Overview
The Key West 239 DFS is a 23-foot 9-inch offshore fishing boat designed to deliver both performance and comfort for anglers and families alike. With a beam of 8 feet 6 inches, a draft of 1 foot 2 inches, and a 24-degree dead rise at the transom, this vessel balances stability and agility. Weighing approximately 3,500 pounds depending on power options and equipped with a 100-gallon fuel capacity, the 239 DFS is built to handle offshore conditions while providing ample space and features for fishing and leisure.
Fishing Features and Exterior Design
The Key West 239 DFS is thoughtfully outfitted to support serious fishing activities. The bait station, located just behind the helm seat, includes four rod holders integrated into the grab rail and a large 40-gallon live well with a latching, transparent hatch for easy monitoring. Tackle storage compartments are conveniently positioned on both sides beneath the helm seat. The aft cockpit offers 24 square feet of working space, with efficient drainage through dual scuppers. Side decks are a comfortable 19 inches wide, complemented by gunwales averaging 28 inches in height and padded combing panels for added comfort during work. Additional fishing conveniences include recessed trolling rod holders in the cap rail and storage for three rods inside each gunnel. A forward casting platform provides a secure area to manage the anchor, which stows neatly in its own locker. The hull features a stepped running surface with a sharp entry and wide chines, contributing to stability offshore. Two lifting strakes ahead of the single hull step further enhance the ride quality. At the stern, a beam-wide molded swim platform flanks a deep engine well, allowing for rapid and high trim angles up to 81 degrees, facilitated by a quick trim system.
Helm and Bridge Layout
The helm area is compact yet well-appointed, featuring a polished tilt steering wheel, Pinnacle mount, and digital shift and throttle controls that operate smoothly and are ergonomically positioned. The chart plotter sits directly in front of the pilot, accompanied by a bank of accessory switches. Engine gauges and stereo controls are located to starboard, with sufficient space for an additional flat-screen monitor. Below the helm is a small compartment suitable for extra storage or, optionally, a dayhead. The double-wide captain’s seat is upholstered with detailed craftsmanship and includes flip-up bolsters for both occupants. Overhead, a solid fiberglass T-top, finished to match the hull color, integrates storage compartments, courtesy lighting, floodlights, and four rocket launchers, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.
Power and Performance
Our test boat was powered by the Evinrude E-Tech G2 250, a fuel-injected V6 two-stroke engine known for its strong low-end torque and rapid acceleration. This engine features a customizable shroud painted to match the hull, adding to the boat’s visual appeal. During testing with two people aboard and just over half a tank of fuel, the 239 DFS reached an average top speed of 48.9 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM while consuming 21.1 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of approximately 208 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The most economical cruise speed was 26.5 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, burning 7.7 gallons per hour and extending the range to 310 miles. The boat demonstrated quick planing, achieving plane in 3.5 seconds and accelerating from zero to 30 miles per hour in five seconds. Handling was responsive and predictable even in rough, windy conditions, aided by advanced hydraulic steering from Evinrude.
Interior and Seating
The Key West 239 DFS offers comfortable seating arrangements that cater to both anglers and families. The bow features wraparound seating with bolster pads and full-length stainless steel handrails on both sides, providing safety and comfort. The two-tone upholstery enhances the visual appeal, complemented by removable seat backs and dual cup holders. Storage is ample, with hinged seat cushions revealing compartments below and an additional storage locker in the sole for inflatables or fenders. Midship, just forward of the center console, is a single wide seat considered the best vantage point aboard. The transom includes a full-beam bench seat designed for up to four adults, crafted with thick, comfortable materials. Below the bench are deep, self-draining storage compartments whose hatch covers double as raised casting platforms when seat cushions are removed.
Conclusion
The Key West 239 DFS is a well-rounded offshore fishing boat that combines solid performance, thoughtful fishing features, and comfortable accommodations. Its stable hull design, powerful and efficient Evinrude engine, and ergonomic helm layout make it a capable and enjoyable vessel for anglers and families. The attention to detail in both fishing amenities and seating comfort underscores its versatility, making it a compelling choice in the 23-foot offshore fishing category.
