Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Mako 19CPX Bayboat is a versatile 18-foot, 10-inch vessel designed to accommodate both fishing enthusiasts and active families. Combining sporty performance with practical fishing features, the 19CPX offers a balanced experience for playtime on the water as well as serious angling.

Power and Performance

Powered by a Mercury 150 horsepower four-stroke outboard engine paired with a 19-inch pitch inertia three-blade propeller, the 19CPX delivers impressive performance metrics. It achieved a top speed of 50.9 miles per hour at 5,700 RPM while consuming 13.9 gallons per hour, resulting in a maximum range of approximately 155 miles at wide-open throttle. The most efficient cruising speed was found at 3,000 RPM, where the boat ran at 22.8 miles per hour with a fuel burn of 3.6 gallons per hour, extending the range to 271 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration tests showed the 2,857-pound boat reached planing speed in 3.5 seconds, 20 miles per hour in 6 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 8.2 seconds, providing ample power for towing activities such as tubing. Maneuverability was agile, with the boat handling slalom passes and tight turns confidently. The flared bow design contributed to a dry deck even when running through choppy waters and wakes. Steering is facilitated by SeaStar hydraulic steering, enhancing driver control.

Fishing Features

The 19CPX is well-equipped for fishing with a spacious forward casting area that remains stable even when anglers stand on the bow. On the port side, an in-deck locker for the outboard motor is accessible, while the starboard side features racks capable of holding up to four 7-foot rods. The hatch on this locker operates on gas struts and includes a locking mechanism. Forward amenities include an anchor locker, a 12-volt power plug for a trolling motor, and a navigation light receptacle. A large locker aft of the bow compartments houses a battery tray for an optional trolling motor and offers additional gear storage with drainage and locking features. Vertical rod holders flank each side of the console, and the aft deck provides further fishing space with two additional rod holders. Stability is maintained throughout the deck, including the stern area. The 28-gallon livewell is painted blue, illuminated, and equipped with a gas-strut hatch for convenient bait retrieval.

Helm and Seating

The helm features a tilt steering wheel and an accessory switch with illuminated activation. A flat foam pad provides a practical surface for tools, complemented by a 12-volt power plug and dual cup holders, one of which can be used for charging a mobile device. Storage access is provided via a panel at the base of the console, which also houses rigging and a fire extinguisher. The aluminum pipework surrounding the helm is robust, offering secure handholds for passengers during rough conditions and preventing contact with the acrylic windscreen. Seating includes a cushioned top on a 72-quart cooler positioned on the front side of the console, which is securely strapped in place. Passengers can comfortably rest their feet on the aluminum framework. The helm seat is versatile, featuring a folding footrest and an adjustable backrest that can be oriented forward or aft for driver comfort. The cooler within the helm seat doubles as a fish box or beverage chiller. Rear jump seats fold up to increase passenger capacity and latch closed when not in use. Buyers may select from six optional hull-side colors, including the new Victory Red introduced in 2016.

Conclusion

The Mako 19CPX Bayboat is thoughtfully designed to fulfill the needs of anglers and active families alike. Its combination of ample deck space, generous storage, solid performance, and flexible seating arrangements make it a well-rounded package for both fishing excursions and recreational outings. The boat's stability, maneuverability, and efficient powertrain further enhance its appeal as a capable and enjoyable vessel in an 18-foot, 10-inch footprint.
