Key West 20: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Key West 203 DFS is a versatile 20-foot, 3-inch dual-console boat designed for fishing, cruising, and water sports. Powered by the innovative 3-cylinder Evinrude E-Tech G2 150 outboard engine, this model combines efficient performance with practical features tailored to anglers and recreational boaters alike. The boat’s empty weight is 1,950 pounds, and during testing with two people, 50 gallons of fuel, and equipment aboard, the total weight reached approximately 2,765 pounds.

Power and Performance

The test boat was equipped with a single 3-cylinder Evinrude E-Tech G2 150 outboard engine paired with a 14.5 by 21 inch RX3 stainless steel propeller, one of two new propeller designs for this engine series. At full throttle, the engine reached 5,350 RPM, delivering a top speed of 49.9 miles per hour. The optimal cruising speed was recorded at 3,500 RPM, achieving 27.3 miles per hour with a fuel efficiency of 5 miles per gallon while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Remarkably, the boat demonstrated exceptional fuel economy at idle and trolling speeds, with 18 miles per gallon at 650 RPM idle and a consumption of only 0.4 gallons per hour at 5 miles per hour trolling speed. Acceleration was swift, with the boat planing in 3.6 seconds and reaching 20 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds. The hull features a modified V-bottom with 19 degrees of deadrise at the transom and a pronounced Carolina flair at the bow that effectively reduces spray. Handling was stable and predictable, enhanced by power steering integrated into the outboard, which provided effortless control.

Evinrude E-Tech G2 150 Outboard Engine

The Evinrude E-Tech G2 150 is a unique 1.9-liter two-stroke, three-cylinder outboard engine weighing 433 pounds. Its standout feature is direct fuel injection into the cylinder, a design exclusive in its class. At lower RPMs, the engine employs stratified combustion, delivering minimal fuel to the upper part of the cylinder, which results in outstanding fuel efficiency during idle and trolling. When higher power is required, the engine switches to homogeneous combustion, injecting more fuel and air into the larger cylinder section. The fuel injector operates at pressures up to 800 PSI, enabling precise fuel delivery. Additional features include an auto trim function and a redesigned lower unit with larger water pickups positioned lower and farther forward, allowing for higher mounting in shallow water conditions. Maintenance demands are minimal, with no break-in period, no frequent oil changes or filter replacements, and no annual dealer visits required. The first scheduled dealer service is at five years or 500 engine hours, supported by a comprehensive warranty including a five-year anti-corrosion guarantee.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

At the stern, the Key West 203 DFS features a three-step stainless steel boarding ladder to port and a storage locker to starboard. The aft freeboard measures 9.5 inches, and the swim ladder extends 22 inches below the waterline, conforming to ABYC standards. A 16-inch wide gate provides access to the cockpit, which has a depth of 25.5 inches. The cockpit seating includes a six-foot-wide bench across the stern that wraps around to a 4-foot, 4-inch starboard lounge. Four six-inch pull-up cleats are strategically placed around the boat. To port, a back-to-back seat folds out to create a 74-inch flat lounge suitable for an average adult to recline. Outboard racks on each side are equipped with bungees to secure long accessories. Storage compartments include a battery box in the aft port quarter, a blue-finished aerated live well beneath the center cushion with rounded corners, and additional open storage to port.

Helm and Console Features

The port console offers space for a portable head with 39 inches of vertical clearance and a 17-inch wide opening, topped by a 10-inch forward-to-aft hatch. The starboard helm seat swivels, adjusts fore and aft, and includes a flip-up bolster for comfort. The helm is equipped with an Evinrude multifunction display providing comprehensive engine data, complemented by an analog tachometer and a fuel level gauge. The steering wheel is mounted on a tilting C-Star hydraulic helm, and controls are conveniently located on the starboard gunwale. Additional features include accessory switches, a stereo remote, ignition key, and power and USB plugs arranged ergonomically around the helm.

Bow Area and Storage

Access to the bow is facilitated by a 20-inch wide opening in the center section of the windshield, with a 16-inch passage between the consoles. The bow seating is arranged for forward-facing travel with angled backrests on the front of each console. Stainless steel grab rails and speakers are integrated into the bow gunwales. Hinged bottom cushions provide access to storage compartments beneath. The foredeck includes an anchor locker with a notched hatch for the anchor rode to pass through. Inside, a cleat secures the rode, clips hold the anchor in place, and there is space to stow unused rode.

Conclusion

The Key West 203 DFS powered by the Evinrude E-Tech G2 150 outboard presents a well-rounded package for anglers and recreational boaters seeking a multi-purpose vessel. Its combination of efficient, low-maintenance power, thoughtful deck layout, and comfortable accommodations make it suitable for fishing, cruising, and water sports. The boat’s handling characteristics and fuel economy stand out, especially for those who spend significant time trolling. Overall, it offers a compelling option in the 20-foot dual-console category.
