    Glastron 187: BoatTEST Review

    Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

    Overview

The Glastron GTS 187 Jet is a compact and stylish jet boat designed for both performance and versatility. Featuring a 250 horsepower Rotax Fortex supercharged intercooled engine as the top power option, this model offers an engaging driving experience while accommodating up to eight passengers. Its design balances sporty aesthetics with practical features, making it suitable for water sports and recreational boating.

    Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The boat's hull incorporates a single strake on each side and a flat chine extending well forward, complemented by a 20-degree dead rise at the transom. The jet drive nozzle is housed within a wider bucket than typically seen on jet boats, enhancing turning responsiveness, especially at low speeds. The bow features compact cushion seating for two, optimizing cockpit space, while the cockpit itself includes a full-width bench seat and swiveling captain and observer seats with flip-up bolsters. Storage is integrated beneath the bench, with a carpeted step accessible by removing the center cushion for easy movement to the swim platform. This platform offers stadium-style seating with a non-skid surface and ample room for water sports preparation. A tower supports a Bimini top for shade and includes an elevated tow point with a light, adding to the boat's functionality and style.

    Interior and Helm Features

The helm area embraces a roadster styling theme with a tilt steering wheel that offers a quarter turn from lock to lock, contributing to a sporty feel. The control panel features pull switches reminiscent of classic boats, maintaining the retro aesthetic. Gauges are housed in half canisters, with multifunction displays reducing clutter; the left cluster shows speed, fuel, and battery, while the right includes tachometer and digital engine readouts. A small storage area is present but could benefit from a deeper recess to better secure items. The engine control lever includes a thumb release that was found to be somewhat stiff. The helm seat is a bucket style that swivels and slides, equipped with a flip-up bolster for added comfort. The console is finished with well-executed gel work and a vinyl brow in contrasting color, though reflections from the gauge canisters are visible in the windshield. Engine access is provided via a flush-mounted turn and lock latch in the center walkthrough, requiring a firm pull due to the absence of lift assist struts.

    Power and Performance

Powered by a 250 horsepower Rotax Fortex supercharged intercooled engine driving a 161 millimeter impeller, the GTS 187 Jet delivers impressive acceleration and top speed. It planes in under two seconds, reaches 20 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 6.3 seconds. The top speed recorded was 46.2 miles per hour at 8,250 RPM, with a fuel consumption of 18.8 gallons per hour, resulting in an endurance of approximately 1.3 hours at full throttle. The most efficient cruising speed was found at 5,000 RPM, achieving 20.7 miles per hour with a fuel burn of 4.5 gallons per hour, allowing for nearly five and a half hours of operation. Handling characteristics include a learning curve due to reversed steering when backing down, but once mastered, the boat is highly responsive and fun to drive. The quarter-turn steering lock makes it easy to oversteer, causing the boat to bank up to 11 degrees in turns and enabling quick spins and water spray, all while maintaining a safe and stable ride.

    Dimensions and Weight

The Glastron GTS 187 measures 19 feet 6 inches in length overall, with a beam of 7 feet 5 inches and a draft of 14 inches. The empty weight is approximately 2,300 pounds. During testing with half fuel and two people aboard, the estimated operational weight was just over 2,800 pounds.

    Conclusion

The Glastron GTS 187 Jet offers a compelling blend of sporty performance, distinctive styling, and practical features. Its jet propulsion system provides quick acceleration and agile handling reminiscent of a personal watercraft but with greater versatility, including legal towing capability in all states and seating for up to eight passengers. The boat's design thoughtfully incorporates comfort and utility, from the helm layout to the swim platform and tower. Overall, the GTS 187 is an exciting and enjoyable boat that stands out for both its performance and eye appeal.
