Vessel Walkthrough
"PALO DURO" is hull no. 29 of the Grand Alaskan 60-64' Pilothouse Series. The 64' model has two additional feet in the main salon and aft deck/cockpit area, and two more feet in the engine room and lazarette than the 60' model. In addition, the upper flybridge deck was extended to create a larger flybridge and fully covered afterdeck area. The 64' Series pilothouse with the extended deck is the most popular model.


From the aft deck/cockpit there is access through a rear gate and down molded steps to a fully integrated swim platform with three stainless steel reverse U-shaped safety rails. By replacing the center safety rail into another set of holes, a hydraulically raised center section reveals a stainless steel folding swim ladder. Also accessed from this area is an exterior shower, storage to port, the Glendinning cablemaster shore power with 80' of cable, and telephone & TV cable hook-up. The chocks in this area were oversized from the standard 12' to 15" and the stainless safety handrail is upgraded to a larger size.


Also from the aft deck there are port and starboard gate doors for ease of entry, and the entire aft deck area was designed to create an additional living area that adjoins the salon through a double door entry. A built in seat with attractive like new sunbrella fabric with decorative pillows houses storage below and on both sides in cabinets as well as speakers for the yachts stereo system, and a high gloss varnished high low table can be used for dining or casual entertaining. As an added feature, there is a Glendinning remote control unit housed in a cabinet on the port side of the aft deck seat with throttle, transmission, and bow thruster, with 60' Feet of Cable for remote docking from virtually anywhere on the yacht. There are wing doors with upgraded stainless locking hardware and a complete eisenglass enclosure with screens as well as additional sunscreens to reduce heat and also offer privacy. A granite topped fiberglass cabinet houses a fridge icemaker and additional storage, fresh water wash down, additional ac inlet, and a stainless sink. Four additional folding chairs provide the opportunity for seating and dining. A Camera mounted discretely in this area allows for the opportunity to view approaching vessels from the stern when underway from either helm position. The optional hause cleats ahead of the gate doors allow the opportunity to run a spring forward and not interfere with the gate doors, and there are of course hause cleats aft of these gate doors for use with stern lines. Overhead lighting in this area was increased and also put on dimmer switches. A stainless steel handrail above the gate doors on the aft deck, make boarding in various tidal situations better. Underwater lighting was also recently installed.


Covered walkways and bulwarks that extend forward to adjoin the Portuguese Bridge offer protection and safety. Ahead of the Portuguese bridge is an area of seating, with storage, speaker system and built in fresh water washdown and forward on the bow, the optional dual hydraulic Capstan Maxwell windlass, with dual anchor roller and opening hatches to twin chain lockers, makes anchoring simple in all conditions. The stainless steel breast plate to protect the hull from any anchor damage was enlarged, and the twin length's of 300' of anchor chain is marked at 25' intervals. Either the Bruce or Delta Anchor is very effective. A salt water wash down pump in the starboard chain locker was recently replaced with a superior Headhunter pump. The heavy grade stainless steel stanchions with built in fender holders, are not mounted into the high gloss varnished toe rails, to allow for ease of maintenance. Four stainless steel fender holders were installed and attached to the forward stainless rails. Additional gate doors at the pilothouse provide another opportunity to board the yacht at a dock, which is higher than the gate doors on the aft deck, and an additional stainless ladder was designed specifically for those gates. Sail tracks were increased in length and additional cars for fenders were added to allow for quick positioning of fenders. A custom seven step tide-rise Marquipt boarding ladder is mounted on the outboard side of the starboard walkway, and an additional fixed step ladder for boarding at the pilothouse. Additional recently upgraded courtesy lighting forward on the foredeck and bow and overhead lighting in the walkways create an attractive look. Behind the forward bulwarks of the Portuguese Bridge there is storage in several cabinets and also controls for switching the Shore power use from forward to aft. This breaker panel was upgraded recently with an additional volt meter, and upgraded marine breakers.
