Overview

The Grady White Fisherman 236 is a versatile offshore fishing boat designed to accommodate both serious anglers and family-friendly cruising. It offers configurable seating arrangements and ample storage options, making it suitable for fishing excursions as well as leisure activities on the water.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The Fisherman 236 features a thoughtfully designed deck layout that caters to both fishing and comfort. The bow area can be outfitted with bolsters, cushions, and twin removable backrests to create a comfortable bow rider setup, with an optional filler cushion that converts the space into a large sun pad. Beneath the port and starboard seats are 89-quart insulated fish boxes with overboard drains, which can also serve as coolers for food and beverages. Forward on deck, a spacious anchor locker accommodates a Danforth-type anchor, complemented by two pop-up bow mooring cleats. The bow insert doubles as a large casting platform for anglers. A traditional forward-facing seat with insulated storage is positioned against the console. At the stern, a fold-away bench seat comfortably seats three and is backed by a cockpit with a consistent depth of 25 inches. The transom houses a 15.5-gallon insulated, lighted live well with a full-column distribution inlet and overboard drain, alongside a 160-quart insulated fish box that can double as a cooler. A retractable spring-loaded ski pole is centrally located between these features. The starboard transom door leads to extended swim platforms on either side of the outboard engine, providing ample space for water sports activities. Notably, the swim ladder includes four steps instead of the standard three, and two large storage compartments are integrated into the swim platforms, with the starboard compartment designed to hold an auxiliary anchor.

Console and T-Top Features

The test boat was equipped with an optional fiberglass T-top package that enhances functionality and aesthetics. This package includes an extended windshield, radio box, dome light, spreader light, four rod holders, a radar flat, and outrigger plates. The T-top frame is molded directly into the console, which conserves deck space and offers a cleaner appearance compared to conventional piping. The deluxe leaning post option features a backrest and lockable tackle storage, with four rod holders integrated into the seat back and a powder-coated white frame. The console itself houses a compass, DC switches, and space for two 12-inch flush-mounted dealer-installed navigation and radar displays. A Fusion Audio system is positioned below these, adjacent to the throttle controls. Trim tab controls are conveniently located beneath the steering wheel. The head compartment, accessed via a door on the starboard side, offers full headroom, LED lighting, an opening port light with screen, bulk storage, and a portable toilet.

Fishing Amenities

Fishing remains the primary focus of the Fisherman 236, with ample provisions for tackle and rod storage. The cockpit includes six rod racks and storage compartments, while standard tow rails in the aft cockpit provide secure footing when reeling in fish. The boat’s design and layout emphasize practical functionality for offshore anglers.

Power and Performance

The Fisherman 236 is powered by a standard single Yamaha F-250 horsepower outboard engine, with the test boat featuring the optional F-300 upgrade paired with a stainless steel 15-inch by 17-inch 1/2-inch propeller. The hull incorporates a CV-2 bottom shape designed by C. Raymond Hunt & Associates, known for pioneering the deep V-hull. This hull design includes a steep entry, four pronounced strakes for lift, and wide chine flats to reduce spray and enhance dryness. The Carolina bow flare deflects green water away from the topsides in rough conditions. With a 20-degree dead rise at the transom and extra-wide chine flats, the boat planes quickly and maintains stability. The Fisherman 236 measures 23 feet 7 inches in length on the centerline, excluding engine and swim platforms, with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches. Performance testing revealed a top speed of 48.5 mph at 5,700 rpm. The optimal cruise speed was 27 mph at 3,500 rpm, consuming 9.1 gallons per hour and providing a range of approximately 307 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat planes in 4.6 seconds, accelerates to 20 mph in 5.6 seconds, and reaches 30 mph in 9.4 seconds. Offshore handling was nimble and stable, with no cavitation during tight turns.
