Dessert First is a beautiful example of the classic Gary Hoyt/ Halsey Herreshoff designed Cat Ketch.   Her traditional lines, comfortable layout, simple but powerful carbon fiber rig and exceptional sailing characteristics make her a vessel that any discriminating yachtsman would be proud to own.  She was built by the master craftsman at Tillotson/Pearson in Road Island and was the personal boat of Margaux Hemingway in the 1990's.

Her centerboard design allows access to shallow anchorages with her 4'5" draft.  When the wind picks up, lower her board to 7'6" and you've got a stable cruiser that can point high into the wind and handle rough conditions with ease.  I sailed alongside her for a photo session in 20-26 kts of breeze.  She points and sails beautifully to windward.  On a run or a reach, she is even more impressive and left my cutter in her wake.

Her current owner of the past 23 years has taken excellent care of her.  Over the past three months, she had had a $25k major refit.  Come take a look, and fall in love with this classic beauty.

Pros

Innovative Design: The Freedom 40 features a cat ketch rig, which offers versatility in sail configurations and enhances performance in various wind conditions. This setup allows for easier handling and balanced sailing.

Stability: The wide beam provides excellent stability, making it comfortable for cruising. This stability is especially beneficial for inexperienced sailors and during rough weather.

Ease of Handling: The Freedom 40 is designed for short-handed sailing. Its sail plan and setup allow for easy adjustment of sails from the cockpit, making it user-friendly for solo sailors or small crews.

Quality Construction: Known for its solid fiberglass hull and well-crafted interior, the Freedom 40 exhibits durability and a long lifespan. Many boats from this era have been well-maintained and continue to perform admirably.

Comfortable Interior: The layout typically features spacious living quarters, with ample headroom and a well-appointed galley. The use of natural light through large windows enhances the interior ambiance.

Long-distance Cruising Capability: Designed for ocean passages, the Freedom 40 has adequate fuel and water capacity, making it a reliable choice for long voyages.

Cons

Performance Under Certain Conditions: While the cat ketch rig provides versatility, some sailors may find it slower compared to more traditional sloop rigs, especially in lighter winds.

Maintenance: Older boats often require more upkeep, and potential buyers should be prepared for possible repairs or updates, particularly in areas such as rigging, electronics, and systems.

Weight Distribution: Some sailors may find that the cockpit layout and weight distribution can affect performance in very windy conditions, requiring careful attention to sail trim.

Limited Availability: Due to its age and niche design, finding specific parts or components may be more challenging compared to more mainstream sailing vessels.

Aesthetic Preferences: The unique design of the Freedom 40 may not appeal to everyone. Some sailors prefer the traditional aesthetic of a sloop or other rig types.
