Hatteras 63: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Hatteras GT63 EFB is a versatile yacht designed to excel in both offshore big game fishing and long-distance coastal cruising. It combines the rugged capabilities of a serious battle wagon capable of landing large fish with the comfort and amenities of a motor yacht that can entertain guests and accommodate up to eight people on extended voyages. The model is available in two configurations: an enclosed flying bridge, which is the focus of this review, and an open flying bridge version. Below decks, both configurations share the same layout.

Exterior Design and Enclosed Flying Bridge

The enclosed flying bridge on the Hatteras GT63 is accessible either via a ladder in the cockpit or an optional spiral staircase from the salon, with the latter providing safer passage in rough seas by connecting two protected areas. The yacht features a 20-foot beam, the widest in its class, which enhances space and comfort throughout. On the flying bridge, this width allows seating for five people facing forward, including two companion seats flanking the skipper’s chair, each equipped with footrests and chart kit drawers. The instrument panel is positioned low to maintain clear forward visibility for everyone on the bridge. A notable feature is the aft L-shaped settee, elevated to provide unobstructed views, and a granite dry bar with a refrigerator and ice maker to starboard, transforming the area into a comfortable sky lounge.

Interior Living Spaces

The main deck salon benefits from the yacht’s generous 20-foot beam, making it the largest in its class with a headroom of 6 feet 9 inches. Entry from the cockpit is facilitated by an automatic sliding door. Inside, a plush L-shaped leather sofa faces a cocktail table with storage, complemented by an entertainment center to starboard. The salon features indirect lighting and air conditioning vents discreetly integrated above the valances, adding a refined ambiance. The galley is spacious and well-appointed, equipped with a four-burner stove set into a granite countertop, a microwave, and multiple refrigerators and freezers housed in drawers beneath the counters. The cabinetry is customizable, as demonstrated by the owner’s choice of raised wood finishes. A central island serves as both a workspace and a bar for casual dining or entertaining. Adjacent to the galley, a large deep settee comfortably seats four guests.

Private Accommodations

Below deck, the four-stateroom layout maximizes the yacht’s beam to provide spacious and private quarters. The master stateroom, located to starboard, features a queen-sized bed flanked by end tables and a large chest of drawers, with optional wainscoting adding warmth to the space. Its en suite head includes a large separate shower. Forward in the bow is the VIP stateroom, also with a queen bed and a sizable head with a separate shower. Two guest staterooms are situated to port; these cabins are notably roomy for their class, with the aft guest stateroom offering a pullman bunk to increase flexibility for single occupants. The passageway between these accommodations includes the guest head, closets, and a compartment for a separate washer and dryer, ensuring privacy and convenience for all guests.

Cockpit and Fishing Features

The cockpit is purpose-built for offshore big game fishing, featuring a large transom door and two 60-inch fish boxes integrated into the sole. A live well in the transom is both aerated and macerated to maintain bait vitality. The starboard side hosts a bait prep console with ample tackle drawers and a removable cutting board, while dedicated storage under the gunnels accommodates essential fishing tools such as gaffs and boat hooks. Covering 173 square feet, the cockpit reflects Hatteras’s 62 years of experience in fishing boat design. For those prioritizing cruising over fishing, the cockpit’s generous space serves well for social gatherings, sunbathing, snorkeling, scuba diving staging, or as a safe area for children to fish while adults relax in mezzanine seating.

Conclusion

The Hatteras GT63 Enclosed Flybridge is a thoughtfully designed yacht that successfully balances the demands of offshore big game fishing with the comforts required for extended cruising. Its wide beam enhances space and livability throughout, from the flying bridge to the private staterooms below deck. Customization options allow owners to tailor the yacht to their specific needs, whether focused on fishing or entertaining. Overall, the GT63 EFB stands out as a capable and comfortable vessel for serious anglers and cruising enthusiasts alike.
