The Swan 46 was designed by the world famous German Frers, who was at the height of his career and one of the world's top yacht designers during the design and construction of the Swan 46, it stands out as one his pinnacle designs. In short, the 46 is an iconic, timeless masterpiece. Built by Nautor AB of Pietarsaari , Finland who needs no introduction in the world of sailing yacht construction. This is a double pedigree yacht, designer and builder.
The 46 was conceived as the "Gentlemen's Racer" and Family Cruising Yacht after the racing season was over. Swan 46's have successfully won many of the world's most prestigious races and circumnavigated the globe. If you were to rate a yacht on a 10 step ladder in performance, looks, build quality, safety and comfort; the 46 would be either a 9 or a 10 depending on your personal tastes. Built to Lloyds LR Certification, the 46 is suitable for any ocean. It has been said while sailing in the low teens, she feels like a Mercedes Benz S Class on the Freeway at 80 miles an hour.
On deck the 46 is all business, the winch layout is functional and generous. In Race mode, she would sail with a crew of 8-10. Family cruising, she probably tops out 12-14 for day sails with 7-8 for overnight accommodations. The 46 can be double handed with experienced crew. Single handed will be a little busy with current winch layout.
Below, the Swan 46 has a luxurious interior made like Scandinavian furniture. Old growth, varnished teak panels and laminated teak trims is one of Nautor's trademarks. The center line double size bed in the aft cabin is well thought out and extremely comfortable. Private en suite head with shower is conveniently located to starboard. The aft cabin is totally private from the rest of the yacht.
The galley is aft and to port, spacious, functional and plenty of stowage.
Double stainless sink and separate refrigerator / freezer, allow for provisioning for extended cruising or a Hawaii race. The cook (s) are not isolated from the crew during meal preparation, the open saloon allows for everyone to see each other for conversation and visiting.
Forward of the main bulkhead is the guest / crew head. Both heads have the legendary Blakes toilets, a work of art in their own right.
The forward cabin is dual purpose: Race mode, the two matched bunks hinge up against the hull for sail stowage. In Cruising mode, the bunks make a V Berth with a filler piece, sleeps two adults or three kids. There is room for some sails with the bunks down.
If you're looking for a pedigree yacht which will provide you with endless joy and pride of ownership, the Swan 46 ticks a lot of boxes. For a little more money than a later model Catalina 42, you could own a Swan.
