Overview

46' Hylas — Comprehensive Professional Refit & Offshore Cruising Capability

This 46-foot Hylas is an exceptionally well-equipped offshore cruising yacht combining proven Hylas design with a comprehensive professional refit completed primarily in 2018. The vessel received major upgrades to propulsion, generation, electrical systems, energy storage, refrigeration, navigation, freshwater production, lighting, and ground tackle.

The result is a sophisticated cruising platform designed for extended time aboard, with an emphasis on energy independence, redundancy, reliability, and offshore capability.

Hull & Design

The yacht features a proven offshore configuration with a deep external lead ballast fin keel with bulb and spade rudder, providing excellent directional stability and sailing performance.

  • Hull: Molded fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) with cored construction
  • Finish: Awlgrip-painted hull, reported in very good/like-new condition for the vessel's age where visible
  • Frames: Fiberglass liner and transverse plywood bulkheads tabbed to the hull
  • Deck: Molded non-skid fiberglass with 3/8" balsa core and gelcoat
  • Hull/Deck Joint: Inside flange, through-bolted construction with slotted aluminum toe rail and rub rail
  • Keel: External lead ballast deep fin keel with bulb
  • Rudder: Spade rudder

The hull's gelcoat was painted with Awlgrip, and the finish is reported to be in excellent condition for the age of the vessel, with a recent paint job providing a clean, well-maintained appearance.

Offshore Layout & Interior

The interior is a semi-custom offshore-capable, center-cockpit layout configured as a cutter-rigged sloop with two private cabins and two heads.

The arrangement provides an excellent balance between comfortable living aboard and practical offshore functionality:

  • Center cockpit
  • Cutter-rigged sloop configuration
  • Two-cabin layout
  • Two-head interior
  • Walk-through galley to starboard
  • Navigation station to port at the base of the companionway
  • Large cockpit with pedestal wheel steering
  • Dodger and bimini
  • Teak trim
  • Teak-and-holly sole
  • Corian surfaces
  • Fiberglass and vinyl headliner

The center-cockpit configuration provides separation between the living spaces and the cockpit while maintaining excellent access to the vessel's navigation and operational systems.

Professional Dual-Voltage Electrical System

One of the yacht's most significant upgrades is its dual-voltage 12V/24V DC electrical architecture, which was substantially modernized during the professional refit.

The system utilizes eight batteries divided into five dedicated banks, providing separation between propulsion, house, generator, and bow-thruster loads.

Battery Banks

  • 24V Bow Thruster Bank: Two AGM Group 31 batteries
  • 24V House Bank: Two lithium-ion batteries
  • 12V House Bank: Two AGM golf-cart batteries
  • 12V Generator Bank: One Group 24 AGM battery
  • 12V Engine Start Bank: One Group 27 AGM battery

This arrangement provides substantial electrical capacity while maintaining dedicated starting and high-load banks.

Charging & Power Management

The primary 24V charging system is supported by a 180-amp high-output alternator driven by the main engine, together with the Victron 5,000W inverter/charger, which incorporates a 200-amp multi-stage charging capability.

The electrical architecture also incorporates dedicated DC-to-DC charging:

  • Sterling 40A charger maintains the 24V bow-thruster bank
  • Sterling 60A charger maintains the 12V house bank
  • Both are supplied from the primary 24V lithium house bank

The engine-start battery is maintained through a Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR) from the 12V house bank. The generator battery remains independent and is equipped with an emergency parallel switch to the engine-start battery.

This architecture provides multiple layers of charging capability and electrical redundancy.

Solar Power

The vessel is equipped with four solar panels and new solar controllers/regulators.

The solar system was reported to be functional prior to the vessel being disconnected for winter layup. The panels and controllers are currently disconnected for winter storage and should be recommissioned and tested by the new owner.

AC Electrical System — 240V/50A

The AC electrical system underwent a major modernization during the 2018 refit, converting the original 125V/50A system to 240V/50A service.

The installation was performed by an ABYC-certified electrician, and the majority of the AC wiring was replaced.

Victron 5,000W inverter/charger serves as the central power-management hub and automatic transfer system between shore power, generator power, and battery power.

The system incorporates a soft-start function, using the DC house batteries to assist with starting heavy AC loads.

Major features include:

  • 240V/50A shore-power inlet
  • Victron 5,000W inverter/charger
  • Lithium-ion energy storage
  • Soft-start capability
  • Galvanic protection
  • Overcurrent protection at inlets and distribution points
  • Modern outlets with integrated USB charging
  • Substantially renewed AC wiring
  • AC circuits, including air conditioning, routed through the inverter
  • Freshwater heater and one dedicated outlet wired independently of the inverter

The integration of lithium-ion storage, high-output inversion, solar charging, and 240V shore power represents a high-standard professional electrical installation and is one of the vessel's standout features.

DC Lighting & Refrigeration

All DC lighting throughout the vessel has been upgraded to LED, including the engine compartment, lazarette, lockers, and living spaces.

Refrigeration has been upgraded to a 24V air-cooled cold-plate system by Cold Eh, making efficient use of the modern 24V electrical architecture.

Navigation & Electronics

The yacht is equipped with a comprehensive navigation and communications package, including:

  • Garmin 7608 multifunction GPS/display
  • Garmin 7612 multifunction display
  • Icom IC-M504 VHF radio
  • Raymarine ST60 depth
  • Raymarine ST60 knot/log
  • Raymarine i60 wind instrumentation
  • Simrad autopilot

The electronics package is complemented by pedestal-mounted instruments and modern navigation equipment positioned for easy access from the cockpit.

Mechanical SystemsMain Engine

  • Yanmar 4JH80
  • 4-cylinder diesel inboard
  • 80 HP @ 3,200 RPM
  • Serial No. E52204
  • Approximately 231.2 hours

Generator

  • Northern Lights 6 kW
  • Model M673L3.3
  • Serial No. 6732-54792
  • Approximately 50 hours

Both the engine and generator are part of the vessel's major mechanical modernization and have very low reported operating hours.

Freshwater & Cruising Systems

Spectra 200T 24VDC watermaker is installed beneath the aft berth and produces approximately 200 gallons per day.

The high-capacity watermaker, lithium-ion house bank, solar array, inverter/charger, and generator together create an exceptionally capable platform for extended cruising and time away from shore facilities.

Ground Tackle

The yacht carries substantial anchoring equipment, including:

  • 25 kg Rocna primary anchor
  • Two Fortress FX-37 anchors
  • 150' of 3/8" chain
  • 150' of 5/8" nylon
  • 120' of 3/4" nylon
  • Maxwell 24VDC electric windlass

The combination of a modern primary anchor, two Fortress secondary anchors, substantial chain and nylon rode, and a powerful 24V windlass provides a serious ground-tackle package for cruising.

A Remarkably Comprehensive Refit

The defining characteristic of this Hylas is the scope of its modernization. The 2018 work addressed the vessel's fundamental cruising infrastructure rather than simply cosmetic items.

The yacht combines a proven offshore hull and center-cockpit cutter-sloop configuration with:

  • New Yanmar 80 HP diesel
  • New/low-hour Northern Lights 6 kW generator
  • Dual-voltage 12V/24V electrical system
  • 24V lithium-ion house bank
