Pros
Robust Build Quality: Hylas yachts are known for their solid construction and use of high-quality materials, ensuring durability and safety for offshore cruising.
Spacious Interior: The center cockpit design offers a roomy and comfortable living space that is ideal for long voyages, featuring a well-appointed galley, generous storage, and multiple sleeping quarters.
Good Sailing Performance: With a well-balanced hull and effective sail plan, the Hylas 44 offers good performance under various wind conditions, making it a reliable choice for both novice and experienced sailors.
Safe Cockpit Design: The raised center cockpit provides excellent visibility while sailing and keeps the helmsperson secure, with less exposure to the elements compared to aft-cockpit designs.
Versatile Layout: The layout can often be customized to suit the needs of different owners, with both two and three cabin configurations available, allowing for flexibility in use and accommodation.
Strong Community and Support: Owners of Hylas yachts often benefit from a supportive community with access to resources, forums, and advice for maintenance and upgrades.
Cons
Age-Related Maintenance: As a 1988 model, potential buyers should be aware that age may bring about maintenance needs or upgrades. Finding specific parts or matching the condition of older systems may present challenges.
Limited Speed: While the Hylas 44 performs well in many conditions, it may not be as fast as some more modern designs that utilize lighter materials or advanced technology.
Potentially Higher Upkeep Costs: Older vessels can require more substantial upkeep and refurbishment, especially if they have not been maintained meticulously over the years.
Less Modern Amenities: Some features and systems may be dated compared to newer yachts, which can mean additional retrofitting or upgrading to bring the boat up to modern standards.
Draft and Beam: With a moderate draft, the Hylas 44 may limit access to shallower harbors and anchorages compared to shallower-drafted vessels. The beam may also affect maneuverability in tight spaces. ### Conclusion The 1988 Hylas Custom Center Cockpit 44 is an appealing choice for serious cruisers seeking a combination of style, comfort, and solid performance. However, prospective buyers should consider the age-related factors and potential needs for upgrades or maintenance as part of their decision-making process.
