Fountain 39: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Fountain 39NX is a versatile luxury sport boat designed to excel in a variety of settings, from elegant outings to offshore fishing excursions. It combines high-end finishes with practical features, making it suitable for entertaining guests or tackling challenging waters. This review by Captain Steve of BowTest.com provides a detailed inspection of the boat's features and an evaluation of its performance.
Exterior Design and Deck Features
The aft deck of the Fountain 39NX features opposing seating with a 56-inch forward seat and a 73-inch aft seat separated by 28 inches, both offering ample storage underneath. The decking throughout the boat is C-deck, known for durability and comfort. Upholstery is multi-toned with custom embroidery and double French stitching, incorporating different foam densities for enhanced comfort. The piping is recessed to avoid discomfort when seated. On the starboard side, a side boarding gate opens inward revealing a sturdy ladder with two grab handles, designed to support heavy loads such as dive tanks. Padded bolsters surround the cockpit, ranging from 15 to 24 inches in height, enhancing comfort and safety. Dual gates on either side of the aft seat provide access to the swim platform, which is nearly level with the dock for easy boarding. The cockpit deck drains are notably large and positioned above the trim tabs to create a venturi effect, efficiently removing water from the cockpit. The transom houses a 30 amp shore power connection, city water inlet, freshwater shower, and freshwater flush systems for all three engines. While the quarter cleats are somewhat difficult to access, the cap rails measure nine inches, though a midship cleat would be a welcomed addition. A centrally located hatch in the cockpit leads to a mechanical room housing macerator pumps, bilge pumps, and fuel filters, all neatly organized with double-clamped hoses and clearly marked valves. The hatch is well-finished with gas strut support and a secure locking mechanism.
Hardtop and Helm Station
The hardtop is supported by powder-coated, heat-repellent integrated supports that preserve side deck space. It features LED spreader lights, JL Audio speakers with customizable lighting, courtesy lights, and a crank-operated nav light. Beneath the hardtop, the deck includes macerated fish lockers with drawers and tackle storage on both sides of the console. The helm console is elevated but includes a three-inch platform to improve visibility. The dashboard is soft-touch with curved tempered glass free of distortion, dual 16-inch Garmin or Simrad displays, a JL Audio stereo, and carbon fiber panels for switches and controls. The compass is positioned off-center, and the helm would benefit from a windshield wiper and washer. Beverage holders with drainage prevent condensation buildup, and the double-wide seats feature individual bolsters, flip-up armrests, and dual footrests for ergonomic comfort. Battery compartments are conveniently located beneath the seats.
Bow and Forward Seating
The bow area offers a contoured lounge with separate headrests and flip armrests, surrounded by bolsters and recessed grab rails for safety. Storage is available beneath the seats and in the deck, which also houses a pedestal table base. Two pull-up cleats and a turn-and-lock latch secure the area, though a lift-and-lock latch would improve usability. The anchor system includes a stainless steel roller, a cleat for securing the anchor rode, and easy access to both sides of the rope. A fresh water washdown bin is conveniently located to the starboard side of the console.
Interior Living Spaces
Accessed via a sliding pocket door on the starboard side of the console, the cabin offers generous headroom of 7 feet 3 inches, tapering to 24 inches over the berth, which measures 73 by 53 inches. The cabin is equipped with USB charging ports on both sides and opening port lights for ventilation. A sink with an acrylic front and storage is located just aft of the berth, alongside a porcelain toilet and additional storage. The main electrical panel with battery switches is also housed within the cabin.
Power and Performance
The Fountain 39NX measures 39 feet in length overall, with a beam of 11 feet 3 inches and a draft of 28 inches. The boat's empty weight is 16,000 pounds, with a test weight of approximately 18,713 pounds including fuel, water, and two people. Powered by triple 450 horsepower Mercury Racing engines with 14.5 by 25 props, the boat achieved a top speed of 80.1 miles per hour at 6450 RPM. At a more economical 4000 RPM, it cruised at 44.4 miles per hour with a fuel burn of 48.6 gallons per hour, translating to 0.9 miles per gallon and a range of 383 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. The boat planes quickly, reaching planing speed in 5.6 seconds and accelerating through various speed benchmarks smoothly. The hydraulic trim tabs respond quickly, requiring measured adjustments to optimize running attitude. Engine trim adjustments provide subtle but effective performance enhancements. The 39NX handles turns naturally, though hard turns cause noticeable heeling. Prop ventilation is minimal during normal turns but may require trim adjustments during heavier maneuvers. In choppy conditions, the boat maintains composure, cutting through waves with minimal hull slap and no significant loss of speed.
Conclusion
The Fountain 39NX demonstrates a seamless blend of luxury, functionality, and high performance. Its refined fit and finish, thoughtful design features, and powerful triple-engine setup make it equally adept at entertaining guests dockside or pursuing offshore fishing adventures. The boat's responsive handling and impressive speed capabilities confirm its status as a true Fountain, delivering both comfort and exhilaration on the water.
