath the boom, lifesling, man-overboard pole, tethers, jacklines, personal strobes, abandon-ship bag, air horn and manual blow horn, bell, life jackets, flares, and a sea drogue.

Safety equipment should be inspected for current service dates and condition prior to use.
