Hurricane Sundeck: BoatTEST Review
Overview
Hurricane specializes in producing deck boats that emphasize comfort, style, reliability, and performance. The 217 Sun Deck Outboard exemplifies these qualities, powered by Honda's 225 horsepower VTEC outboard engine. Combining the advantages of fiberglass runabouts with the stability and utility of pontoon boats, Hurricane has been refining this versatile design for over 30 years, integrating modern technology and innovative features into the latest Sun Deck 217 model.
Exterior Design and Deck Features
At the bow, the 217 Sun Deck features a platform with an aggressive grip surface to ensure secure footing, accompanied by an anchor locker designed for a Danforth-style anchor with ample line storage below. The bow also includes a three-step boarding ladder and beverage holders, with a built-in cooler conveniently located under the forward step to keep drinks cold. Seating at the bow offers plush cushions with low safety rails and generous storage underneath. The starboard side provides a dedicated entry point for dock boarding, complemented by a large in-floor storage compartment capable of accommodating skis, kneeboards, and other gear.
Interior Amenities and Helm Station
A notable family-friendly feature is the onboard changing room, which includes a lockable door for secure storage of valuables and is equipped with a vanity and faucet. The windshield is framed with powder-coated metal and topped with a stainless steel bar, featuring a large walk-through without a lower door, which may allow cool air to enter during morning hours. The helm station is spacious enough to house a standard carry-on cooler and benefits from well-gasketed doors to minimize noise. The double-wide helm seat includes a glove box for personal items. The helm layout combines analog gauges with wood accents and includes two cup holders. Steering is hydraulic, and the entertainment system consists of a Clarion AM/FM/CD stereo that is Sirius satellite ready.
Additional Features and Cockpit Layout
The boat incorporates a versatile entertainment center with a faucet-shower combination, a covered sink, and storage below. A snack table can be twisted and locked into place for convenient serving while at anchor. The swim shower is located near the walk-through transom, which is equipped with a three-step boarding ladder to facilitate easy re-entry from the water. The cockpit features an L-shaped rear bench seat designed to keep guests comfortably together. Optional equipment on the test boat included a wakeboard tower and an upgraded sound system, enhancing the boating and water sports experience.
Power and Performance
The 217 Sun Deck measures 20 feet 10 inches in length overall, with a beam of 8.5 feet and a draft of 14 inches. It carries up to 52 gallons of fuel. Its powerplant is Honda's BF225 four-stroke VTEC outboard engine, a high-performance and efficient unit sharing technology with Honda's automotive engines found in models like the Odyssey and Pilot. The engine features a two-stage air induction system that draws fresh air from the top and channels it through long intakes to a butterfly valve that opens at 4,000 RPM, optimizing air supply for both low and high speeds. A belt-driven 90-amp alternator ensures ample electrical charging capacity for onboard electronics. Performance testing on an inland lake revealed an economical cruising speed of 17.6 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM, providing a range of approximately 158 miles. The top speed reached 46.7 miles per hour at 5,200 RPM. The boat planes in 4.4 seconds and accelerates to 30 miles per hour in 7.9 seconds, demonstrating sufficient power for activities such as wakeboarding.
Conclusion
The Hurricane 217 Sun Deck Outboard, equipped with Honda's 225 horsepower four-stroke VTEC engine, delivers a well-rounded package of versatility, comfort, and performance. Its thoughtful design features and solid powertrain make it suitable for family outings and water sports alike.
