Larson 28: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Larson 228 Wakeboard Edition is designed to offer boating families an affordable yet feature-rich option for full-day water fun and wakeboarding activities. It aims to deliver the feel of a tournament wakeboard boat without the associated high cost, incorporating key features such as the Perfect Pass speed control system, onboard heaters, and a stylish Roswell Wakeboard Tower. This model builds on Larson's popular runabout platform, enhancing it with sporty and practical elements tailored for water sports enthusiasts.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The boat features a spacious bow area with bench-style seating equipped with safety rails angled toward riders for comfort and security. A large walkthrough facilitates easy movement between the bow and cockpit, while seat bottoms lift effortlessly to reveal ample storage compartments below. The bow area can be converted into a comfortable sun pad with the addition of a filler cushion. A four-step boarding ladder at the front simplifies access to and from the water. The wide integrated swim platform at the stern includes a swim shower on the port side, an integrated cooler within the deck, and a three-step boarding ladder, enhancing convenience for swimmers and wakeboarders.

Cockpit and Helm Features

The cockpit offers generous space with numerous stainless steel beverage holders distributed throughout the deck. The helm is equipped with sporty swivel seats featuring bolsters for improved visibility and comfort underway. The dashboard presents a silver-accented design with black-faced instruments and a centrally located digital depth finder. To the right of the steering wheel, there is a 12-volt power connection and a Clarion stereo remote control panel. The steering wheel itself is padded and sporty, complementing the Perfect Pass Pro speed control system that maintains optimal speeds for creating ideal wakes and performing tricks. Additional conveniences include a companion pod with separate compartments for wallets and the Clarion AM/FM CD player, which comes with a one-year Sirius satellite service subscription.

Storage and Additional Amenities

Storage solutions are well thought out, with a large in-floor compartment capable of accommodating skis and other gear. A carry-on cooler is stowed beneath the stern bench, accompanied by a handy air pump for inflating water toys. The wide sun pad at the stern features a flip-out post that converts a walk-through into a comfortable headrest for sunbathers. This sun pad also lifts easily to provide access to the engine for pre-launch inspections. The optional wakeboard tower is a standout feature, offering space for two boards on each side and a double tow point at the top. The tested model also included an optional ski mirror.

Power and Performance

The Larson 228 LXI Wakeboard Edition weighs 3,495 pounds and measures 22 feet 6 inches in length overall with a beam of 8 feet 3 inches. Powered by a 300 horsepower MerCruiser 350 MAG engine, the boat demonstrated impressive performance during testing on a freshwater lake with three-quarters tank of fuel. It accelerated quickly, reaching planing speed in just 2.9 seconds and hitting 30 miles per hour in 6 seconds. The boat cruised comfortably at 2,500 RPM, maintaining a speed of 23.4 miles per hour, and achieved a top speed of 54.5 miles per hour. Handling was smooth and responsive, confirming the boat’s capability to support a variety of wakeboarding tricks and water sports activities.

Conclusion

The Larson 228 Wakeboard Edition successfully combines affordability with the features and performance expected from a dedicated wakeboard boat. Its thoughtful design, ample storage, and powerful engine make it a compelling choice for families and water sports enthusiasts seeking a versatile and fun vessel. The inclusion of advanced systems like Perfect Pass and onboard heaters further enhance its appeal, making it well worth a test drive for those interested in wakeboarding and recreational boating.
