Overview
The Hatteras GT54 is designed as a versatile vessel that combines uncompromising sport fishing capabilities with comfortable cruising features. This walkthrough highlights the boat's thoughtful design elements and functional spaces, emphasizing both its fishing utility and cruising comfort.
Cockpit and Exterior Features
The cockpit offers 138 square feet of open space optimized for fishing activities. It includes two in-deck fish boxes, each providing nearly 20 cubic feet of storage. Innovative scuppers drain water from the cockpit sides into aft quarter fenders outside the hull, preventing unsightly black streaks on the topsides. The teak cap rails feature curved bullnose edges and are left unfinished for a natural appearance. Fishing amenities include two flush-mounted rod holders on either side of the cockpit and six additional holders aft of the flying bridge. A tuna door is located on the starboard side of the transom. Mezzanine seating is integrated with a freezer underneath, insulated storage compartments, a six-pack soda holder, tackle storage, and provisions for a sink.
Salon and Interior Living Spaces
Upon entering the main salon, the sliding pocket door is equipped with a lock to prevent it from closing in rough seas. The salon features traditionally styled windows with curved tops on both port and starboard sides, complemented by sculpted side windows integrated into the hull design. Climate control vents are discreetly positioned above the valances to ensure even cooling throughout the space. The port quarter houses an L-shaped sofa with storage beneath, accompanied by a traditional coffee table. The interior decor includes a single-piece whisper wall adorned with African mahogany battens finished in satin, a design motif that continues throughout the salon. On the starboard side, a 37-inch flat screen TV and the ship's electrical panel are conveniently located.
Galley
The galley is ingeniously designed to maximize functionality by transforming what is typically a dead-end alley into a practical island. This island includes convenient glass storage, additional cabinetry, and a granite countertop. The craftsmanship is evident in the use of metal tracks and dovetail joinery. The galley features four refrigerated drawers configurable as refrigerators or freezers, providing ample cold storage. Counter space totals four feet four inches combined with an additional two feet four inches adjacent to a single base stainless steel sink equipped with a pull-out sprayer and kink-resistant metal hose. Cooking appliances include a four-burner electric stove and a large convection microwave oven. Unique to this design are deep drawers integrated into the backsplash area, measuring two feet three inches by one foot three inches, with additional pull-out drawers above.
Accommodations
The master stateroom continues the salon's refined aesthetic with satin-finished African mahogany surrounding the headboard and side panels. Storage is abundant, including nine drawers, cedar-lined compartments beneath the berth, overhead cabinets, and a cedar closet with a full-length mirror. The master head is elegantly appointed with granite countertops, satin-finished African mahogany, and an antique and holly sole, featuring a walk-in shower. Forward of the companionway, the starboard stateroom offers generous headroom ranging from six feet five inches to seven feet one inch and includes a full-length bunk beneath the companionway stairs. This space can be configured with either a fixed or Pullman berth. Adjacent is a shared head that also serves as a day head. The VIP stateroom at the bow maintains an open feel with optional cabinetry to capitalize on the boat's Carolina flair. Behind the door, there is space for a stacked washer and dryer unit. Under-berth storage is deep and well-suited for sea bags.
Foredeck and Flying Bridge
The foredeck is expansive, measuring 17 feet by 12 feet, and can accommodate a 12-foot tender if desired. A davit installation is planned for the starboard side, though it reduces closet space in the VIP stateroom. While the boat does not come standard with a bow rail, the combing is prepped for easy installation of one. Safety enhancements such as a white powder-coated grab handle and a channel for hand-holding are present, though the reviewer suggests adding a bow rail and an additional black rail for improved security. The flying bridge is designed as a single, continuously molded piece that visually appears to be a separate bolted-on structure, reflecting a nod to traditional styling.
Conclusion
The Hatteras GT54 successfully integrates sport fishing functionality with cruising comfort through thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship. From its spacious cockpit and well-appointed interior to its clever galley layout and comfortable accommodations, the GT54 offers a versatile platform for both anglers and cruisers. The boat’s blend of traditional styling cues and modern amenities makes it a compelling choice in its class.
