Mako Pro 17 Skiff CC: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Mako ProSkiff 17 is designed as a stable and rugged fishing platform, featuring an innovative hull design termed the advanced inverted V. Constructed with ejected foam and equipped with a deck liner, this model aims to deliver durability and functionality for anglers.

Power and Performance

The test boat was powered by a single Mercury 60 horsepower EFI four-stroke engine paired with a 10 by 13 propeller and fueled by a portable 6.6-gallon tank. During testing, it achieved a top speed of 34.9 miles per hour at 5,800 RPM while consuming 5.1 gallons per hour, resulting in an average range of 37 statute miles. At a more economical 4,000 RPM, the boat cruised at 21.3 miles per hour with a fuel burn of 2.5 gallons per hour, extending the range to 47 statute miles. The vessel demonstrated quick responsiveness with a time to plane of four seconds and accelerated from zero to 30 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

At the stern, the ProSkiff 17 features a full-beam raised aft casting deck with a non-skid surface, providing a secure platform for fishing activities. A grab handle facilitates easy reboarding, and the fuel line and engine cables are neatly routed through a watertight fitting. Beneath the deck are mounting locations for the battery and portable fuel tank. The helm seat doubles as a mounted 85-quart cooler with a padded top for added comfort. The helm console is robust, equipped with four rod holders on the port side, an integrated stainless steel grab handle, navigation light mounts, and an acrylic windscreen. Storage is available under the console, and the steering wheel is large and padded for comfort. Electronics mounting space is ample, and lighted switches are conveniently positioned on either side of the wheel. The throttle is mounted high on the starboard side, allowing ease of use both seated and standing. Molded-in grab handles are present on both sides of the front seat, and the wraparound gunnels are finished to a high standard. Moving forward, the bow offers a large, raised casting deck with a solid feel and a non-skid surface. Integrated into the deck is a watertight storage compartment, and in front of the console is a wide, comfortably padded seat with a backrest. Beneath this seat lies an 8-gallon aerated bait well.

Dimensions and Build

The ProSkiff measures 17 feet 4 inches in length with a beam of 80 inches. It has a dry weight of 950 pounds and a shallow draft of 8 inches. The hull features a 10-degree dead rise at the transom, contributing to its stable ride and rugged feel. Overall, the boat presents a high-quality finish and a design that stands out among skiffs.

Conclusion

The Mako ProSkiff 17 offers a well-rounded package for anglers seeking a stable, durable, and thoughtfully designed fishing skiff. Its advanced hull design, efficient powertrain, and practical deck layout combine to provide a reliable and comfortable experience on the water. The quality of construction and attention to detail make it one of the better-finished boats in its class.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2013 Mako Pro 17 Skiff CC is a versatile and popular choice for anglers and boaters who want a reliable, shallow-water fishing platform. Here are some of the pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Shallow Draft: The Skiff design allows for excellent performance in shallow waters, making it ideal for flats fishing and navigating tight, shallow areas.

Center Console Layout: Provides 360-degree access around the boat, which is great for fishing and maneuverability.

Durable Construction: Built with a solid fiberglass hull, the Mako Pro 17 Skiff CC is known for its toughness and longevity.

Good Storage: Offers ample storage compartments for tackle, gear, and safety equipment.

Stable Ride: Despite its skiff design, it maintains good stability even in moderate chop.

Fuel Efficiency: The boat’s lightweight design coupled with an efficient outboard engine helps keep fuel consumption reasonable.

Easy to Trailer: Compact size and light weight make it easy to tow and launch.

Cons

Limited Seating: Seating is minimal and basic, which might be less comfortable for longer trips or for passengers not focused on fishing.

Modest Power Range: The boat is designed primarily for smaller outboard motors, so it may lack the speed and power for those wanting high-performance cruising.

Limited Cabin or Shelter: Being a center console skiff, there is no cabin or significant shelter from the elements.

Basic Features: Compared to larger or newer models, it may lack some modern amenities and electronics.

Not Ideal for Rough Waters: While stable for its size, it is best suited for calm to moderate conditions and may not perform well in rough seas.
