Jeanneau 40: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Jeanneau Leader 40 represents the newest flagship in Jeanneau's Leader line of cruisers. This model integrates innovative design features and thoughtful use of space, aiming to enhance both comfort and functionality for cruising enthusiasts. The boat is available in two configurations: a hardtop version with an opening GRP sunroof and an open version featuring an arch and bimini.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The Leader 40 features a full beam swim platform extending four feet three inches, equipped with a sturdy reboarding ladder that includes teak treads for durability and style. An optional gangway extends from the platform to the cockpit without compromising storage space when stowed. The sun pad area includes a convertible seat back that can be adjusted to form a chaise lounge or laid flat. Adjacent to this, the dinette table expands to create an open-air dining area, enhancing social and dining experiences on deck. The cockpit galley is conveniently located nearby and offers a sink, an optional refrigerator, and the possibility of installing an electric stove.

Helm and Navigation

At the helm, Jeanneau has installed a 14-inch Simrad Hybrid Touch display, complemented by digital ignition controls and an EVC display positioned to the left. The helm panel is finished in white, which may cause glare under bright sunlight. The helm area benefits from extensive glass surfaces and includes defrosters to maintain visibility. The helm station is equipped with Volvo Penta's stern drive joystick for precise maneuvering, and a side window that opens for ventilation and communication.

Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, the galley is designed for convenience and efficiency. It features removable solid surface counter pieces that have dedicated storage spaces, along with easily accessible cutlery compartments. Additional storage is provided by three removable bins beneath the deck. The galley includes a recessed sink, a two-burner gas stove as standard (with an electric option available), and a refrigerator positioned below the counter. A notable feature is the enclosed plate drying area adjacent to the sink and dedicated wine storage that accommodates stemware. Opposite the galley, the dinette table swivels to facilitate easy access and lowers to form an additional berth, demonstrating well-executed fit and finish with materials chosen for durability, comfort, and aesthetic appeal.

Private Accommodations

The forward stateroom boasts a large island berth with hull-side windows and an overhead hatch, providing natural light and ventilation. The berth is extendable, with the insert cushion stored conveniently beneath it. This stateroom also includes a private entrance to the head. The aft stateroom is configured with twin berths that convert into a queen-size bed using filler panels stored under the mattress and repositioned cushions. One berth doubles as a sofa, complemented by an additional settee to port that can serve as a third berth if needed. Storage compartments are located above, and a small table provides a private workspace. A sink in this area allows occupants to freshen up without needing to access the forward head.

Performance and Handling

During sea trials conducted off the south coast of France in choppy conditions, the Leader 40 demonstrated commendable performance and handling. The vessel achieved a top speed of 42.5 miles per hour, with an optimal cruising speed of 28.5 miles per hour. Fuel consumption was measured at 20.8 gallons per hour, yielding a range of approximately 237 statute miles. The boat handled well in various sea states, maintaining a comfortable ride in following seas with the bow held high and an even keel in beam seas. While some pounding and spray were experienced, typical for cruisers of this class, the Leader 40 allowed for the identification of a sweet spot in handling that minimized discomfort. The windshield wipers effectively maintained visibility in spray conditions. The stern drive joystick performed flawlessly, enhancing maneuverability during docking and low-speed operations.

Conclusion

The Jeanneau Leader 40 impresses with its clever spatial design, quality craftsmanship, and solid performance characteristics. Its innovative features, such as the versatile seating arrangements, extendable berths, and well-appointed galley, contribute to a comfortable cruising experience. The boat’s handling in challenging sea conditions confirms its capability as a reliable cruiser. Offered in both hardtop and open configurations, the Leader 40 provides options to suit different preferences, making it a noteworthy addition to the mid-sized cruiser market.
