Ocean Alexander 35R: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Ocean Alexander 35R, part of the Revolution series, made its world debut at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show where it earned the Best in Show award. This yacht exemplifies innovative design and luxurious amenities, blending spacious social areas with practical features suitable for both family ownership and charter operations.
Exterior Design and Aft Beach Cabana
One of the most striking exterior features is the aft beach cabana, which elevates the traditional hydraulic swim platform concept into a multifunctional social hub. The cabana includes a stone-surfaced bar with a television, refrigeration, and an ice maker, complemented by a comfortable sofa. Above, smoked glass leads to the deck above, creating an enclosed yet open atmosphere. The adjacent teak deck offers a versatile space for sunning and entertaining, accommodating various furniture configurations and water toys. Stairs on the starboard side provide access to a full head and an exercise room equipped for stationary bikes or rowing machines, with a mounted TV and a glass-enclosed sauna. The aft deck social zone features a U-shaped sofa surrounding a coffee table on an elevated teak platform beneath an extended hardtop with stylized detailing. Boarding gates allow access from both sides, and additional amenities include a sink, cockpit refrigerator, ice maker, and a manually operated 42-inch drop-down TV.
Interior Living Spaces
The salon is accessed via stainless steel framed sliding glass doors, revealing floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides that create an expansive, light-filled environment. Seating includes an L-shaped sofa and two freestanding chairs to port, while to starboard, a wet bar is equipped with a sink, counter space, stemware storage, refrigeration, and an ice maker. The dining area, offset to port, seats ten around a large table beneath ornate overhead decorative work. Massive doors open to merge indoor and outdoor spaces, all fitted with electric shades for privacy. The galley is fully equipped for extended voyages, featuring professional-grade appliances such as Sub-Zero refrigerator freezers, a large convection oven, induction cooktop, extensive storage including a large pantry and wine storage, and an additional ice maker. A bar prep area is located opposite the galley, and a dayhead is conveniently positioned to starboard.
Private Accommodations
The full-beam master stateroom is located forward on the main deck, featuring a center-mounted king-size berth with nightstands, hull-side windows with integrated port lights, a desk, and a sitting area beneath a large window. The overhead height reaches 7 feet 2 inches, enhancing the spacious feel. Storage includes under-berth compartments and walk-in closets on both sides. The master head is notably innovative, with his and her sinks, separate enclosed water closets, a centrally located tub, and an enclosed shower, distinguishing it as one of the most unique yacht heads observed. Four guest staterooms are accessed via a staircase adjacent to the dining area, arranged around a central foyer with marble accents and a lighted display case. Two queen staterooms aft and two twin staterooms forward feature berths that slide together to form queens, each with private en-suite facilities and hull-side windows. The guest quarters are designed to provide comfort and privacy.
Bridge Deck and Upper Social Areas
The bridge deck offers two distinct social zones: exterior and interior. The exterior aft area includes a circular table seating ten under a hardtop, an outdoor galley to port, and a sun deck with L-shaped sofas and coffee tables. A pop-up sunshade provides protection from the sun, and a crane facilitates use of the area as a boat deck. Inside, the space resembles a refined social club with a stone-surfaced bar, four bar stools, and large windows offering panoramic views. Seating includes an L-shaped leather sofa and two freestanding chairs, complemented by a 65-inch TV. Adjacent is a day head. Additional stairs lead to the sky deck, which features a jacuzzi surrounded by sun pads, a starboard bar, dual forward-facing double-wide seats, and a flip-down 50-inch TV, all sheltered by a hardtop. The bow social zone includes a U-shaped settee around a pedestal table and a large sun pad, with an optional pop-up sunshade supported by stainless stanchions.
Crew Quarters and Operational Areas
Forward of the galley, stairs lead to the crew quarters, which are fully forward and include a dining area, modest galley, captain's stateroom, two twin berth staterooms, additional refrigeration adjacent to the laundry area, and a passageway with a secret entrance to the guest staterooms. This layout supports separation of crew and guest spaces, enhancing privacy and operational efficiency.
Pilot House and Engine Room
The pilot house, located on the second deck, is the sole operating station and reflects the design influence of Evan K. Marshall. It features a floating panel with three large integrated monitors, a lower carbon fiber panel housing engine monitors, compass, autopilot, rudder angle indicator, and an Atlas Marine electric bus controller on the port side. Seating includes three Stidd helm seats with high backs, flip armrests, and footrests, with the center captain's seat equipped with display and autopilot controls on the armrests. Watertight doors provide access on both sides, and a captain's workstation is positioned abaft to port. The engine room is well organized and clearly labeled, housing twin MAN V-12 engines rated at 1900 horsepower each in the standard configuration, with the featured boat equipped with twin MTU V-12 engines producing 2600 horsepower each.
Power and Performance
Ocean Alexander conducted extensive sea trials off Fort Lauderdale, revealing a top speed of 22.3 knots with the MTU engines. Cruising at 80% load (approximately 2100 RPM) yields an average speed of 17.6 knots, with a fuel burn of 201 gallons per hour translating to 0.1 nautical miles per gallon and a range of 405 nautical miles. For long-distance cruising, throttling back to 1200 RPM results in a speed of 10 knots and an extended range of 1254 nautical miles. These performance figures demonstrate the yacht's capability for both efficient cruising and higher-speed transit.
Conclusion
The Ocean Alexander 35R represents a significant advancement in yacht design, combining luxurious accommodations, innovative social spaces, and robust performance. Its thoughtful layout supports both family ownership and charter operations, with dedicated crew quarters and versatile entertaining areas. Recognized as Best in Show at its debut, the 35R stands out as a refined and capable yacht that meets the demands of discerning owners and guests alike.
