Glastron 22: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Glastron GTS 225 is the brand's premium model in the 22-foot size range, distinguished by bold graphics and upgraded creature comforts. Positioned as an affordable option, this boat stands out for its stylish design, dynamic performance, and excellent handling characteristics. It is tailored for family water sports and features a classic sports car aesthetic. The GTS 225 accommodates up to 11 people or 1,800 pounds according to U.S. Coast Guard capacity ratings, measuring 22 feet in length with an 8-foot 4-inch beam and a dry weight of 3,380 pounds. Engine options range from 220 to 300 horsepower.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The GTS 225 features signature Glastron reverse spear graphics on its sides, customizable in two-tone combinations of jet black, laser red, or phantom gray. Below the waterline, running streaks begin well aft of the bow, complemented by a wide reverse chine that effectively deflects spray, enhances stability, and aids in quick planing. The hull’s 20-degree deadrise at the transom balances smooth handling with the ability to soften lake chop at higher speeds. The bow cockpit offers reclined seating for two forward-facing passengers and a wide cushion that can seat three to four upright, all surrounded by a two-tone bolster for comfort during travel or entertaining. Optional features include a table for dining or cocktails and a filler cushion that converts the bow area into a large sun pad. Recessed cup holders and stereo speakers are integrated into the bulwarks, while carpeted storage compartments reside beneath lift-out seat cushions. Notably, the boat includes a dedicated in-deck bow anchor locker and a fiberglass-sliding in-deck ski locker that drains into the bilge, features often absent in comparable models.

Helm and Cockpit Features

The cockpit offers 16 inches of clearance between the consoles and low-rise windshields. The helm station features a roadster-inspired dash with large, clear analog gauges including a central speedometer and tachometer, flanked by smaller bezels displaying engine temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, voltage, and trim status. Pulse switches on either side of the power-assisted tilt steering wheel control accessories. Storage solutions include a small pouch beneath the outboard console for devices such as smartphones or GPS units, a glove box with stereo controls in front of the companion seat, and a side console cubby. An optional adjustable water sports tower mounts at the windshield edges, extending from 5 feet when lowered to 6 feet at full height, secured by thumb screws. Both helm and companion bucket seats swivel and can be equipped with flip-up bolsters. The wrap-around U-shaped cockpit seating follows the boat’s color scheme and is complemented by a traditional 79-inch transom bench flanked by single seats, maximizing occupant capacity. Storage bins beneath the cockpit seating are spacious, with the transom bin suitable for a carry-on cooler. The 36-by-82-inch sun pad over the engine compartment can be propped to form a chaise lounge or aft-facing seat, with an adjacent port-side locker for additional storage.

Swim Platform and Additional Features

The integral swim deck measures 19 inches fore and aft and can be extended with an optional addition, as demonstrated on the test boat, providing extra space for water sports activities. The non-skid surface includes an embedded Glastron logo, and a three-step boarding ladder facilitates water access. The sun pad lifts easily on two heavy-duty struts, allowing access to the engine compartment for routine maintenance.

Power and Performance

The GTS 225 is available with either Volvo Penta or MerCruiser powertrains, ranging from 220 to 300 horsepower. The test boat was equipped with a 6.2-liter MerCruiser engine producing 300 horsepower, paired with a Bravo 3 lower unit. With a half fuel load and three crew aboard, the estimated test weight was 4,145 pounds. Performance testing recorded a top speed of 52 miles per hour at 5,410 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was 26.6 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM, consuming 6.65 gallons of fuel per hour, which translates to a range of approximately 144 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat demonstrated a rapid time to plane of 3.6 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 6.7 seconds. Handling characteristics were particularly notable for minimal bow rise during acceleration, smooth and controlled turns with slight lean, and stable tracking without chine walking or spray on deck.

Trailer and Overall Assessment

The GTS 225 package includes a standard color-matched tandem axle trailer, enhancing transport convenience. Overall, the Glastron GTS 225 is regarded as an excellent sport boat that delivers style, comfort, and performance at an accessible price point, making it well suited for family water sports and recreational boating.
