Fountain TE: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

Fountain is widely recognized for its leadership in the performance power boat segment, known for efficient hull designs paired with powerful engine configurations that deliver exceptional speed. While the brand is often associated with race boats and poker run champions, Fountain actually sells more fishing boats than high-speed models. The 38 Tournament Edition (38TE) center console exemplifies this blend of performance and fishing functionality, offering a unique take on the Fountain legacy.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 38TE features a large four-deck fishing platform at the bow, situated above a cutty cabin. The bow deck includes a substantial anchor locker and pop-up mooring cleats, all secured by a robust stainless steel handrail. Wide, non-skid steps on both sides lead aft to the cockpit, ensuring safe and easy movement around the boat. The cockpit is designed for serious fishing, equipped with four fish boxes totaling nearly 800 quarts, padded bolsters along the gunnels, and rod holders both beneath the gunnels and in the deck. Hidden mooring cleats are strategically placed fore and aft, with hoss pipes routing lines outboard. Standard seawater washdown and an optional freshwater washdown system are conveniently located yet unobtrusive. The transom features a two-person seat with a 50-gallon livewell beneath the cushion, and the removable seat back includes integral rod holders. Additional amenities include a pressurized water sink on the port side and a walk-through transom door on the starboard side, though the latter is somewhat small, which may present challenges when handling large fish on the four-engine configuration.

Interior Living Spaces

Below the bow deck lies the cutty cabin, which serves primarily as a practical crew space rather than a liveaboard accommodation. The cabin is outfitted with basic amenities including air conditioning, heating, and shore power connections. Storage is ample beneath the bunks, providing space for up to eight fishing rods, safety gear, and other essentials. The cabin offers a comfortable spot for crew members to rest during transit to fishing grounds.

Helm and Electronics

The helm is centered around a rugged leaning post with electrically activated seat pads, providing comfort and functionality for the operator. Rod storage is plentiful both on the leaning post and the T-top above. The console layout is thoughtfully designed for high-speed operation, with all controls and instruments within easy reach and clear visibility. Mercury SmartCraft digital displays are prominently positioned alongside Lavorsi analog gauges, while trim and tab indicators remain in the operator’s line of sight. A well-organized row of switches controls pumps, lights, and accessories. Electronics are housed in a recessed compartment with clear lids, and additional storage for charts, sunglasses, and safety gear is integrated into the console and overhead areas.

Power and Performance

The Fountain 38TE measures 37 feet 11 inches in length with a beam of 10 feet 6 inches and a dry weight of 10,600 pounds. It features a 22-degree dead rise hull with a super-ventilated positive lift design, a notched transom, and a pad keel, all contributing to its performance capabilities. The boat is factory-rigged with a choice of eight Mercury Racing engine packages, ranging from 750 to 1,200 horsepower. The test boat was equipped with quad Mercury 300 Optimax XS motors, a configuration that holds the world center console speed record of 87.6 miles per hour. During testing on Long Island Sound, the 38TE demonstrated impressive acceleration, reaching plane in six seconds and hitting 30 miles per hour in just three seconds. The maximum speed recorded was 84.7 miles per hour under less-than-ideal conditions. Optimal cruising speed was 54.5 miles per hour, delivering a range of approximately 515 miles with the optional 420-gallon fuel capacity, consuming 40 gallons per hour at cruise. The boat handled exceptionally well, providing a comfortable and stable ride even at high speeds.

Conclusion

The Fountain 38 Tournament Edition center console successfully combines the brand’s hallmark speed and performance with practical fishing features and durable construction. Its thoughtful design accommodates serious anglers without sacrificing the exhilarating ride Fountain is known for. With a variety of powerful engine options and a well-executed layout, the 38TE is a compelling choice for those seeking a versatile, high-performance fishing boat.
