Mainship 34

The Mainship Pilot 34 has the seakeeping abilities of the lobster boats it has descended from. It has a steep plumb bow and a gentle rise of the sheer; both of these qualities give the Pilot 34 the ability to cut through head seas, while the rounded forward hull sections provide a soft entry. Flatter sections aft increase lift for speed and economy, and the deep full keel with a complete sand shoe gives stability and protection from grounding. In the cockpit, the Pilot 34 has double-wide helm and companion seats flanking the large hydraulically-assisted engine access hatch. The side lounges can double as berths with the removable backrests. A tilt-up console means easy access to electronics and wiring, and there is a built-in insulated cooler box as well as a standard transom door. Below, the cabin has a large head complete with Corian covered vanity, lots of storage, a shower, and even a VacuFlush head. The teak-trimmed galley offers plenty of storage, ample Corian counter space, a microwave, a dual cooktop, and a refrigerator and freezer. There is even a slide-out pantry for convenience. The large dinette easily converts to a double berth and includes plenty of storage. A color TV - VCR is standard and is easily viewed from the private forward stateroom, galley or dinette on its swivel system. Forward in the stateroom, hanging lockers and drawers will swallow gear for the weekend or a month. Extra-long innerspring berths guarantee a great night's sleep.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

Pros

Versatile Design: The Mainship Pilot 34 features a classic trawler profile combined with a modern touch. Its versatile design makes it perfect for both day cruising and extended voyages.

Fuel Efficiency: Powered by a single diesel engine, this boat is known for its fuel efficiency, allowing for long-range cruising without breaking the bank.

Spacious Interior: The cabin space is designed for comfort, featuring a well-appointed salon, a full galley, and accommodating sleeping arrangements, making it suitable for weekend getaways or longer trips.

Stable Performance: With a solid hull design, the Mainship Pilot 34 offers a stable ride in various sea conditions, making it a reliable choice for both experienced and novice boaters.

Easy Handling: The single-engine setup and bow thruster options (on some models) provide ease of maneuverability, especially in tight docking situations, which is particularly advantageous for less experienced captains.

Excellent Visibility: The elevated helm position provides excellent visibility for navigation and helps enhance safety on the water.

Outdoor Spaces: The spacious cockpit and inviting aft deck offer great areas for entertaining or relaxing, combining comfort with outdoor living.

Cons

Limited Speed: While fuel-efficient, the Mainship Pilot 34 is not built for speed. It has a comfortable cruising speed, but those looking for quick passages may find it lacking.

Single Engine Dependency: Sole reliance on one engine can be a downside for some boaters, as any mechanical failure may significantly impact the vessel's operational capability.

Storage Constraints: While the interior is spacious, some owners may find storage to be limited for extended cruising, particularly for larger families or groups.

Older Technology: As a 2002 model, some may find the electronics and navigational systems to be outdated compared to more modern vessels, requiring potential upgrades for tech-savvy boaters.

Maintenance Costs: Although the diesel engine provides efficiency, routine maintenance and parts can be more costly compared to gasoline engines, especially if substantial work is needed.

Handling in Rough Seas: While stable, the boat's design may not handle extremely rough conditions as well as some larger trawlers, potentially limiting its use in inclement weather.
