Why live in a cave?  Man moved to above-ground housing centuries ago.  Most sailboat interiors are dark holes, accessed by steep ladders, and lacking outside views.  NOT LORIEN.  The raised saloon layout is amazing!

One enters the saloon through a vertical companionway door that slides into a cassette/well.  A hinged-top hatch(held open by gas struts) ensures full headroom.  It’s two very easy steps from the cockpit, over an 8” threshold into the salon.  Large fixed and opening windows provide 360 degree views while standing in the galley or seated in the raised dinette.

Once below the highly functional and quality joinery is immediately apparent.  Renowned atelier/carpenter Andre Rameau’ crafted the interior using steamed American cherry.  The overhead is faux tounge-groove white paneling.  Hatch and port trim rings are varnished cherry.  Green Alcantara snap on blinds are fitted at hatches and ports.   Countertops and open shelves have fiddled edges.  Locker and cabinet doors are fitted with flush horizontal louvers.  Locker doors latch positively with pop-out pushbuttons.   There are no sharp corners; all are rounded for safety.  The cabin sole is teak and holy marine plywood and pin/rotating latches secure access panels at sea.  Overhead recessed spot lights are wall-switched, dimmable LED.  Reading and task lights are all LED and well located.   Storage is voluminous in lockers, under cabin sole, under settees and below berths.

Starting forward is a guest cabin with V-berth.  Headroom measures 6’ 3”.  The bunks measure 6’-6” long by 28” wide and are fitted with lee cloths.  Top opening bins are below the bunks.  Hull sides are finished with white tongue/groove paneling.  The forward and aft bulkheads are watertight with access to this stateroom through a watertight door.  The aluminum watertight door has a window, shade, and two handle dogs.  A tall locker with shelves is aft to port.

A passageway leads from the guest cabin to the saloon.  Two overhead spotlights illuminate this corridor.  The electrical switch/breaker panels and battery isolation switches are concealed behind closed doors in this passageway.

To starboard of the passageway is the master stateroom.  Entrance is through a locking privacy door.   Headroom measures 6’ 3”.  Aft is a berth measuring 6’ 6” long by 50” forward and 60”.  Either partner can access the berth without climbing over the other.  A 6” sprung mattress is topped by 3” memory foam ensuring a great night’s sleep.  A dividing lee board and storage bins are beneath the bunk aft.  A drawer is forward.  A locker with shelves and a small, hinged salon access panel are in the aft bulkhead.  A chartlocker is above the bunk, aft. Two open shelves for books, glasses, etc are aft on each side. A 38” long by 7” wide open bookshelf runs below the deck edge forward.  A 26” wide by 15” long dressing seat is outboard, forward of the bunk.  A tall, 18” long locker with shelves is forward.

The head compartment is to port of the passageway.  Headroom measures 6’ 1”.  A hinged privacy door with stained glass window closes this space.   The electric flush head is forward.   A blue 17” x 11” oval blue china sink is set into a Corian counter and vanity cabinet aft.  A narrow teak seat outboard, Grohe rainshower spray head (recessed into overhead), Grohe mixer valve, shower curtain, teak grate, and drain pump are fitted for showring in this compartment.  Storage for toiletries and medicine is found in cabinet with mirror on the aft bulkhead, locker in the forward bulkhead, under the sink, and outboard/above the sink counter.

The raised saloon is up two easy steps from the passageway and lower level.  Headroom measures 6’ 6”.  Prominent in this space is the dinette, which is on a 12” high raised platform to starboard.   The “L”-shaped settee measures an amazing 9’ long by 28” with 24” wide seats.  “Café” leather upholstered seat and back cushions were redone in Ecuador in 2019.  A lee cloth is fitted for off watch/on call sleeping underway.  The fixed table measures 21” wide by 55” long and has an 18” wide flip up leaf to starboard.  A movable fiddle with pins helps the crew eat, not wear meals underway.   Two drawers for silverware and galley utensils are in the table pedestal.  A green/wood pedestal-mounted chair is forward at the chart table.  With excellent all-around views, one can stand watch seated in this chair.  Bin storage is below the dinette and outboard of the seatbacks, below the deck edge.

The galley is along the port side of the raised salon.  The cook and dishwasher will both appreciate the views, proximity to cockpit and dinette, and ample storage space and work surfaces in the galley.  The countertop is light blue Corian with black flecks and measures 24” wide by 79” long.  Outboard of the counter, below the deck edge, sliding doors access storage for dishes, food, cooking supplies, and small appliances.  Special, fitted racks hold cups, plates, and bowls.  A cabinet below the countertop has sliding wire bins for provisions.  Additional storage bins are below the raised dinette platform.  A stainless-steel handrail runs the length of the galley along the countertop as a handhold and stove crash bar.

A Yanmar 100hp diesel engine replaced the original Lombardini engine in 2022 and is located under the cockpit sole.  A small hatch from the starboard cockpit locker allows fluid checks without removing the sole. With the two large overhead hatches removed, access is excellent to all sides of the engine.

