Vessel Details
Scrimshaw is a sturdy raised pilothouse trawler intended for those who take their cruising seriously. She's built on a semi-displacement hull with moderate beam, hard aft chines to reduce roll, and a long prop protecting keel.
Hull number 5 from the legendary Cherubini boat company, Scrimshaw's owners were closely involved in her construction and initiated improvements subsequently available on later models. Originally imported by Hans Christian as the Positive 42, US construction began in 1996 with hull #19 as the 45a in New Jersey.
With no long range cruising in their plans, Scrimshaw's owners have reluctantly decided to scale down.
Main Salon
Particularly spacious, the 45a's saloon is beamier than most trawlers. The large windows provide plenty of light and three windows open for ventilation. Entry into the saloon from the cockpit is through a Diamond Sea Glaze watertight, Dutch door. To port is an L-shaped lounge/dinette that can comfortably seat 6 with the addition of two-barrel seats. The cantilevered dining table was custom designed to fold-up, swivel and provide easy access to seating. To starboard are two built-in seats separated by a custom cabinet with plenty of storage. Standard equipment on the Cherubini 45a was a single unit washer/dryer, however Scrimshaw's owners, knowledgeable in long distance cruising chose to have a separate washer and dryer installed which is forward and to starboard. The saloon sole is teak and holly, the windows feature blinds and the ceiling is done in a traditional Herreshoff design.
Galley
The galley is located forward of the dinning area to port and features a large countertop suitable for self-serve meals. To keep down traffic in the refrigerator, the owners installed a custom in-counter cooler large enough to hold a case of drinks.

Master Stateroom
The master stateroom is forward and features a queen size inner spring mattress, cavernous under bed storage, a hanging cedar closet with a built-in blanket chest, television, AM/FM stereo, air-conditioning w/reverse cycle heat, and plenty of storage.
Unlike other Independence 45s, Scrimshaw features a custom designed head with a separate shower in the master, in lieu of a separate shower in the passageway, which was turned into a full size closet suitable to hang dresses and coats in. The master head is equipped with a Vaccu-flush head, solid surface counter tops, medicine cabinet, and a hidden safe.
Guest Stateroom
The guest stateroom is to port and features a custom writing/computer desk with keyboard tray and power strip, two single berths, two opening ports, three fans, 12V lighting and a sliding privacy door.
Head
The day/guest head is located amidships and to starboard and outfitted with a shower, Vaccu-flush head, medicine chest, three opening ports lights, solid surface counter tops, tiled sole, plenty of storage and a 120V outlet.
Deck Details
Having Scrimshaw semi-custom built allowed Scrimshaws owners to incorporate another feature that enables her to standout from the rest. Forward of the pilothouse, a built-in settee allows the crew and friends to ride the bow.
The pulpit is equipped with two anchors, a 45 lb. CQR and a 44 lb. Bruce, each one with 200' of 3/8" BBB chain and 150' of 5/8" nylon line. The anchor windlass is a Lighthouse and features a handheld remote. The bow is equipped with both fresh and saltwater wash down.
The upper deck is equipped with a 1000 lb. capacity Nick Jackson davit and a tender cradle. The mast effortlessly lowers single-handedly and features a radar reflector and spreader lights. The deck is surrounded by aluminum and feature port and starboard molded steps to the pilothouse and bow.
Cockpit
Scrimshaw's cockpit has teak decking, engine and rudder controls, a transom door to a teak swim platform, hot and cold fresh water shower, freshwater wash down, aluminum ladder to upper deck, shore power connections (50/30 amp) with Glendinning retriever, enormous lazarette, and propane storage.
Eelectronics - Pilothouse
This well thought-out pilothouse features a settee that converts to a 3/4 berth and a table to keep the crew in the action. Accessed by two sliding Sea Glaze doors with opening windows, this bridge is spacious with easy views.
