You will be hard-pressed to find a better-maintained freshwater-only Nonsuch 30 Ultra. She has always had the utmost in care, upgrades and improvements and her owners' attention to detail is exceptionally evident the moment you step on board.
With its large, wide and secure cockpit, the Nonsuch 30 is ideal for day sailing with friends, family and children. Its simple sail plan and single sheet makes ââ?¬Å?crew-lessââ?¬ï¿½ sailing a breeze. Its fin keel and spade rudder make it highly maneuverable in an anchorage. The large, open cabin of the Ultra version provides spacious and comfortable accommodations for extended cruising. With hot water, air conditioning and refrigeration, Williwaw provides the necessary amenities for enjoyable summer weekends and vacations on board.
The Nonsuch cat-rigged sailboat is uniquely Canadian, inspired by Gordon Fisher, designed by Mark Ellis, built by Hinterhoeller and named after the famous Nonsuch, a 50-foot square rigged ketch that successfully sailed into the Canadian Arctic in 1668, clearing the way for the creation of the Hudson's Bay Company two years later.
The Ultra model added a unique dimension to the Nonsuch line and modern-day sailing by adding the comfort of a more traditional interior, while still maintaining the competitive sailing advantages specific to the Cat-rigged design. The long waterline permits higher pointing ability than one sail would normally allow, while allowing the convenience of tacking by a turn of the wheel giving the racer in you an advantage. The fin keel and spade rudder also do away with the windward helm characteristic of some Cape Cod catboats.
With a free-standing mast situated at the bow, the interior volume of a Nonsuch is 20% to 30% larger when compared to other 30 ft. sailboats. "Williwaw" has been updated, upgraded, and meticulously maintained since she was first splashed in 1987.
She will sleep 5 and features a separate forward stateroom with a full-sized double bunk to port. A full-length hanging locker, vanity and ample storage area, including drawers and shelves, are incorporated in this stateroom. The head is forward and to starboard and has a separate shower stall with seat. The galley is located on the portside approximately amidships and is L-shaped. The main salon sleeps three; two on the starboard settee with an extension over the convertible dining table, and one on the port settee. The richness of the interior is accented with a teak and holly sole yet remains airy with a total of 7 opening ports and four overhead hatches that are all equipped with screens.
With her 5 foot draft, well-maintained engine and electrical self-sufficiency, this Nonsuch 30 Ultra is ideal for cruising anywhere as a reliable, yet simple design. It is under a new full winter cover and available to be seen at anytime. Located at our marina in Buffalo, NY

The Biggest Pros and Cons
The 1987 Nonsuch 30 Ultra is a distinctive sailboat known for its unique design and comfortable cruising capabilities. Here are some pros and cons to consider:
Pros
Spacious Interior: The Nonsuch 30 Ultra features a roomy and well-appointed cabin, offering excellent comfort for extended cruising.
Single Sail Cat Rig: Its wishbone boom and unstayed mast simplify sail handling, making it ideal for short-handed sailing.
Stable and Sturdy: The broad beam and moderate displacement provide good stability and a comfortable ride in various conditions.
Good Upwind Performance: Compared to earlier Nonsuch models, the 30 Ultra has improved upwind capabilities thanks to a refined hull design.
Low Maintenance Rigging: The absence of standing rigging reduces maintenance time and cost.
Cons
Limited Sail Plan: The single large sail can be challenging to manage in heavy winds without reefing, and sail options are more limited compared to sloop rigs.
Less Maneuverable: The full keel and design focus on stability may result in less agility and slower tacking compared to fin keel boats.
Interior Headroom: While spacious, the cabin headroom may be lower than some modern cruisers, potentially affecting comfort for taller sailors.
Resale Value: The unique design appeals to a niche market, which could impact resale opportunities and pricing.
Performance Trade-offs: The design prioritizes comfort and ease of handling over speed, so it may not satisfy sailors seeking a high-performance racer.
Made For
The 1987 Nonsuch 30 Ultra is ideal for sailors seeking a spacious, easy-to-handle cruiser that combines classic design with modern performance. Its single sail cat rig makes it perfect for solo sailors or small crews who want a comfortable and efficient sailing experience.
