Mako 212 Center Console: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Mako 212 is a 21-foot 5-inch offshore center console boat designed to blend fishing features, performance, and spaciousness into a compact 21-foot package. With a beam of 8 feet 6 inches, the 212 aims to provide anglers with a versatile and capable platform for offshore fishing excursions.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The boat features a thoughtfully arranged cockpit with multiple fishing amenities. On the starboard side, there is a built-in seat with a removable bottom hatch that provides non-skid surface and deep storage beneath. The port side mirrors this setup but incorporates a bait well instead. The cockpit corners include port and starboard drains for efficient dewatering. Along both gunnels, rod holders are mounted, complemented by six-inch pull-up cleats and under-gunnel rod storage racks. The large leaning post is upholstered in stain-resistant vinyl and equipped with an anodized aluminum wraparound grab rail, four rod holders, and a flip-open storage compartment beneath. A non-skid footrest is mounted on the leaning post support, and there is space underneath to store a cooler. Despite the sizable leaning post, the cockpit maintains ample room for three anglers to fish comfortably.

Helm and Console Features

The helm is designed to accommodate up to a 14-inch electronic display, with a nearly horizontal DTS throttle and a large stainless steel steering wheel. Two multifunction SmartCraft gauges are positioned just ahead of the wheel, enhancing the driving experience by allowing precise power adjustments at speed. All switches are grouped to the starboard side of the wheel, although the ignition key placement could be improved to avoid knee contact. A built-in grab rail on the T-top support and a well-angled footrest contribute to ergonomic comfort. The console houses an enclosed head compartment with limited space, which also provides access to the battery, battery switch, and helm wiring. The front of the console features a double-wide seat with a padded backrest. The optional anodized aluminum T-top includes four rocket launcher rod holders and two adjustable spreader lights.

Bow and Forward Features

Forward on the port side is the fueling point integrated into the cap rail, which includes a raised drip edge and a channel to divert water, along with a 12-inch high stainless steel rail. The bow area is relatively large for a 21-foot boat due to the beam carried forward. A deep anchor locker equipped with brackets for a Danforth anchor, an 8-inch cleat, and stainless steel chocks facilitates line handling. On both port and starboard sides, large insulated fish boxes with glass lids drain overboard; however, the lids would benefit from gas struts to hold them open. The fish box covers are constructed using a closed mold process, resulting in solid, double-sided finished parts.

Power and Performance

The test boat was powered by a single Mercury 225 horsepower Verado engine paired with a 15.5 by 17 stainless steel propeller. The Mako 212 carries 93 US gallons of fuel, has a draft of 14 inches, and an 18-degree dead rise at the transom. The approximate dry weight is 3,100 pounds. Performance testing recorded an average top speed of 41 miles per hour at 5,800 rpm, consuming 22.7 gallons per hour, which yields a range of 151 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The most economical cruise speed was 24.3 miles per hour at 3,500 rpm, burning only 7.6 gallons per hour and extending the range to 267 statute miles. The boat planes in an average of 4.3 seconds and accelerates from zero to 30 miles per hour in 9.1 seconds. The 212 maintains a slight 2% bow angle at cruise and rides relatively level, with recessed trim tabs that are seldom needed.

Transom and Maintenance Access

The transom includes a watertight hatch that provides bilge access for maintenance of onboard systems. Non-skid deck areas flank the engine on both sides, and the port side features a mount for a removable, pole-style three-step reboarding ladder measuring 30 inches.

Conclusion

The Mako 212 center console fishing boat delivers a well-rounded offshore fishing platform with a spacious cockpit, thoughtful fishing amenities, and solid performance characteristics. Its design balances comfort, functionality, and ride quality, making it a capable choice for anglers seeking a compact yet versatile offshore rig.
