The Jeanneau 51 won European Yacht of the Year 2017 in the Family Cruiser category. It was the newest and smallest boat in the Jeanneau Yachts range when launched, with a hull by naval architect Philippe Briand and an interior by superyacht designer Andrew Winch. Construction is a hand laid solid glass hull, a resin infused balsa cored deck and a cast iron keel.
Cruising World's Mark Pillsbury wrote, "first and foremost, it's a couples boat," intended for owners ready to spend considerable time aboard, with guests joining them from time to time. Having also sailed the larger 54 and 58, he wrote that if he were spending his own money, "it would be on the 51."
Boats.com recorded 8.1 knots in 17 knots of breeze at 40 degrees apparent, with "only light fingertip control on the helm." Boating New Zealand saw a steady 10 to 10.5 knots on a close reach in a 20 to 25 knot westerly and reported no weather helm.
Two lounges sit under the dodger on either side of the companionway, and boats.com called them "the seats that everyone will fight over." The engine controls are high up on the console at the starboard wheel, so there is no need to bend over to shift when coming into a slip. Aft, the patented terrace boarding platform unfolds from the transom at the touch of a button, and the davits retract into the hull when the tender is down. Below, there is about seven feet of headroom, a full size forward facing nav station and a U shaped galley that gives the cook something to brace against on either tack.
A 630Ah lithium iron phosphate house bank was installed in 2025. Charging equipment includes solar panels, a hydrogenerator, a high performance alternator kit and two battery chargers. The AC system is 230V/50Hz with 230V outlets aboard; shore power details will follow.
