Ocean Runner 29 Center Console: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Ocean Runner 29CC is an offshore center console boat designed for powerful performance and efficient operation. This particular model is equipped with twin 300 horsepower Evinrude E-Tech G2 outboard engines, which contribute to both impressive fuel economy and strong performance characteristics. The integration of advanced technology in these engines makes the 29CC a capable and efficient offshore fishing platform.

Power and Performance

Powered by a pair of 300 horsepower Evinrude E-Tech G2 outboards, the Ocean Runner 29CC achieves a top speed of 57.6 miles per hour using 15 by 21 rubble props spooled up to 6,000 RPM. The best economic cruise speed was recorded at 27.9 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, with a fuel burn of 13.8 gallons per hour, resulting in an efficient 2 miles per gallon and a range of approximately 400 miles. The E-Tech G2 engines feature a clean installation with integrated steering, eliminating hydraulic components and clutter at the stern. Their advanced combustion chamber design, direct injection system, and low-friction engineering contribute to their status as some of the most fuel-efficient outboards available. The two-stroke technology delivers a power stroke on every crankshaft turn, providing superior torque and acceleration compared to four-stroke engines. In testing with an estimated weight of 6,165 pounds, the boat reached planing speed in 3.6 seconds and accelerated to 20 miles per hour in 4.1 seconds. The integrated steering system also supports the addition of an iDock joystick, which greatly simplifies docking maneuvers by allowing combined lateral and rotational movements.

Cockpit and Exterior Features

The cockpit of the Ocean Runner 29CC offers an open and spacious layout measuring five feet fore and aft and seven feet six inches across. The 22-inch bulwarks provide security, though padded bolsters would enhance comfort. Rod holders are mounted on the 9-inch cap rails on both sides, and three deck hatches provide access to storage compartments housing bilge pumps. The stern features two transom-mounted baitwells with transparent lids secured by lift-and-lock latches; these baitwells have rounded edges, blue interiors, and self-draining capabilities. An additional baitwell is integrated into the leaning post, which also holds three rod holders above it. Stereo speakers, including tweeters and woofers, are positioned throughout the cockpit and bow, though it is advisable to turn them off when using the live baitwell to avoid disturbing the bait.

Helm and Controls

The helm console is equipped with a white dash and a modest windscreen supported by stabilizing arms attached to the hardtop. Dual 9-inch displays are centrally mounted, complemented by a VHF microphone and an Evernote Icon color touchscreen display that provides extensive information and customization options for steering and trim. The helm also includes a logically arranged row of rocker switches, though the horn button could benefit from being distinguished in red. The stainless steel steering wheel features a knob and is mounted on a fixed base, with adjustable feedback and turn settings controlled via the touchscreen. Additional controls include trim tab rockers, jack plate controls, and engine start-stop buttons. The Evernote engine controls offer features such as RPM tuning, speed assist, single-lever operation with a sync button, and engine speed synchronization. The iDock joystick enhances docking precision and ease.

Deck and Storage

Above the helm, a sturdy hardtop with integrated handles and beefy supports provides shelter and mounting points for six rod holders along the trailing edge. Spreader lights illuminate both the cockpit and bow areas. An electronics box and reinforced mounts for outriggers are positioned on the hardtop, along with a raised radar base. Forward of the helm is a seat with a hinged base for storage access, and a five-fold door leads into the console interior, which offers open access to batteries and rigging. Side decks feature under-gunnel rod storage for convenience. The bow area includes a raised casting platform measuring six feet nine inches in length, with ample open space and multiple storage compartments. A central hatch with a turn-and-lock latch provides access to a 19-inch wide storage area, though a strut to hold the lid open would be beneficial. The foredeck is equipped with a stainless steel anchor mounted on a roller, a Lumar windlass, and a road locker beneath. Two eight-inch cleats with chocks flank the windlass for secure mooring.

Conclusion

The Ocean Runner 29CC is a robust offshore fishing vessel that combines powerful twin 300 horsepower Evinrude E-Tech G2 outboards with a thoughtfully designed cockpit and helm layout. The advanced two-stroke engine technology delivers excellent torque, fuel efficiency, and clean emissions, enhancing the boat's offshore capabilities. Its spacious deck, ample storage, and integrated features such as the iDock joystick make it a versatile and user-friendly fishing rig well suited for demanding offshore conditions.
