Mastercraft 30: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Mastercraft 300 represents a notable shift for Mastercraft, a company traditionally known for ski boats, as they venture into the cruiser market. This review provides a detailed examination of the boat's layout, features, and design elements, highlighting the craftsmanship and thoughtful integration of amenities that Mastercraft has incorporated into this model.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The Mastercraft 300 features an extended swim platform measuring three feet four inches in depth and seven feet eight inches across, equipped with ten-inch cleats, convenient storage compartments, a water inlet, and a hot and cold shower with a nozzle. A distinctive design element is the inclusion of side decks accessed via step-ups primarily intended for boarding from docks, notable for the absence of handrails. These steps conceal recessed speakers and LED lighting, enhancing both functionality and ambiance. The cockpit area includes an aft-facing seat that converts into a lounger by sliding the seating arrangement, with storage available beneath all seats. The cockpit also boasts a quartz countertop with a mirrored finish underneath, a stainless steel sink with hot and cold water, and controls for the integrated speaker system and a TV lift on the starboard side. Additional conveniences include a small port-side area for personal items with an MP3 port and 12-volt jack, a teak deck, and a cockpit refrigerator beneath the starboard quartz counter. A Kenyan smoke-free stove is installed with safety features such as an external control panel and an automatic cutoff when closed. Overhead, a hardtop with sunroofs and a retractable sunshade covers the aft platform, complemented by multi-color courtesy lighting both on the deck and overhead. The cockpit walkthrough features gas-assisted sole storage with a drainage channel, and storage compartments within storage for enhanced utility.

Helm and Bridge Features

The helm station is designed for comfort and functionality, featuring a double-wide helm seat with a flip-up bolster and an angled footrest to accommodate both seated and standing operators. The helm area is finished with teak decking and includes a walkthrough windshield for easy access to the bow. Instrumentation is comprehensive, with dual engine displays showing RPM, fuel, voltage, engine temperature, and oil pressure. Push-button switches flank the instrumentation, each illuminated when active, though the horn button could benefit from a distinctive red label for quick identification. Central to the helm is an autopilot system paired with a GPS Map 5208, engine synchronizers on the starboard side, and a power-assisted tilt wheel. Dual ignition systems, thruster controls, and automatic trim tab adjustments contribute to ease of handling and stability. The helm also features climate control vents for heating and air conditioning, digital throttle controls that require minimal acclimation, and a joystick for the ZF Joystick Maneuvering System (JMS) located just behind the throttles.

Bow Area and Deck Hardware

The bow area includes a sun pad measuring five feet four inches fore and aft and three feet across, equipped with stainless steel grab handles on both sides. This sun pad converts easily into a chaise lounge, enhancing relaxation options. Port lights on either side of the sun pad provide natural light to the main cabin, complemented by a hatch that serves as an emergency exit. Forward on the pickle fork bow, a Maxwell windlass with remote control is installed, surrounded by one-and-a-half-inch thick rails standing at a minimum height of one foot eleven inches. The deck is finished with non-skid surfaces throughout and outfitted with ten-inch stainless steel cleats, ensuring secure mooring.