Most auxiliary equipment is located below the raised salon sole.  One can climb into this space for good access to pumps, watermaker, batteries, and other systems.

LORIEN’s hull sides were originally painted with matte gray Awlcraft paint.  As part of a 2022 refit, they were media blasted to bare aluminum.  The bottom is antifouled with black Micron CF paint raised well above the waterline.  The bottom was stripped to bare aluminum and built up with six new coats of epoxy before antifouling in 2022.  When drying out, an angled skeg aft of the centerboard trunk tilts the hull forward, balancing on a section of flat plating below the mast.  A retractable bow thruster is fitted forward.  A 2” by 2” box section raised bulwark is fabricated at the hull/deck edge and provides secure footing around the deck.     Handrails, chainplates, cleats, and padeyes are welded to the hull for the utmost strength and watertight integrity.   Hatches, blocks, and stoppers are bolted into the deck on raised platforms.  Mooring cleats are located at the deck edge to eliminate the need for chocks.

Keeping crew aboard when sailing is a priority on any cruising boat.  Deck security is superb with 30” high aluminum stanchions set into sockets in the raised bulwark.  Dyneema double lifelines run between stanchions, a welded aluminum bow pulpit, midship’s boarding gates, and the stern.   A teak “dolphin watching” seat is forward in the bow pulpit.  A high intensity LED “headlight” to illuminate forward is below this seat.   Light grey Treadmaster traction pads are adhered around the deck for non-skid.  The stern pushpit is welded aluminum pipe with seats located outboard of the stern arch on each side.  Welded aluminum pipe grab rails are fitted on either side of the cabin top.

Any yacht designed and built for long distance cruising should have ample storage accessed from deck and also inside.  On deck storage is found in several lockers.  The overboard draining bow locker is accessed through two hinged, guttered and gasketed hatches just aft of the anchor windlass.  The chain locker is all the way forward and storage for fenders, lines, buckets and other deck gear is right below the openings.  A watertight deck hatch further accesses the retractable bow thruster.   Huge lockers are located below the port and starboard cockpit seats.  In fact, the entire area below the cockpit is dedicated to storage and machinery.  If needed a bench in the port locker can be used as a berth.  The starboard cockpit locker has an aluminum workbench and vice.  A large propane locker is below the aft port seat and another locker for fishing and cleaning gear is beneath the starboard aft seat.

LORIEN has one of the best scoop sterns found on any cruising boat.  The swim platform measures 7’ wide by 4’ long; large enough to offload and rinse dive gear, clean fish or comfortably shower after swimming.  A 25” wide hinged door closes the walk-through transom to the cockpit.  The welded aluminum arch and dingy davit stow the AB RIB high enough to access the water for swimming, without lowering the tender.  A gasketed and guttered locker below the swim step measures 24” wide by 33” long and is deep enough for storing stern anchor and rode or other gear.   The swim platform is overlayed with Permateek Platinum color with black caulking synthetic decking.  A fold-down, center-post, stainless steel dive ladder is on centerline.  Hot/cold freshwater shower, salt and fresh water washdown hose connections allow cleaning or showering.

A welded stern arch is another sensible design detail.  LORIEN’s welded aluminum arch is common to the Garcia Passoa design. Two large solar panels are hinge-mounted mounted atop the arch and can be trimmed towards the sun.  A stub mast is to starboard with Iridum, GPS, and wifi antenna mounting.  An LED floodlight to illuminate the aft deck and cockpit was recently added.  A large, hinged bow aft of the arch serves as a dinghy davit swinging the dinghy clear of the transom when lowered.

LORIEN’s huge cockpit is well configured for sailing and lounging.   The cockpit seats measure 9’ long by 20” wide.  Permateek Platinum color with black caulking synthetic decking covers the seats and sole.   The helm is all the way forward and slightly to starboard.  A pedestal chair allows seated views over the cabin top.  An Iverson’s cockpit dodger and bimini provide shade and shelter from the elements.  Two additional solar panels are mounted atop the bimini aft.  The coamings measure 22” wide; ample for sitting or stepping on.  Storage cuddies are inside the coaming; great locations for winch handles, sailing gloves, line tails and other “quick to grasp” items.  The varnished, dropleaf cockpit table is on centerline.  Two gasketed and guttered hatches lift to access the engine.

LORIEN’s sailplan and sailing hardware are optimized for performance, reliability, and ease of handling.   Two headsails (jib and genoa) are Solent rigged and large Schaefer furlers.  A Liesurefurl in-boom mainsail furling system allows analog reefing from the cockpit and eliminates dealing with a mainsail cover or lazy bag.   Harken blocks and Spinlock and Antal stoppers manage sheets, halyards, and other lines.   All running rigging is high quality, low-stretch Dyneema or Spectra.  Winches are Anderson self-tailing.  The Liesurefurl in-boom furling mainsail utilizes an electric Anderson winch for the mainsail halyard and furling line.  Other lines can be led to this electrical winch.  Primary winches are huge Anderson ST68’s.  The genoa and jib furling lines led aft to the cockpit through Schaefer stanchion blocks.
