The Biggest Pros and Cons
The 1999 Island Packet 350 is a well-regarded cruising sailboat known for its solid construction and comfortable accommodations. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:
Pros
Sturdy Build Quality: Island Packet yachts are renowned for their heavy-duty, solid fiberglass construction, providing excellent durability and a sense of safety offshore.
Comfortable Interior: The 350 features a spacious and well-designed interior layout with high-quality woodwork, ample storage, and comfortable sleeping quarters, making it ideal for extended cruising.
Full Keel with Skeg-Hung Rudder: This design offers excellent directional stability and protection for the rudder, contributing to the boat’s reputation as a capable cruiser.
Good Sailing Performance for a Cruiser: While not a racing boat, the 350 balances comfort and performance well, offering manageable handling and steady progress under sail.
Generous Tankage: Ample freshwater and fuel capacities support longer passages without frequent resupply.
Traditional Aesthetic: Classic lines and a traditional design appeal to sailors who appreciate timeless styling.
Cons
Heavier Displacement: The solid build and full keel make the boat relatively heavy, which can result in slower speeds compared to lighter, more performance-oriented cruisers.
Draft Limitations: The 5-foot draft may limit access to very shallow anchorages or certain coastal cruising areas.
Less Maneuverable in Tight Spaces: Due to the full keel and heavier displacement, the boat can be less nimble in marinas and tight docking situations.
Older Systems: Being a 1999 model, some onboard systems and equipment may require updating or maintenance depending on the boat’s care over the years.
Limited Downwind Sail Plan: The standard sail inventory may not include advanced downwind sails, which could affect performance in certain conditions unless upgraded.
