Boattest.com Review
Overview
The Glastron GTS 225 is a sport boat closely related to the GT 225, differing primarily in cosmetic details such as hull graphics and colored gauges. It is designed as a versatile family watercraft with a focus on performance, handling, and comfortable accommodations. The boat is delivered on a custom trailer and offers a range of engine options from Mercury or Volvo Penta, with horsepower ratings between 220 and 320.
Exterior Design and Helm
The GTS 225 features distinctive reverse spear graphics and a colored band on the aft section of the topsides. The hull incorporates running strakes starting just aft of the bow and wide, flat chines that extend to the stern, where the hull exhibits a 20-degree dead rise. The helm console is fiberglass with yellow-faced gauges consistent with the S model, complemented by billet aluminum pull switches and an optional digital depth gauge. The steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base, and the helm and observer seats are bucket style with swivel, slide, and flip-up bolster functions. Forward of the helm is an anchor locker that is self-draining but lacks an anchor keeper. Six 6-inch pull-up cleats are distributed around the boat. The engine hatch is accessed by lifting the aft seat back, assisted by gas struts.
Power and Performance
Our test boat was equipped with a Volvo Penta VA 270 engine paired with an SX outdrive and a 14.5 by 19-inch propeller. The boat measures 22 feet in length overall, with an 8-foot 4-inch beam and a draft of 34 inches. Its empty weight is 3,350 pounds, with a test weight of approximately 3,950 pounds including fuel and two passengers. The GTS 225 achieved a top speed of 51.4 miles per hour at 5,000 RPM, consuming 20.6 gallons per hour and yielding a range of 90 miles. Optimal fuel economy was observed at 2,500 RPM and 19.8 miles per hour, burning 5.1 gallons per hour for a 140-mile range. Acceleration to planing speed occurred in 3.1 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 7.9 seconds. The boat exhibited minimal bow rise during acceleration, excellent visibility through the roadster-style windshield, and effective wind protection.
Handling Characteristics
The GTS 225 demonstrated superior handling, remaining dry and stable even when traversing wakes. It maintained a relatively level attitude during wave crossings with no pounding or spray affecting the windshield. Turning performance was notable for the absence of chine walk and prop ventilation. The boat rolls only 90 degrees into turns and stays well planted, providing a comfortable ride without tossing passengers outward. These traits make it well suited for family water sports, including towing skiers and tubes.
Accommodations and Cockpit Layout
The cockpit features U-shaped seating with quilted upholstery and color designs consistent throughout the boat. Behind the bench seating lies a large sun pad measuring 3 feet 1 inch deep by 6 feet 11 inches wide, with sides that can be raised to form a chaise lounge. A hidden backrest is located beneath the center cushion for aft-facing seating. For water sports activities, the boat includes a standard molded swim platform extending 19 inches, with an optional 21-inch extension that sits lower to facilitate boarding and preparation. The platform has a non-skid surface and a stereo remote control, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. The bow offers secure, deep seating for two passengers, with recessed cup holders integrated into the sides to keep beverages safely out of the way.
Conclusion
The Glastron GTS 225 combines sporty aesthetics with excellent handling and practical family accommodations. While it is priced slightly above its class, ranging from the low $40,000s to mid $50,000s depending on options, it remains competitive and includes a custom trailer. The GT version is available at a lower price point with fewer amenities. Overall, the GTS 225 is a well-rounded boat suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities.
