Larson 18: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Larson FX-1850DC is a versatile dual console boat designed for multi-species fishing and family outings. It comes packaged with a trailer and fishing gear, including bait and livewells, making it a ready-to-launch option for anglers. The model we tested was powered by an Evinrude E-TEC G2 150HO outboard engine, although the boat can accommodate a single outboard up to 200 horsepower.
Power and Performance
Our test boat featured the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150HO paired with a 15.5 by 17 inch Rebel 3-blade stainless steel propeller and a 2.17 to 1 gear reduction. With two people aboard, half a tank of fuel, and test gear, the boat weighed approximately 3,469 pounds. The 150HO engine delivers about 165 horsepower at 5,900 RPM, enabling the FX-1850DC to reach a top speed of 44.1 miles per hour at that RPM. The optimal cruising speed was recorded at 23.8 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, where fuel consumption was 4.25 gallons per hour, translating to 5.59 miles per gallon and a range of 181 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with the boat planing in 2.3 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds. The hull features a 16-degree dead rise at the transom and an 8 foot 6 inch beam, with a notched running surface ahead of the motor for cleaner water flow to the propeller. The boat demonstrated responsive handling with smooth turns and arcs, aided by the Evinrude Dynamic Power Steering system, which allows adjustable steering assist. Additional features include digital shift and throttle controls and the I-Trim automatic trim system, which can be manually overridden.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The FX-1850DC's bow area is finished with a non-skid walking surface recessed below deck level. It includes an optional fish finder panel centrally located on the bow. Both port and starboard sides are equipped with stainless steel rails, pull-up cleats, expandable netting, speakers, stainless steel cup holders, and trolling motor controls on the port side. Storage is ample with four separate lockers in the bow, including a dedicated molded space for an 18-gallon livewell with a bracket for a 5-gallon bucket. Although there is no dedicated bow anchor locker, one of the forward lockers can be used for ground tackle. A socket for a movable fishing seat is positioned centrally on the deck. The full-height aluminum frame windshield features a walk-through center section and opens on gas struts, revealing storage for four 7-foot 6-inch rods and skis beneath a locking hatch. The boat comes standard with two movable fishing chairs and six socket locations for fishing seats, including one on the raised aft casting platform.
Helm and Cockpit Features
The helm station includes a deluxe seat with an air ride pedestal, folding armrests, and aft adjustment. The dashboard is dark-colored to reduce glare and features a padded tray for personal items. Standard equipment includes tilt steering, a remote stereo control, and key switches arranged for ergonomic access. The helm is dominated by the Evinrude Icon touchscreen display, flanked by accessory switches. The port console contains a glove box and an external drop-in storage pouch for small fenders. Both consoles offer additional storage in their bases, with grab handles and cup holders conveniently located outboard to port. The cockpit accommodates up to seven passengers or 1,750 pounds, with two fold-up seats in the stern. On the port side, there is a stainless steel grab rail, racks for four 8-foot rods, and a clip for the anchor light. Between the aft jump seats, the boat features an 18-gallon bait well with a light and timer on the port side and a 25-gallon, 50-inch-long livewell to starboard. When the jump seats are folded and the wells closed, the area forms a full-width raised platform suitable for fishing. The outboard well remains clean and uncluttered due to the E-TEC G2's internal steering mechanism.
Trailer and Additional Features
The FX-1850DC is supplied with a matching single-axle trailer that includes stainless steel diamond plate fenders, LED lighting, chrome rims, and a swing-away tongue for ease of transport and storage. Larson's partnership with Evinrude allows for custom color matching of the engine side panels to the boat's color scheme, as seen on the test model.
Conclusion
The Larson FX-1850DC presents an affordable and well-equipped package for families and anglers seeking a versatile fishing boat. Its combination of performance, thoughtful fishing amenities, and user-friendly features make it a practical choice for those looking to launch quickly and enjoy a day on the water. The boat's responsive handling, efficient powertrain, and ample storage contribute to its appeal as a multi-purpose dual console vessel.
