The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1988 Nonsuch Auxiliary Sail offers a unique blend of design and performance, making it a popular choice among cruising sailors. Here are some pros and cons to consider:

Pros

Innovative Cat Rig Design: The Nonsuch features a distinctive unstayed mast with a large single sail, simplifying sail handling and reducing the need for complex rigging.

Easy to Sail Short-Handed: Its sail plan and rigging make it manageable for solo sailors or small crews, ideal for leisurely cruising.

Spacious Interior: The wide beam and efficient layout provide ample living space below deck, enhancing comfort on extended voyages.

Stable and Comfortable Ride: The full keel and moderate displacement contribute to steady handling and a smooth ride, even in choppy conditions.

Low Maintenance Rigging: With fewer lines and no standing rigging, upkeep is generally easier compared to traditional sailboats.

Cons

Limited Upwind Performance: The cat rig can be less efficient when sailing close-hauled, potentially resulting in slower progress upwind compared to sloop-rigged boats.

Larger Sail Area to Manage: The single large sail can be physically demanding to handle in strong winds without proper reefing systems.

Heavier Weight: The full keel and solid construction add weight, which might affect acceleration and speed.

Less Common Design: The unique rig and hull shape may limit aftermarket parts availability and require specialized knowledge for repairs or modifications.

Reduced Sail Plan Versatility: Without headsails, sail combinations are limited, which may restrict performance tuning in varying wind conditions.

Made For

The 1988 Nonsuch Auxiliary Sail is designed for sailors who appreciate a blend of traditional elegance and modern convenience.
