Outer Reef 70: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Outer Reef 700 is a long-range cruiser that exemplifies over two decades of Outer Reef's expertise and commitment to quality. Designed for extended voyages, this vessel combines luxury living with practical features, ensuring comfort and functionality for those spending significant time aboard.

Exterior Design and Deck Areas

Boarding the Outer Reef 700 is facilitated via a teak-decked swim platform that spans the full 18-foot 8-inch beam and extends 4 feet 10 inches in length, an upgrade from the standard platform. Twin stairs on either side lead up to the aft deck, which features a watertight door centrally located on the transom, providing access to a versatile cabin suitable as a fourth stateroom or elegant crew quarters. Stainless steel rails on the platform are removable and configurable to aid boarding, with additional mounting sockets for storage. A discreet freshwater shower is housed in a locker along the port stair sidewall. The boat deck offers two chaise lounges beneath a removable awning supported by poles, complemented by a custom Vitrazo bar with three stools and storage. The starboard side includes a covered sink and propane grill, with the propane bottle closet draining overboard and a freshwater washdown nearby. Access to the flybridge entertainment area is gained through a wing door after ascending a couple of steps. The flybridge features L-shaped settees with adjustable Vitrazo pedestal tables on both sides, recessed lighting, stereo speakers, and 6 feet 8 inches of headroom under a hardtop. Deck drains are plumbed directly to the waterline to prevent streaking on the topsides. The helm console includes a sliding hatch providing interior stair access to the main deck. The aft deck itself is appointed with a rectangular teak table featuring a compass rose inlay, a cushioned bench seat, and a wet bar with sink, ice maker, and refrigerator/freezer. Doors separate the aft deck from side decks to mitigate wind, and teak decking continues down twin stairs to the swim platform. Massive stainless steel posts support the hardtop, designed to bear the load of a 1,700-pound hydraulic davit for tender launching. Side doors in the gunnels facilitate boarding from high piers, underscoring the vessel's thoughtful design.

Interior Living Spaces

The Outer Reef 700's interior is characterized by an open-concept layout that integrates the pilot house, galley, and salon without bulkheads, creating a spacious and inviting environment ideal for socializing. Large glass windows and a 6-foot 6-inch overhead clearance enhance the feeling of openness, complemented by a retractable television that maintains clean lines when not in use. The salon features elegant teak and wenge decking with burled accents, a beamed ceiling, and comfortable furnishings including a rounded-arm settee, leather armchairs, and an adjustable high-low coffee table. Attention to detail is evident in labeled switches, a pivoting 48-inch TV, and strategically placed Bose surround sound speakers. Tinted windows incorporate an internal reflective film to reduce heat. The American-style galley is separated visually from the salon by decorative cabinets and a slight elevation, featuring stylestone countertops, teak cabinetry, and a small island for additional workspace and storage. Appliances are primarily GE brand, chosen for their global serviceability, and include a Monogram Advantium microwave convection oven, four-burner induction cooktop, full-size oven, stainless steel undermount sink with an opening window, and a counter-depth French door refrigerator with a wine fridge drawer. Adjacent to the galley is a casual dining area with an L-shaped settee and granite table on an elevated platform, accessible from the bridge deck and capable of accommodating additional seating by swiveling the helm chair. A conveniently located day head with a vessel sink, vanity, and Tecma electric toilet serves guests and swimmers, accessible via a watertight door from the starboard side deck.

Private Accommodations

The accommodations deck houses three staterooms, each thoughtfully designed for comfort and functionality. The full-beam master suite features a king-size berth with madrona burl berthkeepers and drawer storage beneath, a 40-inch flat screen on the bulkhead, a full-length teak-framed mirror, and a walk-in closet. Nightstands flank the bed, with custom bureaus beneath the opening ports on either side, accented with burl detailing and air conditioning plenums above. The suite includes his and hers heads, each with individual entrances, teak woodwork, L-shaped vanities with under-mount sinks, Silestone counters and decking, Tecma marine electric toilets, and CE-certified opening port lights with screens. A central walk-through shower stall with tempered glass doors connects the two heads, featuring a corner bench seat, Silestone flooring, and tiled walls. A nearby closet conceals a full-size stacked washer and dryer with a sliding door design. The VIP stateroom in the bow offers an island berth measuring 80 by 58 inches, with steps on either side, bookcases, AC vents, a mirrored headboard, and ample storage including drawers, side cabinets, and hanging lockers. A 24-inch flat screen is mounted on the bulkhead. The VIP ensuite includes a single-sink vanity with a mirrored medicine chest, a corner fiberglass shower with frosted glass door, nine-opening port in the shower, and a Tecma electric toilet, continuing the boat's consistent use of glass backsplashes and teak finishes. The third stateroom contains two single bunks mounted athwartships, with a larger 78 by 55-inch lower berth and a 78 by 30-inch Pullman-style upper berth, both featuring madrona burl berthkeepers and 6 feet 7 inches of headroom. This cabin has its own AC controls and an opening port for ventilation. Its ensuite includes a single-sink teak vanity with marble top, fiberglass shower with frosted glass door and molded bench seat, tiled mosaic floor, Tecma electric toilet, and an opening port.

Conclusion

The Outer Reef 700 is a meticulously designed long-range cruiser that balances luxury, practicality, and quality craftsmanship. Its spacious and well-appointed interior, thoughtful exterior features, and attention to detail make it well suited for extended voyages and liveaboard lifestyles. The vessel's build quality, fit, and finish are evident throughout, reflecting Outer Reef's longstanding reputation. While this review focused on the features inspection, the boat also demonstrates commendable handling characteristics, which are explored in a separate evaluation.
