Glastron GTS 180: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Glastron GTS 180 is an entry-level, affordable bow rider that combines classic sport boat aesthetics with modern performance. Powered by the new Evinrude E-Tech G2 150HO outboard engine, this model offers a sporty appearance complemented by efficient and responsive handling, making it well-suited for recreational boating and water sports.

Power and Performance

During testing with two passengers aboard and approximately one-third tank of fuel, the GTS 180 weighed an estimated 2,514 pounds. It was equipped with a 15 1/4 by 19-inch three-blade stainless steel propeller paired with a 2.17:1 gear reduction. The top speed recorded was 47.6 miles per hour at 5,700 RPM. Optimal cruising speed was achieved at 3,000 RPM, where the boat maintained 21.2 miles per hour while consuming 3.65 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of approximately 125 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration tests showed the boat planed in 3.6 seconds, reached 20 mph in 4.4 seconds, and 30 mph in 6.3 seconds. The bow rose 20 degrees during hard acceleration without obstructing forward visibility, and once on plane, the boat maintained a 3-degree running angle, which is slightly better than average. Maneuverability was agile and precise, with smooth sweeping turns and no cavitation. The E-Tech G2 150HO features dynamic power steering with adjustable hydraulic resistance, allowing the driver to customize steering feel. Additionally, the engine includes an iTrim automatic trim system, beneficial for beginners but optional for experienced operators. The hull incorporates 20 degrees of dead rise at the transom, balancing speed capabilities with ride comfort.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The GTS 180 presents a clean and uncluttered outboard well, as the E-Tech G2 150HO's steering mechanism is integrated within the engine midsection, eliminating external steering arms or cables. All wiring and hoses are routed through Evinrude's clean rigging tube, maximizing usable space forward of the outboard. The boat is equipped with two swim platforms extending 36 inches aft, 21 inches wide, and positioned 12 inches above the waterline. These platforms, finished with soft matting on the test boat, include a three-step reboarding ladder that stows neatly under the starboard grab rail. The engine can be tilted up to 81 degrees to fully clear the water when not in use. The hull and deck feature a two-tone color scheme with Glastron's signature reverse sphere graphics.

Cockpit and Interior Living Spaces

The cockpit of the GTS 180 is spacious for its size, with a beam of 7 feet 5 inches primarily dedicated to a wide aft bench seat measuring nearly 6 feet in length. The cockpit depth of 30 inches provides a secure environment, especially for younger passengers. Upholstery on the test boat was in red and white vinyl, with additional color options including red and black, orange and black, and vivid green and black. Practical features include grab rails, speakers, and storage compartments integrated into the gunnels on both sides. An optional water sports towing arch equipped with bimini top hardware was installed on the test model. Forward seating consists of adjustable bucket seats with flip-up bolsters for both driver and companion. The helm console includes a lockable glove box housing a Bluetooth-enabled stereo system with two speakers, alongside a 12-volt power outlet and MP3 port. The helm design draws inspiration from classic roadsters, featuring upholstered contoured eyebrows shading analog gauges with self-draining bezels. Push-pull accessory switches flank the tilt steering wheel, reminiscent of vintage Glastron styling. Shift and throttle controls utilize a modern drive-by-wire system mounted on the gunnel, allowing precise speed adjustments via Evinrude's IST unit. Between the bucket seats, a hinged hatch provides access to a ski and board locker with ventilation slots and drainage.

Bow Area and Storage

Access to the bow is facilitated by a 16-inch wide center section of the windshield that folds open. The windshield itself is constructed with an aluminum frame supported by four stainless steel braces. The bow features padded gunnels, grab rails, and two cup holders for passenger convenience. With a cockpit depth of 28 inches in the bow area, seating cushions are removable rather than hinged, allowing access to carpeted storage lockers beneath. This design choice optimizes storage space and ease of maintenance on a boat of this size.

Trailer and Overall Assessment

The GTS 180 is delivered as a turnkey package that includes a custom-matched single-axle trailer, facilitating easy transport and launching. Equipped with the Evinrude E-Tech G2 150HO engine, the Glastron GTS 180 offers performance that aligns well with its sporty styling. Its interior layout and functional stern design make it a practical platform for water sports activities and enjoyable day trips on the water.
