Overview
The Jeanneau Leader 33 is the latest addition to the redesigned Leader Series, completing a lineup of five models ranging from 30 to 46 feet. This model reflects Jeanneau's efforts to appeal to both European and North American markets by combining contemporary design with practical features. The Leader 33 is a versatile cruiser designed to balance performance, comfort, and ease of handling.
Helm and Operational Features
The helm station is located on the starboard side and is thoughtfully arranged for operational efficiency. A center-mounted compass sits atop the console, with a row of analog gauges below, featuring twin tachometers with selectable display windows. A recessed area accommodates small electronics, supported by an accessory plug for charging. The main panel is finished in black acrylic and houses a 12-inch display flanked by illuminated rocker switches. The horn button is positioned centrally to the right, though it emits an electric tone rather than a traditional horn sound. Below, the console includes a drink holder, the Volvo Penta engine display, and joysticks for both the stern drive and bow thruster, conveniently placed for one-handed operation. Additional controls for the spotlight, trim tabs, and digital engine management are also integrated. The VHF radio is mounted in a less accessible position but can be repositioned easily. The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable, and engine start/stop buttons are located to the lower left. Visibility from the helm is excellent, thanks to a large single-piece windshield and an opening side window that provides ventilation. The helm seat is a single bucket style with swivel, slide, height adjustment, and a flip-up bolster, complemented by a flip-out footrest that enhances seated comfort.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
Access to the bow is available on the starboard side, where 30-inch high rails provide safety. The bow features a vertically mounted Lumar windlass with a recessed anchor roller holding a galvanized anchor secured by a safety cable and chain stopper integrated into the winch to relieve mechanical load. A hatch nearby offers road access to the anchor system. Twelve-inch cleats are positioned on both sides of the bow. The main control panel for the galley is located below deck, managing generator start and monitoring tank and battery levels. Battery switches are discreetly tucked under the stair riser leading below. Shore power connections are found on the port transom. Forward deck access includes the bow thruster compartment. The engine compartment is accessed via an electrically actuated hatch integrated into the aft seating area, revealing spacious installations for twin 220 horsepower Volvo Penta D3 engines. Alternative power options include twin 250 horsepower MerCruiser 4.5 gas engines or 300 horsepower 6.2 gas engines, both equipped with Bravo 3 outdrives and available with Axios joystick control. The generator is located just ahead of the fuel tank and accessible through a hatch beneath the salon table; if the generator option is not selected, this space serves as additional storage.
Power and Performance
During sea trials, the Leader 33 demonstrated responsive and precise handling, particularly with the joystick controls which exhibited no lag and intuitive response. The vessel measures 24 feet 5 inches in length overall, with a beam of 10 feet 10 inches and a draft of 3 feet 1 inch. The test weight, including full fuel and four people aboard, was approximately 12,809 pounds. Powered by twin 220 horsepower Volvo Penta D3 diesels with dual prop outdrives, the boat achieved a top speed of 34 miles per hour at 3,970 rpm. The most efficient cruising speed was 25.2 miles per hour at 3,250 rpm, consuming 16 gallons per hour, which translated to 1.6 miles per gallon and a range of 194 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 137-gallon capacity. The boat planes in 7.7 seconds, reaches 20 miles per hour in 11.3 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 23.4 seconds. The bow rises about 15 degrees during acceleration but does not obstruct forward visibility. Handling is agile with tight turning capability and a comfortable amount of slide. Offshore runs revealed only minor hull slap at full throttle, which was absent at cruising speeds. The Leader 33 carries a CE certification rating of B for offshore use with eight people aboard and C for coastal use with ten people aboard. Maneuvering in close quarters, including backing into slips, was precise and effortless.
