Mako 234 CC: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Mako 234 Center Console is a versatile offshore fishing boat that also accommodates family recreational activities. Designed with a focus on fishing functionality, it integrates practical features for anglers while maintaining comfortable seating and handling characteristics suitable for a variety of boating purposes.

Fishing Features and Deck Layout

Upon boarding, anglers will find a well-appointed bait station adjacent to the leaning post, equipped with a live well, storage for Plano tackle drawers, lure tubes, and rod holders. The starboard quarter includes a dedicated area for thawing bait, complete with a cutting surface and washdown, as well as convenient holders for tools such as knives and pliers. Rod storage is ample, with three holders per side under the gunwale for rods up to seven feet, plus flush-mounted rod holders and rocket launchers located at the bait station and hardtop. Catch storage is facilitated by two in-deck self-draining fish lockers, two 86-quart insulated fish lockers at the bow, and a large 396-quart in-deck locker also at the bow, which includes a holder for a five-gallon bucket. Courtesy and spreader lights are installed forward and aft to support night fishing.

Seating and Exterior Design

The boat offers multiple seating options including cushioned bow seats, a cushion atop a 72-quart cooler in front of the console, a double-wide helm seat, and a flip-up rumble seat at the stern. The one-inch rails are recessed within the cap rails, contributing to a streamlined profile. Access to the aft platform is through a door, providing a flat service area for engine checks and light maintenance. The hull features two lifting strakes and a straight chine that extends forward to form a spray rail, with a 21-degree deadrise transitioning to a flat running surface at the keel to enhance planing performance. Trim tabs are recessed into the hull, and underwater lighting surrounds the boat.

Helm and Electronics

The helm is ergonomically designed with a lockable electronics box supported by gas-assist struts and a mirror on the underside for easy visibility of contents. A dome light beneath the box switches between white and red illumination. The helm features a three-piece windshield for easy replacement of damaged sections, a Garmin GPSMap 4210 chartplotter, and three SmartKraft gauges that reduce clutter. The steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base and includes a steering knob, while a lockable storage compartment with a gasketed seal is integrated into the console. Battery switches are conveniently located on the aft bulkhead inside the console, with battery access beneath.

Anchoring and Ground Tackle

The elevated foredeck facilitates ground tackle operations without the need to bend down. A hatch to the side provides access to the anchor rode, which is routed through a notch in the mold. The anchor roller is securely bolted to the foredeck and complemented by a 10-inch cleat.

Power and Performance

The Mako 234 Center Console measures 23 feet 4 inches in length overall, with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a hull draft of 18 inches. The boat's empty weight is 4,100 pounds. During testing with two occupants, full fuel of 88 gallons, and twin 150-horsepower Mercury four-stroke engines turning 17-pitch propellers, the estimated test weight was 6,038 pounds. The boat achieved a top speed of 46.6 miles per hour at 5,900 RPM, consuming 28 gallons per hour and providing a range of approximately 203 miles. The most efficient cruise speed was 23.6 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM, with a fuel burn of 7.7 gallons per hour, extending the range to 374 miles and endurance to nearly 16 hours with a 10% fuel reserve. The flat running surface at the keel contributed to a rapid time to plane of 2.7 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds. The boat rises 18 degrees upon acceleration, momentarily obstructing forward visibility, so it is recommended to throttle up fully to plane before reducing to cruising speed. Minimal trim adjustments are needed to optimize spray and running angle, which settles at approximately 5 degrees bow high.

Handling Characteristics

The Mako 234 is highly responsive and enjoyable to drive, exhibiting a clean, dry ride with minimal spray due to its wide flared bows. It handles turns comfortably, leaning about 21 degrees into them while maintaining good speed without prop ventilation, even when trimmed. The boat's performance aligns well with high expectations for the Mako brand, offering a stable and confident ride in various conditions.

Conclusion

Overall, the Mako 234 Center Console delivers a well-rounded package for offshore fishing and family boating. Its thoughtful fishing amenities, ergonomic helm layout, and strong performance characteristics make it a capable and enjoyable vessel. The combination of efficient power, responsive handling, and practical design features positions it as a reliable choice for anglers and recreational boaters alike.
