Overview

The Mastercraft NXT 22 is a recently redesigned and upgraded towboat that caters to both active families and water sports enthusiasts. Positioned as one of Mastercraft's highest volume models, it offers a compelling balance of value and performance with a base 373 horsepower V8 Ilmor 6.0 liter engine. The 2023 model year introduces the all-new Gen 2 surf system, which automates ballast, trim tabs, and GPS speed settings to create customizable wake profiles at the touch of a button.

Gen 2 Surf System and Wake Customization

A major highlight of the NXT 22 is the Gen 2 surf system, designed to simplify wake shaping for various skill levels. This system eliminates manual adjustments by providing factory preset profiles accessible via the helm touchscreen. Operators can select from surf left or right, wake (with full ballast for intermediate to advanced riders), wake beginner (zero ballast with a target speed of 17.5 mph), and a ski profile (no ballast and higher speed). The system controls five ballast tanks—one front, two aft, and two Gen 2 bags atop the aft tanks—allowing on-the-fly wave adjustments. Manual overrides for ballast and trim are also available alongside the automated settings, while an attitude adjustment plate provides additional bow control.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The NXT 22 measures 23 feet 10 inches in length overall, with a beam of 8 feet 3 inches and a draft of 2 feet 4 inches. Its distinctive pickle-fork bow features a sporty, flared design that enhances both aesthetics and functionality by improving wake transition and reducing hull shock. The bow interior is spacious and comfortable, measuring 3 feet 5 inches long by 4 feet 10 inches wide, with wrap-around bolsters and hinged side seats that provide access to storage compartments. Additional storage includes an anchor locker beneath the center bow cushion and port-side compartments. The boat is equipped with five pull-up cleats strategically placed for convenience. A rear-facing spotter seat is located to port, adjacent to a dry storage compartment equipped with a courtesy light, 12-volt outlet, and slip-resistant matting. The cockpit features a classic towboat layout with wrap-around bench seating, an aft-facing companion seat, and ample storage beneath hinged seats. The battery bank, breakers, and main shut-off switch are housed beneath the port bench, while SeaDek-treated steps facilitate safe entry and exit at the stern. The collapsible tower with integrated bimini includes swiveling board racks and a fixed tow rope post, with Klipsch audio speakers mounted on the crossbar.

Power and Performance

Powered by the upgraded Ilmor 6.0 liter V8 engine producing 373 horsepower, the NXT 22 delivers strong performance and efficient fuel consumption. During testing, the boat reached a top speed of 40 miles per hour at 5,200 RPM. Economical cruising was achieved at 3,500 RPM, corresponding to 25 miles per hour. Endurance tests showed 4.8 hours at 3,000 RPM (18.5 mph) and 6.8 hours at 2,500 RPM (11.5 mph), indicating solid range for extended outings. Handling characteristics were agile and responsive, with smooth transitions through gradual and tight turns, no noticeable slippage, and excellent helm feedback. The 3.5 turns lock-to-lock steering and 12-inch rudder contribute to precise control. The pickle-fork bow design aids in cutting through wakes with minimal hull shock, maintaining a calm ride for passengers.
