Grady-White Freedom 235: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Grady White Freedom 235 Dual Console is a versatile, family-oriented boat designed for both coastal and offshore fishing. This multi-purpose vessel combines comfort and functionality, making it suitable for a variety of recreational activities. Its design emphasizes spaciousness and user-friendly features, appealing to families and anglers alike.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

The bow area features a bow rider configuration with side-by-side reclined seats. Beneath the starboard seat is an 89-quart insulated self-draining storage locker, while the port side offers a dry storage locker. The anchor locker is located under the forward seat, and the entire bow can be converted into a sun pad with an insert or fitted with an optional table for dining or cocktails. Bolster cushioning surrounds the bow area, complemented by stainless steel grab rails along its length. The test model included an optional anchor roller and windlass. The cockpit provides a lockable head compartment to port, accessible through a thoughtfully designed corner door with an overhead cut-out for easier entry. The head interior is enhanced with a teak and holly sole, vertical wood storage compartments, a wood-framed mirror with a medicine cabinet, and ambient dome and rope lighting. Additional storage is available behind the toilet and under the port seat. The port side companion seat is extra-wide with 5-inch thick foam cushions and storage beneath. An optional electromechanical adjustable seat extends into a chaise lounge, operated via a switch near the stereo system. The helm to starboard features an adjustable, pedestal-mounted captain's chair with high back, armrests, contoured multi-density foam, and diamond-patterned stitching, which matches the companion seat. The helm console accommodates dealer-installed electronics, including the standard Yamaha CommandLink Plus screen, Fusion stereo remote, and DC switches. Hydraulic trim tabs are standard, with controls conveniently located to the right of the adjustable steering wheel. Behind the helm seat, an optional wet bar with a sink and Yeti cooler offers convenience for entertaining. A standard 20-gallon freshwater tank supports the sink and cockpit shower. The cockpit depth measures 25 inches and can be outfitted with optional bolsters. The boat is rated to carry up to 10 passengers.

Fishing and Utility Features

The transom area includes a fold-away seat that reveals an optional 62-quart insulated, raw water-lit livewell with a full-column distribution inlet and overboard drain. To port, a 160-quart insulated fishbox doubles as a cooler. A retractable, spring-loaded ski pylon is mounted on the centerline as an option. The patented transom seat lifts to provide access to pumps and through-hole shutoff valves. A substantial transom door on the starboard side leads to an extended swim platform equipped with two launching points for water sports and a four-step swim ladder. The platform also contains two in-platform storage bins, one recommended for an auxiliary anchor. Tow rails in the cockpit enhance safety during offshore fishing, and four rod holders are integrated into the gunnels.

Power and Performance

The Freedom 235 measures 23 feet 7 inches in length overall with an 8 foot 6 inch beam. The boat's empty weight is 4,070 pounds. With full fuel capacity of 115 gallons, two passengers, test power, and gear, the estimated test weight was approximately 5,722 pounds. The test boat was equipped with an optional Yamaha F300 horsepower engine paired with a stainless steel 15-1.5 inch by 17 inch propeller. During testing, the boat achieved a top speed of 45 miles per hour at 5,900 rpm, consuming fuel at a rate of 26 gallons per hour, which provided a range of 176 miles. The most economical cruise speed was 30 mph at 4,000 rpm, burning 12.35 gallons per hour and yielding a range of 251 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The Freedom 235 reached planing speed in 4.2 seconds, accelerated to 20 mph in 6.1 seconds, and attained 30 mph in 9.4 seconds. Handling was nimble and stable, with tight turns executed offshore without cavitation, demonstrating solid performance and seaworthiness.

Conclusion

The Grady White Freedom 235 Dual Console delivers a well-rounded boating experience that balances family comfort with fishing capability. Its solid construction, thoughtful design, and array of features make it suitable for a range of activities from relaxed cruising to offshore fishing. The boat’s performance and stability reinforce its reputation as a dependable and enjoyable vessel for both marina and open water use.
