Key West CC: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Key West 244cc is the largest center console model in the Key West lineup, designed primarily for blue-water fishing while also accommodating family cruising and watersports. It features a stepped hull for enhanced speed and fuel efficiency, and is constructed with hand-laid fiberglass backed by a 10-year warranty. The boat's deep V hull has a variable deadrise, starting sharp at the bow and measuring 24 degrees at the transom, contributing to a dry and comfortable ride in choppy conditions.
Power and Performance
Our test boat was equipped with twin Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 HOL outboard engines, each featuring a 2.171 gear reduction and turning 15-inch by 20-inch RX-4 four-bladed stainless steel propellers. Testing took place on an 85-degree day at nearly 1,000 feet altitude in fresh water, with the boat loaded to approximately 5,046 pounds including two people, fuel, and gear. The 244cc achieved a top speed of 50.4 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM. Efficient cruising speeds were identified at 35 mph (4,000 RPM), burning 13.8 gallons per hour and yielding 2.53 miles per gallon, and at the best cruise speed of 24.9 mph (3,000 RPM), where fuel consumption dropped to 8.8 gallons per hour for 2.83 miles per gallon, providing a range of 357 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with the boat planing in 2.7 seconds, reaching 20 mph in 3.3 seconds and 30 mph in 4.9 seconds, accompanied by a 24-degree bow rise during hard acceleration. The E-TEC G2 engines feature digital shift and throttle for smooth operation, an iTrim automatic trim system that can be disabled for manual control, and integrated hydraulic steering housed in the midsection, reducing exposed components and improving reliability. The motors trim up to 81 degrees, allowing complete engine lift out of the water for protection when docked or moored in saltwater.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The 244cc's stern is thoughtfully arranged with five rod holders and a notably uncluttered splash well, thanks to the clean rigging tubes and internal steering of the E-TEC G2 engines. Swim platforms flank each side of the transom, with a port-side three-step reboarding ladder integrated into a lowered transom section for easy cockpit access. The cockpit itself features an optional fold-out bench seat, with an aft depth of 2 feet 2 inches and self-bailing drains located in each rear corner that discharge directly overboard through 1.5-inch through-hull fittings. On either side of the stern, 18-gallon live wells with clear hatches, rounded corners, blue interiors, and dedicated water systems provide ample live bait storage. The popular T-Top option, as seen on the test boat, includes securely deck-mounted support stanchions, life jacket storage, a radio box, spreader lights, and rocket launcher-style rod holders. The leaning post incorporates a cooler secured within its frame, which doubles as a foot brace for passengers seated aft. Additional optional features include a leaning post with four rocket launchers and side-by-side captain seats with fold-up bolsters.
Helm and Cockpit Features
The helm station is equipped with a tilt steering wheel and well-positioned trim tab controls located ahead of the digital shift and throttle levers. Accessory switches are clearly labeled, and the Evinrude icon touchscreen display is prominently placed for easy viewing. Additional amenities include a stereo remote control and USB and auxiliary input plugs located forward of the companion seat. The console is protected by an acrylic wraparound windscreen, with a compass mounted directly ahead of the steering wheel. Bolsters and recessed grab rails run along both sides of the cockpit for passenger comfort and safety. On the starboard gunwale, raw water hookups are accessible, and dedicated racks for rods and landing tackle are installed on each side. Battery switches are conveniently located on the starboard side of the helm console. A port-side console hatch opens to a compartment that can be optionally fitted with a porta-potty. The forward console seat folds away when not in use, and optional bow cushions enhance family-friendly comfort. The bow area includes backrests, recessed grab rails, and pull-up cleats on each side.
Storage and Fishing Amenities
Storage solutions are integrated throughout the boat to support fishing activities and general use. The bow features draining lockers beneath outboard hatches and an in-deck fishbox equipped with a macerator and overboard drainage. The foredeck is finished with non-skid surfaces and outfitted with an anchor roller, two pull-up cleats, an optional windlass, and an anchor locker with a rack designed for a Danforth-style anchor. These features, combined with the boat's size and ride quality, make the 244cc well-suited for offshore fishing excursions as well as family outings.
Conclusion
The Key West 244cc fulfills its promise as a fishing-first center console that also accommodates family cruising and watersports. Its combination of a sturdy, hand-laid fiberglass deep V hull, efficient twin Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 HOL engines, and thoughtful deck and cockpit design provide a versatile and capable platform. The boat's performance, handling, and range make it a comfortable and reliable choice for anglers seeking offshore capability without sacrificing family-friendly features.