Main Salon
The main salon is entered from the aft deck through double opening salon doors. To starboard, the custom entertainment center houses the 27" television/DVD at an angle that makes viewing possible from the adjoining galley and all areas of the salon, and also houses the Bose Stereo system, and supplies great storage. Just ahead are two comfortable chairs with a custom game tabletop with reversible Chess /Checkers and Backgammon built over an additional useful open storage cabinet which additionally holds all game pieces. Forward of this area also to starboard is an on deck head with opening window and beautiful custom hand crafted sink and granite counter. To port an L-shaped built in seating area was custom designed to be extremely comfortable, and a high low table with matching stools with storage below can also be used for comfortable dining or casual entertainment. Ahead of this seating area an additional custom bar cabinet was detailed to include an additional refrigerator and icemaker with liquor storage in the center, handcrafted custom sink and faucets, and above is an additional custom cabinet with glass storage. Designer touches include padded valances, curtains, teak blinds, custom light fixtures, upgraded fabrics, throw cushions, and much more. An overhead teak handrail is mounted above as well as the CO2 sensor unit and the four cube Bose speakers are positions in each corner of the salon. One of the telephone systems with landline, cellular, satellite and intercom is located to port. All interior overhead lighting is on dimmers with extra lighting that was detailed from the original blueprints. A Phantom Screen aft door was cleverly built in by the yard just ahead of the rear salon doors. Upgraded carpeting with sound insulation below additionally reduces sound from the engines below the salon. All door hardware is upgraded to a heavier stainless, and the headliner throughout the yacht was upgraded from the standard material. There is an additional 4-zone sound system for this yacht with separate systems for the Salon, Pilothouse, Flybridge and aft deck allowing different choices for each area at the same time.
Galley
The trash compacter and both of the dishwasher units are beautifully disguised with the use of teak paneling. In addition the control panel for the galley lighting and salon, which are on dimmers was recessed into the side of the galley counter. The forward galley counter has substantial storage in drawers and a GE four-burner cook top recessed into the granite counter, with GE convection microwave and substantial storage in cabinets and drawers below. A full size GE Refrigerator/freezer also has been covered with matching teak panels for an attractive unobtrusive appearance. After the initial commissioning of the yacht all of the galley cabinets were further customized for the dishes and glassware and for other contents to assure that they would not open even in particularly rough seas. Dishes and glassware will stay on board the yacht as part of its inventory. An additional water filtration system located in the galley further purifies the water sent to the icemakers and any freshwater outlets in the galley and wet bars. The entire floor area of the galley is finished in a teak and holly sole.
Pilothouse
Up three steps from the Galley and forward is a large Pilothouse. The seating is L-shaped with custom fabrics and upholstery design, and a number of additional throw pillows, and ahead of it a high low teak table with starburst design, is hinged to allow extra clearance when not in use, or a full dining table, or base for an additional berth. To port a half hanging locker for rain gear is built in, with additional chart or equipment storage aft, and overhead there is custom book and magazine storage built in on both sides. The amount of overhead lighting was increased and put on dimmers as well as the addition of indirect lighting on both port and starboard sides and above the seating behind teak valances. Two custom reading lights were also installed to be adjustable in position. The entire sole of the Pilothouse is teak and holly, and the seating has storage below to include a custom long gun locker, a drawer specifically set up for the fax machine, further storage lockers and even a chart locker. On the starboard side of the Pilothouse is a custom cabinet with storage for forty bottles of wine, and also under the console, and to starboard behind an opening cabinet door, is a refrigerated unit for wine with about a 20-bottle capacity. A tan colored electric Stidd helm chair with stainless steel base is mounted in a position so that it can be used both as a helm chair, or can be turned around to act as an additional chair when dining. Both Pilothouse doors have upgraded stainless steel handles and door lock systems, and additional safety dogs, and there are two overhead screened opening hatches to allow for airflow into the Pilothouse, instead of air conditioning. There are built in phantom screens on both the port and starboard pilothouse doors. The air conditioning for the Pilothouse was increased from standard to allow for faster cooling on even the hottest days. Both the 110/220 volt and 12/24 volt systems of the yacht are housed in panels in this area, including switchovers from either generator to shore power and separate optional complete generator gauges were added. When the console for the electronics was designed, it was slightly oversized to carry larger screens and the maximum amount of equipment. A teak handrail is mounted overhead, as well as a custom handrail just to port of the wheel above the chart drawers. Speakers are mounted overhead as well a CO2 sensor.

