1959 Forest E. Johnson 24' Prowler "Marlin": One of One
Classic wooden runabout, restored and ready for the water. Designed and built by Forest E. Johnson, whose Prowlers drew rum runners, businessmen, movie stars, and racing enthusiasts. MARLIN is a 1959 Prowler 24, is built for the open ocean with her high bow, deep cockpit, and sturdy. She was built plank-on-frame, with cedar planking over sawn mahogany frames, a mahogany superstructure, and a teak-laid flush foredeck. She has an open cockpit and a small cuddy cabin.
In 2019 she completed an 18-month, top-to-bottom refit:
- Original hull sheathed in biaxial fiberglass and professionally faired
- Full rebuild of the 275-hp Chrysler gasoline engine, direct drive
- Upgraded electrical systems
- AwlCraft paint finish
- New custom swim platform
- Additional cockpit seating
- Marine head
Johnson opened his Coconut Grove boat works in 1921 and launched the first Prowler in 1948. His Prowlers became known for their high, sea-kindly bows and offshore racing pedigree. His customers and circle included Marilyn Monroe, Sam Snead, and Richard Nixon. He was also a friend of Don Aronow, who went on to found Formula, Donzi, Magnum and Cigarette. Another Prowler, the 1956 26-foot "Hank," took first place in the Concours d'Elegance at the Mystic Seaport Wooden Boat Show.
