Four Winns Horizon 350: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The 4Winds Horizon 350 OB is a newly introduced outboard-powered variant of a large bow rider that was previously available only with stern drives. This model features significant updates and adaptations to accommodate twin outboard engines, enhancing both performance and onboard space. We conducted a comprehensive inspection and performance evaluation to understand the differences from the stern drive version and to assess the boat’s capabilities.

Exterior Design and Swim Platform

A defining characteristic of the Horizon 350 OB is its twin 350 horsepower Mercury supercharged Verado outboard engines. These inline six-cylinder engines are more compact than V8s, allowing for a swim platform that acts as a large mounting bracket, improving overall performance. The boat’s dry weight is 13,300 pounds, necessitating substantial power. The swim platform is designed with water sports in mind, featuring side platforms to port and starboard that measure 3 feet 5 inches fore and aft, providing nearly seven feet of water access space. The entire swim platform spans 9 feet 8 inches in width, including a nearly two-foot-wide walkway in front of the outboards. A reboarding ladder is conveniently located on the starboard side. The outboard configuration frees up significant interior space beneath the aft settee, which lifts via a powered ram to reveal a large storage locker measuring 6 feet 5.5 inches wide by 3 feet 10 inches fore and aft and over a foot deep.

Seating and Entertainment Areas

The Horizon 350 OB offers seating for 11 adults facing forward, a notable feature in this class. The aft cockpit includes a bench seat for three, while two seats behind the helm and twin companion seats to port face forward but can swivel to engage with the cockpit social area. The helm companion seat also swivels, providing at least nine seats facing each other in the aft cockpit. Forward in the bow, a double-wide seat with an outboard chaise and substantial backrests around the bulwarks accommodate additional passengers comfortably. The starboard side of the cockpit is dedicated to an alfresco galley featuring a large sink, a top-loading storage compartment with bottle holders, a Kenyan electric grill, and an Isotherm refrigerator with pullout drawers, all set into a solid surface countertop. Towel bars double as handholds, and side-mount tables can be installed in both the aft cockpit and the forward port bow area, which converts into a dining booth. The deck is finished with a woven mat, although the cockpit scuppers’ grates could be less restrictive.

Interior Living Spaces

Access to the cabin is gained by sliding the port side console hatch outboard, revealing a companionway descending a few steps. The cabin offers six feet of headroom and includes a small galley counter with shore power controls above, side windows for natural light, and a standard microwave. Below the counter, a flat-screen TV and Fusion stereo controls face the lounge seats to starboard. Forward lies a wet head with a solid surface countertop, sink with pullout shower, a locker with a wastebasket, a vacuum flush toilet, and an electric vent fan. Headroom in the head varies between five feet six inches and five feet nine inches. Beyond the companionway, the interior expands to a 77-inch-long L-shaped settee that can convert into a berth measuring 46 inches by 77 inches with a filler cushion. This berth adjoins a mid-berth under the bridge deck, which measures 78 inches by 39.5 inches with 27 inches of clearance above. The cabin is well-ventilated and illuminated by opening windows and a skylight, with ample shelving and overhead lockers for storage.

Power and Performance

The Horizon 350 OB measures 35 feet in length overall with a beam of 10 feet 10 inches. Our test boat’s estimated weight, including 83% fuel and two people aboard, was 14,728 pounds. Powered by twin 350 horsepower supercharged Mercury Verado outboards, the boat achieved a top speed of 46.6 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. The most economical cruise speed was 34.7 miles per hour at 5,000 RPM, where fuel consumption was 30.3 gallons per hour, yielding 1.1 miles per gallon and a range of 176 statute miles. Acceleration was strong, reaching planing speed in 6.9 seconds, 20 miles per hour in 10.9 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 15.4 seconds. The outboard engines, mounted on the swim platform bracket, provide enhanced leverage relative to the boat’s center of gravity. Handling during hard turns at speed resulted in a lean of 17 to 18 degrees, maintaining passenger comfort. Engine trim adjustments helped keep the bow down during high-speed runs, and the 19-degree dead rise hull contributed to a smooth ride across various speeds.

Helm and Controls

The helm station features ergonomic design with dual 9-inch Simrad NSS Evo 3 multifunction displays positioned just below the operator’s line of sight. A dark-colored instrument console brow minimizes windshield glare. Toggle switches are conveniently located and illuminate when active. The VHF microphone is placed to starboard of the wheel, and an optional air conditioning vent directs airflow toward the operator. Controls for the Mercury joystick, Lenco trim tabs, Mercury digital binnacle, and the four-way powered captain’s seat are all within easy reach. The helm seats are mounted on solid fiberglass supports, well-padded, contoured, and upholstered with stitched detailing. Their bolsters provide comfortable support for leaning or sitting. The windshield is compound curved with a stainless steel header, enhancing aesthetics and protection. The breaker panel is located beneath the dash, a common but less accessible placement.

Additional Features and Equipment

The Horizon 350 OB is equipped with a robust standard hardtop featuring a manual sunroof and an optional powered Shoreshade awning measuring 6 feet 3 inches by 6 feet 10 inches. LED overhead lighting and a remote-controlled spotlight mounted above the helm enhance visibility. The five-foot-wide aft lounge seat faces the swim platform and includes grab rails, cup holders, and a Fusion stereo remote. Its power-operated backrest converts into a chaise lounge and can fold to provide leg support. Beneath the cockpit sole, a large locker stores multiple 36-quart ice chests secured with bungees. This locker also conceals C-strainers, through-hole fittings for the optional Dometic air conditioning system, engine and house batteries, and an optional Westerbeke generator. The transom walkway doubles as a hatch for easy inspection of critical equipment, including a welded aluminum fuel tank, bronze raw water cooling fittings, a diaphragm pump for air conditioning cooling water, and a fixed-mount fire suppression system. A hot water heater is located nearby. Shore power and TV hookups are discreetly housed under stainless steel caps. Additional conveniences include a hot and cold shower wand behind a stainless cover at the stern and a powder-coated steel step with teak treads that folds out for dock access. The foredeck features a wide-opening gas-assisted hatch with a horizontally mounted quick windlass operable from both bow and helm, complemented by a coiled washdown hose and an anchor on a through-the-stem roller. The boat’s reverse transom, rounded stern quarters, stainless steel air vents, hull-side treatments, and compound-curved windshield contribute to an attractive and upscale exterior appearance.

Conclusion

The 4Winds Horizon 350 OB successfully integrates powerful twin outboard engines with a thoughtfully designed hull and spacious interior to deliver a versatile and comfortable bow rider. Its extensive seating capacity, well-appointed entertainment areas, and practical storage solutions make it suitable for family outings and water sports. Performance testing demonstrated strong acceleration, efficient cruising, and stable handling. The helm layout and additional features further enhance the boating experience, making the Horizon 350 OB a compelling option in its class.