Master Stateroom
The Master Stateroom is accessed from a staircase on the starboard side opposite the galley. This layout provides additional privacy for the master, as well as the benefit of enlarging the galley area. In addition the custom staircase was designed and upgraded from the standard layout and creates the look similar to a spiral staircase with an attractive combination of stainless and teak. As you descend the four wide steps to the master there is storage to the right in two compartments. Behind the beautiful hand carved entrance door is a full height cedar lined hanging locker. The tapered king Berth with custom mattress has drawers built in which are cedar-lined and end tables with drawer storage. There is custom specified overhead lighting on dimmers with additional controls by the end tables, and there are custom fixtures on either side above the bed, which are centered in the custom framed mirrors. On the port side of the stateroom there is another full height hanging locker, and substantial additional storage in cabinets and drawer storage. Above this area are two opening ports, and decorator port coverings. A vanity with opening accordion door provides a great area of storage, and also custom cabinets, which reach to the headliner, were added above the vanity. A stool slips easily below the vanity when not in use. Attached to the vanity and opposite to end of the berth is a custom bookshelf. A Flat screen TV is installed in a custom teak cabinet, in the center of the wall opposite the end of the berth, and both the Television and DVD system in the master has surround sound. Below the flat screen in an opening teak door with upgraded locking system, which when not in use appears to be an additional locker, but when opened reveals an additional entrance to the Engine room through an additional watertight door with viewing port. The combination of these two doors lends results in a quieter environment in the master when cruising. The Telephone system is on the starboard side end table, and from the master and all the telephone locations, you can receive and make landline, cellular, satellite and intercom calls. An additional multi B & G display unit with depth, speed, and wind direction was installed in this area, and an alarm from the Northstar GPS, if there is excess movement at anchor, as well as the digital air conditioning controls. The master also has upgraded carpeting.
Master En-suite Head
The ensuite head has an opening pocket door, and teak and holly sole. There is a bidet forward and the vacuflush head aft. The granite counter was extended to have a larger surface area, and there is a mirrored storage cabinet, and additional cabinet above the counter and below. An opening port with curtain is above the sink and also a second opening stainless port is in the shower stall. The shower stall is large with built in seating, and lexan clear door.
Forward Guest Stateroom
The Forward guest staterooms are accessed from a staircase from the pilothouse. The optional curved wall at the base of this staircase gives the yacht a more detailed finish. The floor level of many previously built models had various levels in this area, however for safety, this forward area of the yacht is all on one level. In addition, the entrance to the port guest stateroom was enlarged with double doors, so there is a more open feeling. The port guest stateroom was an upper and lower berth, with storage below the lower berth, opening ports with curtains, custom nautical theme covers for the berths, decorator pillows, and double drawer storage, with mirror above. This was the first of this series to build in a TV/DVD and it also has its own satellite receiver, with cedar lined hanging locker below. There is a separate AC unit for this stateroom, complete telephone system, and the overhead lights are on dimmers. This stateroom is across from a large head and shower.
Forward VIP Stateroom
The forward VIP stateroom has a walkaround queen berth and custom mattress, bed coverings, pillow etc. Both the full height hanging locker to port, and the four large drawers under the berth are cedar lined. A teak framed mirror sits on the bulkhead forward, above the berth, and an additional teak framed mirror is attached on the inside of the entrance door to the stateroom. The phone system is on the port side near the head of the berth, reading lights, and there were upgrades to lighting, which are also on dimmers. A TV/DVD has its own satellite receiver. A large opening screened hatch provides both ventilation if opened, or natural light, and two stainless ports, with curtained window treatments to port and starboard, also these ports have additional stainless covers to close off light if desired. Headroom is exceptional. There is deep storage for luggage or golf clubs under this berth, and the mattress is hinged to allow easy access to this storage area. There is private access to the large head and shower, with granite counter, and large shower stall with built in additional storage cabinets. An opening port, with curtained window treatment provides ventilation and light, and there is additional cabinetry both above and below the granite counter for additional storage. The head has teak and holly soles and upgraded lighting.
