Four Winns 27: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The 4Winds HD270-OB is a versatile pontoon-style boat designed to combine high passenger capacity with premium finish quality and comprehensive standard amenities. Powered by a single Evinrude E-Tech G2 300 outboard engine, this model aims to deliver both spaciousness comparable to pontoon boats and the performance and handling characteristics expected of a sport boat in its class.

Power and Performance

Equipped with a 300 horsepower Evinrude E-Tech G2 outboard engine turning a 14.5 by 17-inch Rebel three-blade stainless steel propeller through a 1.85 to 1 gear reduction, the HD270-OB demonstrated a top speed of 48.9 miles per hour at 5,900 RPM during testing. The optimal cruising speed was recorded at 30.1 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, with a fuel consumption rate of 9.65 gallons per hour, providing an effective range of approximately 196 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, reaching 20 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 6.8 seconds. The boat exhibited a typical bow rise of 14 degrees under hard acceleration. Handling was notably agile, with the dynamic power steering system allowing adjustable steering input and the iTrim automatic trim system enhancing ease of operation. The boat maintained a steady line in hard turns without sliding or hopping, aided by a stern and motor bracket pad that improves lift and reduces wetted surface for enhanced speed and fuel efficiency.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The HD270-OB features a spacious swim platform measuring 7 feet 7 inches wide by 3 feet fore and aft, finished optionally with a soft mat that provides comfort underfoot and protects boards or skis from scratches. The design allows ample room forward of the outboard well for guest movement during water sports activities. The outboard well is notable for its internal hydraulic steering system, enabling the engine to tilt up to 81 degrees completely out of the water. A starboard hatch conceals an angled four-step boarding ladder with wide steps and a wet storage compartment. Additional exterior amenities include a freshwater shower wand, a remote stereo control, and an aft-facing stern seat with padded armrests and integrated cup holders. The outboard configuration frees up substantial storage beneath this seat, which is easily accessible via twin stainless steel gas struts. A 16-inch wide stainless steel gate provides access from the stern to the cockpit, with two batteries housed beneath the walkway.

Cockpit and Seating

The cockpit accommodates approximately six passengers behind the captain and companion bucket seats, which are among the best in their class, featuring high backrests, reclining capability, folding armrests, and supportive retaining cushions. The bolstered seats cantilever upward on tandem supports, enhancing comfort during high-speed maneuvers. The optional foldable wakeboard tower is equipped with twin JL Audio speakers and an integrated anchor light within the tow pylon. The cockpit seating includes storage compartments with self-draining fiberglass liners, including a cooler beneath a hinged starboard seat and additional storage beneath the port lounge cushion. The aft bench seat incorporates the battery switch in its base and includes a wastebasket in the corner. The helm area is equipped with fog-resistant Faria gauges, an Evinrude Icon 3.5 CS digital gauge, an optional Raymarine chart plotter, and a multi-function instrument. The helm console features a deep eyebrow and top-stitched upholstery, complemented by a stainless steel windshield header. The boat's stereo system includes four speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, and iPod and MP3 ports.

Bow Area and Additional Amenities

The bow area offers two forward-facing seats each measuring sixty inches in length, with a median width of sixty-five inches. Stainless steel grab rails, combing pads, gunnel cutouts with speakers and cup holders, and storage compartments beneath hinged bottom cushions enhance passenger comfort and convenience. The starboard backrest opens on a hinge to provide extra storage and access to helm wiring. The forward bottom cushion lifts to reveal a hatch covering an insulated, self-draining cooler and a four-step beach reboarding ladder with space for an anchor. Additional features include a freshwater shower on the port side and an optional fiberglass table that can be mounted in the stern, cockpit, or bow. The HD270-OB also comes standard with a tandem axle trailer.

Conclusion

The 4Winds HD270-OB successfully blends the spaciousness and passenger capacity typical of pontoon boats with the refined build quality, extensive amenities, and agile handling characteristic of sport boats in its class. Its powerful outboard engine, thoughtful design features, and comfortable accommodations make it a compelling option for boaters seeking versatility without compromising performance or comfort.
