McKee Craft Freedom 24: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

McKee Craft developed the Freedom 24 as a smaller, more manageable version of their successful Freedom 28 tournament-class fishing boat. Designed to fit the average angler's ability to tow, store, and utilize, the Freedom 24 retains the key features and performance characteristics of its larger sister while offering a size and price point accessible to more anglers. Despite its smaller dimensions, the Freedom 24 delivers impressive offshore capabilities and a smooth, stable ride.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The Freedom 24 measures 24 feet in length with an 8-foot 6-inch beam and carries a dry weight of 3,600 pounds. It features a sharp bow entry and a 24.5-degree dead rise hull, which effectively slices through heavy rolling seas and smooths the ride. The boat draws only 22 inches of draft, allowing access to shallow fishing areas. The bow area includes a nested slot for a Danforth-style anchor secured with twist locks, padded bolsters, aggressive non-skid gunwales, recessed elliptical stainless steel rails, and three and a half inches of toe kick space. A cooler with a padded lid doubles as additional seating, with the lid oriented backward to shield it from wind at speed. The stern features a benchless design for ample room to fight fish, twin 170-quart fish boxes, a 52-gallon recirculating live well, and five rod holders integrated into the T-top back rail on each side. Floors are designed with flapper-style drain valves for efficient drainage, and engine access is provided through the starboard walk-through.

Helm and Functional Layout

The helm station is thoughtfully arranged with ample space for instrumentation, featuring analog gauges clustered to port and switches and breakers aligned to the right of the tilt hydraulic steering wheel. A large dry storage compartment or porta-potty space is located within the helm area. The helm seat leaning post offers comfort with a flip-down footrest. On the starboard side, fresh and raw water wash-down hoses are neatly concealed behind covers, accompanied by a two-drawer tackle storage locker. The standard T-top includes front and rear spotlights, a locking electronics box, and zippered overhead storage. Additional storage is found at the back of the helm in the form of drawers and tackle boxes.

Power and Performance

The Freedom 24 supports twin engines up to a combined 400 horsepower, with the test boat equipped with twin 150-horsepower Honda VTEC four-stroke outboards. Honda's VTEC technology, which stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control, optimizes intake valve operation to enhance power, torque, RPM range, and fuel efficiency. The boat carries up to 180 gallons of fuel and 13 gallons of fresh water, enabling extended fishing trips. Performance testing showed the Freedom 24 planes quickly in 3.14 seconds, reaches 30 miles per hour in 6.8 seconds, cruises comfortably at 23.1 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM burning 7.5 gallons per hour for a range of 499 miles, and tops out at 46 miles per hour at 6,200 RPM with a fuel burn of 31 gallons per hour. Overall, the boat delivers a fast, smooth, and dry ride.

Construction and Additional Features

The Freedom 24 is constructed using pressure foam-filled techniques, rendering the boat unsinkable while providing insulation that helps maintain cooler temperatures in fish holds, food storage, and beverage compartments. The design mimics the bow height of the larger Freedom 28, giving the boat a commanding presence on the water despite its smaller size. Practical features such as recessed stainless steel rails, padded bolsters, and well-placed storage solutions enhance both safety and convenience for anglers.

Conclusion

The McKee Craft Freedom 24 successfully delivers the performance, features, and fishability of its larger sister boat in a more accessible size. Its thoughtful design, robust construction, and efficient power options make it a compelling choice for anglers seeking a tournament-class fishing boat that is easier to tow, store, and operate. The Freedom 24 offers a smooth, dry ride and quick planing capabilities, ensuring anglers can reach fishing grounds swiftly and comfortably.
