Key Largo 18: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Key Largo 1800CC is a versatile 17-foot 10-inch center console boat designed to balance fishing capabilities with family-friendly features. With a beam of 7 feet 6 inches and an empty weight of 2200 pounds, it is easily transportable on its included trailer. The test boat was powered by a Mercury 115 horsepower four-stroke outboard engine, representing the latest in four-stroke technology, and equipped with a 13-inch diameter, 17 pitch, three-bladed aluminum propeller.

Power and Performance

During testing, the Key Largo 1800CC achieved a top speed of 37.7 miles per hour at 6000 RPM, consuming 11 gallons per hour, which translated to a range of 108 statute miles. At a more economical cruising speed of 19.2 miles per hour at 4000 RPM, fuel consumption dropped to 3.8 gallons per hour, extending the range to 159 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat accelerated comfortably, reaching planing speed in 4.1 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 16.6 seconds. Handling was generally smooth, with turns described as somewhat soft but manageable within approximately three boat lengths at cruising speed. The boat demonstrated competent performance in light chop and intermittent wind and rain conditions. Maneuverability at low speeds near docks was responsive and predictable. The vessel’s high freeboard of 28 inches midships and wide bow flare contribute to its ability to operate safely in coastal fishing environments and facilitate trailering.

Operational Features and Exterior Design

The Key Largo 1800CC offers practical operational features tailored to fishing and general boating needs. Battery access is conveniently located under the aft jump seat alongside the fuel filters, though the addition of a battery switch would be beneficial. The hinged seat hatches are constructed from durable King Starboard, with cushions secured by snaps. The transom measures 20 inches, with a 13-inch distance to the forward engine well bulkhead, allowing the Mercury engine to tilt fully out of the water. Engine controls provide precise incremental adjustments, and the stainless steel steering wheel is positioned at an optimal angle for both seated and standing operation. The ignition switch placement could be improved to avoid the knee strike zone, and while rocker switches include circuit breakers, a horn is notably absent. Storage is accessible through a hatch beneath the helm station. The cockpit is self-bailing via two 1-inch deck drains leading to the engine well and overboard, though larger drains would enhance drainage efficiency. At the bow, dual 6-inch cleats facilitate docking and anchoring, complemented by an anchor storage compartment integrated into the elevated bow deck, which includes molded recesses for anchor stock. Fishing amenities include eight rod holders distributed around the console and cap rails, under-gunnel rod storage on both sides, and a 13-inch deep stern storage compartment housing the raw water washdown pump. Electronics are limited to a Humminbird fish finder mounted atop the console panel, as flush mounting space is limited. The bow features an elevated casting platform with two compartments beneath: a 13-inch deep storage area forward and a 41-inch wide insulated, self-draining fish box aft, both designed to channel water efficiently to the stern drains. A live well is located under the seat just forward of the center console.

Interior and Comfort Features

The helm seat is reversible, allowing occupants to relax while monitoring fishing lines. Additional seating includes a cushioned bow area, which would benefit from a backrest cushion or a throwable flotation cushion for safety. A seat positioned ahead of the console offers a comfortable riding spot but could be improved with the addition of grab handles. The double-wide helm seat is set at a height accommodating captains of various sizes. Two cushioned seats are also located aft to port and starboard. For entertainment, the boat is equipped with a stereo system, although the protective cover somewhat limits access.

Conclusion

The Key Largo 1800CC presents itself as a solid entry-level center console boat that effectively combines fishing functionality with family-friendly features. Its manageable size, respectable performance, and thoughtful operational details make it a practical choice for those beginning their boating journey or seeking a versatile vessel at a reasonable price point.