Flybridge
The Flybridge is accessed from the inside staircase of the Pilothouse, and the custom stainless/teak stanchion and handrail as part of a spiral type staircase provides additional safety, although with only five wide steps, allows very easy access. To starboard is a custom fiberglass cabinet which includes a built in sink above with storage below, a refrigerator and icemaker combination, an additional storage cabinet, and then furthest aft a large stainless steel barbecue, with stainless safety rail with two propane tanks mounted below. Freshwater wash down is conveniently located at the aft base of this fiberglass cabinet, as are speakers for the sound system, and aft of this area is a mounted six man Offshore Switlock survival raft. A Stidd helm chair is mounted at centerline, and an L shaped seat behind and to port of it has an attractive sunbrella fabric, and individual hinged compartments for storage. To port of the Stidd chair is access to a very large storage area under the flybridge helm, and also a separate panel lifts to reveal an additional 110 volt, telephone & cable TV service. Two large molded in deck boxes are aft of the this seating and two fiberglass high low tables for entertaining or dining are located ahead of this seating. All areas of seating have covers, which has resulted in the seating having a like new appearance. The Bimini, which is connected to the main hinged arch provides an exceptionally large area of protection from sun or inclement weather. The upgraded and hinged secondary fiberglass radar arch can be lowered to provide clearance for Great Lakes voyages or other restricted height passages. As in all other areas of the yacht, the original courtesy lighting was ordered in increased numbers, and then upgraded in the last year to an improved more weatherproof stainless unit. There is lighting with separate controls under the main arch, and dual rectangular 500 watt, flood lights mounted high on the arch to illuminate the upper deck including the boat deck. The flybridge was extended by four feet, to cover the aft deck completely and of course create a larger area. As a result of this extension of the flybridge, the area aft of the built in deck boxes is large enough to enjoy for sun lounging or additional seating if required. The entire flybridge and boat deck area have drainage that goes to the waterline to prevent streaking. The boat deck has stainless stanchions and guidelines to provide a separate area, and the upgraded 1500 hydraulic Marquipt davit easily lifts and launches the 14' Rendova hard bottom inflatable with 50 hp four stroke Yamaha, with push button ease on the davit remote control. This tender also has a custom stainless arch which allows for easier boarding, and equipment such as optional lighting, VHF and depth sounder, and the custom cover for the dingy was designed to not impair vision aft from the fly bridge helm. There is a smaller console cover for the Rendova when the tender is being used more often.

Engine Room
There are two entrances to the engine room. Behind a teak door in the master is an aluminum water tight door with viewing window and safety dogs and the aft aluminum watertight door which leads to the Lazerette also has a viewing window and safety dogs for easy locking. Additional lighting both 24 volt and 110 volt were specified. All batteries were upgraded to AGM no maintenance, and special self-cleaning Groco strainer units were installed for the AC and generators. The fuel system had a capacity of 1300 gallons, and manifold system for fuel transfer including a transfer pump, and poplishing system that can operate and polish each fuel tank. An ESI fuel system, as well as the normal Racor fuel filter system for both engines and generators. The twin Northern Light 16KW generators had the latest updated sound shields not previously installed until this yacht. The freshwater pump originally installed was replaced by a much better Headhunter pump. The wiring and battery fusing systems were evaluated and improved for maximum safety. Recently the Naiad Multi Sea system was updated with nine square foot fins to provide even better stability. The 660 Cat 3196 Series had the latest upgrades when they were originally installed, and they currently are under extended transferable Caterpillar warranty, with approximately four years of warranty remaining. At extra cost, Twin Disc Transmissions were specified to allow for single engine operation if necessary without locking the shaft on the engine not in use. For ease or exit of any large machinery there are four overhead hatches, which can be opened in the salon floor. The floor above the engine room is over five inches in thickness with multiple sound insulation materials used. The Fireboy MA-1200 fire fighting system with engine and generator shutdown was installed. There is increased ventilation for the Engine room. The hydraulic reservoirs for the Stabilizers and bow thrusters are easily accessible as are the stabilizer fins, and the oil change system for the engines and generators is a simple to use system. The 4kw trace inverter is mounted ahead of the starboard engine. The deck plating used for flooring in the engine room has a rubberized non-slippery patterned surface, and the engines are mounted on stainless steel engine beds. Three camera locations offer alternate views of the engine room.
Lazarette
The Lazarette has a large opening hatch, which lifts with ease on hydraulic arms from the aft deck, or can be accessed from the aft end of the engine room. It is a large area, which serves services a number of pieces of equipment as well as provides useful storage. A short hinged staircase which can be moved out of the way easily, allows access from the aft deck to the full size GE Washer and Dryer Additional overhead lighting and 110 volt outlets were specified. To port there is the NuTone central Vacuum system, and a sophisticated fresh water filter system is set up to both soften the water, and also filter it before it reaches the water tanks. The aft part of this area provides easy access to the steering gear of the yacht. To port the 1500 gallon per day Filtration Concepts watermaker with the latest technology and self flushing is installed as well as twin isolation transformers to supply appropriate voltage and protection for the shower power system. An additional set of propellers are also mounted on a special bracket in this area as well this is the location for the second stainless steel water heater.
