MJM 38V: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The MJM 38V is the latest addition to MJM's fleet for 2027, designed as a versatile day boat that combines the performance of a race boat with the classic aesthetics of a Down East style vessel. Measuring 38 feet 6 inches in length overall with an 11-foot beam, this model is powered by twin Mercury 425 horsepower V10 outboard engines, delivering a combined 850 horsepower. The boat features a 250-gallon fuel capacity and is equipped with advanced stabilization and control systems, making it suitable for challenging sea conditions.

Power and Performance

During sea trials conducted in rough conditions with northeast winds and three to five-foot seas, the MJM 38V demonstrated impressive performance and handling. The boat achieved a top speed of 58.1 miles per hour at wide open throttle. Its best cruising speed was recorded at 31 miles per hour at 4,250 RPM, consuming 26.3 gallons per hour and providing a range of approximately 265 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was notable, reaching 10 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, 20 miles per hour in seven seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 10 seconds. The vessel planes smoothly around 3,200 RPM and maintains excellent stability even in rough seas, aided by the optional Seakeeper Ride system which effectively minimizes roll and bow rise during acceleration.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The MJM 38V features a thoughtfully designed exterior with a nearly single-level deck extending to the forward portion of the vessel, providing ample space and headroom. The cockpit includes seating for at least six people around a custom Release Marine teak table that can be adjusted to multiple positions, including a lowered coffee table configuration. The boat is outfitted with Sunbrella upholstery, with plans to offer Ultraleather as a standard option in the future. Additional exterior amenities include JL Audio speakers, USB and USB-C charging ports, a Lewmar vertical windlass with a polished stainless steel Bruce claw anchor, and a stainless steel chain anchor rode supplied from the factory. The transom area benefits from electronic steering integration, allowing for a spacious walk area, a swim platform, a swim ladder, a 30 amp shore power connection, freshwater dock hookup, and an aft transom shower.

Helm and Pilot House

The enclosed pilot house is designed for comfort and functionality, providing excellent protection from the elements. The helm features a modern tilt steering wheel, replacing the traditional destroyer wheel found on earlier MJM models, enhancing operator comfort. Twin Garmin navigation screens, a Ritchie compass, bow thruster controls, Skyhook station-keeping, and Mercury binnacle throttles are all ergonomically arranged. The helm also includes a Garmin VHF radio and heating and air conditioning vents. Switches are organized in a single row beneath the navigation displays for ease of use. The windshield wipers proved highly effective during rough conditions, restoring visibility quickly. The pilot house also includes opening windows reminiscent of classic Down East lobster boats, enhancing ventilation and connection to the outdoors.

Interior and Equipment Access

The MJM 38V incorporates a small cuddy cabin to starboard, housing an equipment center with accessible 12-volt and 120-volt distribution panels, generator controls, ignition keys for the Mercury engines, Garmin equipment, and fuse access. The boat emphasizes ease of maintenance and system accessibility, with bilge areas finished in bilge coat for durability and cleanliness. Inside the bilge compartments, owners have access to critical components such as sump pumps, bilge pumps, seacocks, JL amplifier systems, water heaters, engine and house batteries, raw water pumps, and fuel filters. The main machinery space contains Groco strainers for generator and air conditioning systems, Mercury Racor fuel filters, and AGM Victron Energy Group 4D house batteries. The vessel carries two fuel types: a large gasoline tank for the outboards and a separate approximately 23-gallon diesel tank for the generator, allowing extended operation of onboard systems like air conditioning.

Private Accommodations and Head

The boat includes a well-appointed head compartment featuring ebony-matched wood cabinetry and stone countertops consistent with the vessel's refined interior aesthetic. The head area provides access to waste and water tanks, as well as critical systems such as the Xantrex inverter, battery switches, water pump, and air conditioning unit. The layout ensures that all essential equipment is easily reachable for maintenance and inspection, underscoring MJM's commitment to practical design.

Docking and Maneuverability

Docking the MJM 38V is facilitated by a combination of twin high-horsepower engines, a joystick control system, and a bow thruster, enabling precise and effortless handling even in strong winds. The spacious deck layout and well-placed controls contribute to a smooth docking experience. The boat's responsive Mercury outboards and four-blade propellers provide ample thrust, allowing quick recovery from bow tuck and confident maneuvering in challenging conditions.

Conclusion

The MJM 38V day boat successfully blends high-performance capabilities with practical design features suitable for family outings and challenging sea conditions. Its powerful twin Mercury outboards, advanced stabilization systems, and thoughtful ergonomics deliver a comfortable and confident ride. The vessel's attention to equipment accessibility, refined interior finishes, and versatile deck arrangements make it an excellent choice for those seeking a capable and stylish day boat. Despite adverse weather during testing, the MJM 38V demonstrated resilience, stability, and ease of operation, confirming its position as a well-rounded addition to MJM's lineup.
